Don’t Believe Spring Scrimmage Spin

So one of the excuses Lincoln Riley has given about canceling the spring game is it causes him to eliminate a regular practice for the game and another practice to prepare for the scrimmage.

Here’s some things to consider: Riley usually has the team scrimmage during other parts of spring practice. How come those scrimmages are not a problem?

USC and other schools hold closed scrimmages throughout spring practice and then traditionally hold a public scrimmage at the end. So why is it suddenly a problem now?

Also, a lot of fans would be happy with a public practice at the Coliseum that had “some” scrimmaging. That would not really disrupt Riley’s precious plans. Clay Helton held a practice at the Coliseum when he didn’t want to scrimmage and it was open to the public.

And let’s remember this: Curt Cignetti, who is 10 times the coach Riley is, said he has never had more than 13 spring practices as a coach. And he is holding a spring game. But what does he know?

  1. Scott, since when did you become a Clay Helton fan. So, now you want LR to be like CH. That is insanity. Please make your points logically, or are you disappointed that CH is no longer the USC coach. I would assume that like the rest of USC fandom, you were excited to see CH let go and LR take his place. Are you now going to rewrite history? Wait for the product in the Fall until you critique the decisions that LR makes to prepare HIS team. I miss Dan Weber and his insightful analysis of USC football and college football in general. 1. Yes, Clay won a Rose Bowl [with Sam playing his heart out]. And one of his Notre Dame wins was over an injury riddled team that never had a chance against Adoree Jackson. But whatever. No one thinks we were better off with Clay than Lincoln.

      2. KAM: How about we are worse off with both of them?

DON: And Riley Coyote promised things would be better and we would be competing for national championships right away. That hasn’t happened. But no rah rahs will dare call him a liar.

    1. I thought Crips and Bloods don’t mix. I recall that Wendell Tyler, the great UCLA running back, used to flash the Crips gang hand signs. A real scholar athlete.

      1. KAM: And his son went to… USC.

DON: He was recruited by Pete Carroll. Marc Tyler became known not just for his football career but also for controversies during his time at USC.

        Key Scandals

Tyler had some legal troubles, including a DUI arrest in 2012, which further complicated his public image.

        Video Incident:

In 2011, a video surfaced showing Tyler making controversial comments about receiving benefits from boosters. This led to significant media scrutiny and discussions about the ethics of college athletics.

        Suspensions:

Following the video release, Tyler was suspended by Lane Kiffin for the first game of the 2011 season. The incident raised questions about the appropriateness of his remarks and the broader issues of college players receiving compensation.

      2. Well MG, I remember that Marc Tyler was drunk and being interviewed by TMZ when he suggested that “we all” get what Reggie Bush got including Kim K. Later, Kim’s brother who attended USC confronted some of the football players about the comment and the players threatened to kick his azz. He backed down quicker than cowardly Gabby, was publicly humiliated and soon thereafter went into a depression and gained 50 pounds.

      3. Ah! Thank you, Plow.

btw, I hope all the negativity shown toward Lincoln here evaporates if he beats Oregon and Ohio State at the Coliseum….and changes the hierarchy of college football……

#….that would deserve a little appreciation, yes?

      4. Yes MG. If LR can build a top tier team all will be forgiven, kind of. I still want mostly open practices and a Spring game. That is not too much to ask. I believe we will be good in 2026 but too young and inexperienced to be top tier. The schedule also hurts us. We will need to wait until 2027 to become a legitimate national championship contender.

      5. KAM: And what are the odds of that happening?

DON:The USC Trojans winning the 2026 College Football Playoff National Championship is at +3500, according to DraftKings Sportsbook. This means a $100 bet would win $3,500 if they succeed.

      6. Answer to So Cal’s very smart question: Enemies of the United States [as conceived by the drafters of the Constitution—you know, the guys who believed in Due Process and Freedom of Assembly and Religion] were running our country during the years you mentioned.

      7. As far as the National Championship, no —we won’t win it. The schedule won’t allow it. But….if we win all our home games it will mean a Big Change in the college football landscape is in the works….2027 will look better and better once Oregon and Ohio State go down on our home turf…. and Lincoln will look pretty good too.
