A Less-Than-Stellar Manning Camp Report

When I wrote this morning about Jayden Maiava’s inconsistency, which USC-media types seem to ignore, I didn’t even know there was a critical report of his performance at the recent Manning Passing Academy.

From CBS Sports: “(Maiava) left something to be desired from a pure arm-strength standpoint.

“Somewhat of a mechanical thrower, the ball doesn’t jump out of his hand — especially when surrounded by peers — and he can struggle to generate consistent velocity into the intermediate and deep parts of the field.”

    1. Mitch woulda been a Big Hero if that receiver didn’t drop a sure TD in the rain against Notre Dame…. the winning pass went right though his hands….

No doubt that’s a religious medal of some sort hanging from her neck, since she’s a “Follower of Jesus” and ends her messages with “you stupid idiot”.

    After all, isn’t that WJWD?

  2. Weren’t they saying the same thing about Arch Manning and now he is projected as the best college QB this year. Wait until you see him in a game. If he can’t show quality skills, we can always try the five star backup. Fight on, Dan, Class of 1962

    1. Both of the guys before Jayden suffered injuries —but I’m not blaming Riley or the O-line. Caleb came up lame cuz he was trying to outrun corners & safeties to the end zone in the Utah game, Miller was holding on to the ball 2 seconds too long in every game after that great Bowl Game he played for us …

Personally, I’m hoping Jayden only runs when he has to — we need his leadership.

      3. The censorship is not based just on “certain words” MG. It is based on the overall content of the blog and the identity of the blogger. How do I know this is the case? Because most of my posts are removed one hour after posting, or two hours, or a half an hour or even six hours. If there was a software program that removed them based on triggering words, it would immediately prevent the post from appearing. Or there would be consistency that matches a cycle – every 20 minutes or 30 minutes posts are reviewed by the program for triggering words and offensive posts removed accordingly. That is not the case. And the most recent removals are clearly content based. After I criticized Scott for removing my post but allowing Gabby’s to remain, he went back 20 minutes later and removed Gabby’s post. This means that Scott, not a software program based on triggering words, made the decision to remove Gabby’s post. I don’t like it. Why should I contribute content to a blog that censors my posts. At this point, I am going to team up with Real Gabby and wreak havoc on Scott and his stinkin blog. Or just ignore the blog and stop contributing posts.

  6. Scooter,

With the NIL and with the transfer portal, there have been so many players that have come and gone. There is no continuity and with that no loyality to the program from the players and the fans do not know who the players are or who the players are that have left.

      3. Longstreet is incredibly fast and likes to run. He also has tremendous arm strength. But, he is a bit small for the position. Don’t get the comparison to Leinart who was tall but lacked athleticism and arm strength.

  8. Who cares how Maiava looked at a football camp. He has been the starter for a year and a half and we have had the opportunity to observe him. His decision making has been questionable at times and his performance inconsistent. But, I like his arm strength and I think he improved from the first year to the second. I think he is a top tier college quarterback. He holds a pre-season ranking from Joel Klatt of No. 7 in the nation. But according to Scott and some others he is not very good. C’mon. He is much better prepared to lead the team than Husan Longstreet.

  11. Scott, you always seem to want to always be in a win win situation. If you disparage Maiava’s ability and he loses games, you can claim that you have superior football knowledge and you were right, and if he wins games, you can say that you really like USC. How about not making judgements about Maiava until after he has played against Oregon, Ohio State and Indiana? Until that time, how about rooting for your alma mater, win or lose. 1. Because it wouldn’t produce clicks Dan. I think Scott only believes about 75% of what he says on the blog. He is probably a true USC football fan, a real rah rah like most of us, but you wouldn’t know it by reading his stuff.

      1. Thanks Plow. I do respect Scott’s overall football knowledge and insights, as well as, his institutional knowledge that he usually shares on Fridays. Even though college players now seem like professionals, we still need to keep in mind that they are 18-22 year old college students. Critique the overall play of the team because that is on the coaches, but lets not critiize individual players regarding their abilities. Fight on, Dan, Class of 1962

      2. KAM: Or Scott has seen USC coaches come and go and promise the world and not deliver, like Tollner, Smith Hackett, Kiffin, Sark, Hugs and now Riley Coyote?

      3. Real Gabby: During the glory days of USC football under Pete Carrol, Scott was as critical of the head coach as any other coach that followed him. Who can forget the references to “Hail Cesar.” The personal attacks on Pete’s alleged relationships with coeds. The attacks on his assistant coach hiring decisions and allegations of favoritism and nepotism some legitimate and some not. He even mocked Pete’s decision to return to USC and teach a class in leadership. I can’t recall any stories that extolled Pete as a great defensive minded coach, a great identifier of young talent and tremendous recruiter, a great motivator of young men, ect., but there were countless stories that criticized him. If you can’t identify any positive stories about a coach that went 39-0 and won two national championships, and was a foot away from a third, a question arises as to the objectivity of the reporting. I like Scott and appreciate his blog but believe that his primary motivation is to be a provocateur and generate clicks. And I don’t criticize him for it. But I do not apologize for saying that I believe that Scott only believes about 75% of the stuff that he posts on his own blog. At heart, he is just as much a homer for USC football as Vin Scully was for the Dodgers.

    2. you don’t get it…the reason wolfman is the most respected SC beat writer in the business, is that he is not a rah-rah hack!! go to any SC nerd podcast, blog etc. a real fan does not rely on jibber-jabber that suits his fantasy view of his team!

wolfman is tough as nails, he ran Kiff outta town after Kiff tried to take him on, and that was AFTER making a public apology! Lil’ Lord Riley if ascared of the wolfman. like i have often said the best thing an SC coach could do is buy a soft serve machine, put a sign on it that says “for wolf only” and hold weekly meetings with him. to paraphrase Proximo from Gladiator: “win over wolf, and you’ll win the crowd!”
