USC Buzz: It’s Selection Sunday (For One Team)

It’s Selection Sunday, otherwise known as a day off for Eric Musselman and his players.

But the women’s basketball team will wait to see where they get sent. Guard Jazzy Davidson, who gothurt in the Big Ten Tournament, is OK and able to play. Will USC be able to win two games in the tournament? One game might be a tough ask depending on the draw.

  • USC won 19 straight games to start the season. The only other USC baseball team to win 19 straight games was in 1955, which went to the College World Series.

That team featured several All-Americans: outfielder Gerry Mason, catcher John Garten and pitcher Vic Lapiner.

Another player who spent a short period on that team before signing a pro contract was pitcher Barry Latman, who was a member of the Chicago White Sox team that won the 1959 World Series and a member of the American League All-Star team in 1961.

Fairfax High School had three players in the 1959 World Series: Larry Sherry and Chuck Essegian (Dodgers) and Latman (White Sox).

      1. Native Americans played something similar to stick ball. But we stole that the way we stole their land and merely renamed it baseball.

  1. Three players from the same high school playing in the same world series. That has got to be some kind of record. Most high schools can go thirty years or more without a single player making the major leagues let alone 3 at the same time.

  2. Thank you RFK for correcting our esteemed professional journalist regarding the 1959 world series champions the Los Angeles Dodgers who won it in sixs games with Larry Sherry getting two wins and two saves as the closer and named MVP of the series. By the way his brother Norm Sherry was on that team as a backup catcher who is credited with helping his brother and Sandy Koufax were both coached by him to perfect their deliveries. Making the playoffs this year without Juju is a real tribute to the USC womens basketball team and their coach. If they go deep that would be fantastic, but just making it is an accomplishment that Muss would relish if his team had been motivated to play hard to the end of games. Fight on, Dan, Class of 1962

  3. Coach Andy is doing a great job as our baseball coach at SC, WITH VERY LITTLE SUPPORT. They never made excuses the last few years with no home baseball field, and quietly built a quality program with a good mix of freshman, and some transfers.

He was a competitor as a player, and it reflects in his leadership abilities and traits as a coach.

Probably the only the good hire USC had made in the last 10 years that should tell you about the quality of our athletic directors.

Meanwhile, it appears the MUSS BUS is still stalled so is our Athletic Director. I have to believe many of our so called basketball boosters want him out NOW after blowing so much money with 1 year players who were not productive, and now the program must do it all over again in year 3. Musselman, is a D- League coach who is use to putting teams together at the last minute after they are rejected by the NBA this is not the guy who knows how to build a basketball program with players who want to be at USC, and be part of a team not just for a year. I am sure Musselman calls NBA scouts every year for player recommendations on transfers this is not the way to build a good team in 2-3 years.

One thing I have noticed Musselman’s team never improve…. I notice across town that Mick Cronin can develop talent, and knows how to force his team to learn defense, fundamentals, and teamwork. USC looked poorly coached the last two years despite all the injuries. I think most people don’t like Cronin the guy, but at least he is a competitor, and his teams’ come ready to play with passion a true reflection of their coach. UCLA hired a real basketball coach USC did not.
