USC Thursday Buzz: Do Splash Hires Work?

If you’re wondering why Cal State L.A. is supposed to hire Michael Cooper as its men’s basketball coach despite Cooper’s spotty track record, remember the athletic director at Cal State L.A. is Daryl Gross, who for many years was Mike Garrett’s No. 2 at USC.

Garrett (and Gross) used to believe in trying to make a splash hire in basketball. Once they offered the USC men’s job to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Cooper was not a great fit at USC, so it will be interesting to see what happens at Cal State L.A.

  • Chris Capko, a long-time USC assistant under Andy Enfield, is expected to become the coach at Ball State.

,Speaking of Enfield, he had a quick handshake after losing in the NCAA Tournament last night.

  • Jack Basseer had a two-run homer to give USC a walk-off 4-3 victory over Cal State Bakersfield last night. The Trojans are 21-1 and 15-0 at Dedeaux Field.

DON: After what happened to the football and basketball teams with the easy early schedule I am afraid this is more Fools Gold.
