USC Morning Buzz: Beware The Indifferent Leader

Was your heart broken by the USA last night at the World Cup?

It was about as uninspiring an effort as could be possible, especially given the environment in Seattle.

For me, a big problem is Christian Pulisic, who for some reason gets all the endorsement deals despite a demeanor that often comes across as aloof. He certainly did not act like it was the biggest game of his life last night. And then suffered an injury. Again.

Going forward, he cannot be the face of U.S. Soccer or the team leader. He’s too indifferent. It’s kinf of like making Lincoln Riley the face of the USC program.

Speaking of Riley . . .

  • For years, Lincoln Riley has blown off the Trojan Football Alumni Club golf tournament. But he had time to recently play in the Marcus Allen golf Tournament in Carlsbad and even brought Charmin Bowden with him. They like having Allen at USC for recruiting purposes so they don’t mind going to his tournament.

  1. Hard to find many positives in their performance yesterday. Their lackluster play reminded me of a Lincoln Riley coached team where there so many high expectations but couldn’t deliver.

    1. Especially that first Belgium goal, where three of our players just stood there watching the ball, only to have the Belgium player jump all over it & pass it off for his teammate to score!

      1. Really disappointing. This was a game where the leaders were supposed to show up and had their best performance but fell way short. The defensive errors they committed were embarrassing. Based on their play you wonder how they got that far.

      2. KAM: The goalie gave the game away when we were only down one goal when he left the goal unattended and kicked the ball to a Belgium player .

DON: He must be replaced for that level of incompetence.

  3. Pulisic reminds me of that ‘golden age’ of beach volleyball players with their ‘catchy’ names ‘Singin Smith, Karch Karay, Kent Steffes, Randy Stoklos’ sounded always like a clone of each other and ‘Ken meets Ken Meets Ken meets…’ they all (Pulisic et. al.) look like Manhattan Beach ‘beach bums’….sniffin’ around your girl friend or wife.

Soccer players (save the goalie) closely resemble one another in body: shape, mass and speed – good riddance but pleased so many outside the USA now understand how special our nation truly is for the rest of mankind.

Our near national indifference towards soccer contrast with out deep allegiance to: football baseball, hockey and basketball whereas it seems ‘football/soccer’ is the sole sport the rest of the world focuses on.
It confirms why the USA is so unique and it is evident when one looks at the shape and size of the athletes that play these sports rather than all one shape/size.

Was intriguing reading Riley playing at the Marcus Allen Gold Tournament.

I believe all of us here care little for who attended what event and I’d bet Riley treated the same when he coached at OK. I know many believe said attendance ensure a happy generous alumni but that isn’t him – if he wins that’s all that matters – nothing else.

There was a strategic attack by the powers that be to annihilate what Pete Carroll had resurrected and many forget a ‘legal’ rep from ‘the princess’ that was on that NCAA witch hunt.

I know many were livid at USC cancelling the last November game this Autumn against ‘the princess’ and all pointed the finger directly at Riley. So what? Cohen et. al. stood her/their ground and ‘the princess’ is back ‘hat in hand’ smarting from the fact that both TX and Mi have agreed to play them (one overlapping year) but only for 2 years in a row and only in September.

For me the key game is OR 26th Sept. – win that and the entire campaign will continue to build momentum deep into the playoffs.

  4. Yes, it was bad bad bad. Almost to the point of slapstick comedy, only it was not funny. The fundamentals were simply not followed. And worst of all, we played like we were intimidated. Definitely looking forward to not seeing Ream on the next team in 4 years. Hope Pulisic gets healthy and finds his moxie, because he was a non-factor. Tillman was the only bright spot.

  6. wolfman, you may not like this, but i, for one, am glad the USA got their asses kicked in. that sniveling FIFA Jerk who licks the Big Peedos’ boots is a disgrace to soccer. first he gives the Peeedo a “peace award” despite the fact he attacked two countries he thught he could walk over….until the Iranians whipped his ass with a few motorboats and some Radio Shack drones.

loved all the Belgians mocking the Peedo’s “jerk off dance” hilarious! too bad Team USA got mixed up in the Peedo’s attempt to rig the World Cup, they got a well deserved humiliation as a consequence! all credit to Belgians for getting pissed off and trashing USA for trying to cheat!! all Belgians enter free to Cadre Preferred Plus Night!!

      1. If he acts like a peedo, and talks like a peedo, and hangs around a notorious peedo for over a decade on a plane and island where documented criminal peedo activity took place, then what is he, a duck?? ya don’t need Inspector Detector to figure this one out.

      2. Funny, you folks didn’t say the same thing about a guy who showered with his own daughter and still sniffs little girls.

Always one set of rules for your people and another set for everyone else.

  7. Belgium and their players play top teams all the time in Europe, the USA plays Mexico, big difference . How many US players play in top European leagues ?

US looked like a deer in the headlights and Wolf is spot on about Pulisic, guy was invisible in the biggest game

    1. We’ll be pulling for Norway the rest of the way, just because we love their fans!

After that, it’s all about rooting AGAINST France! If Norway can’t win, ANYONE but France!

  8. KAM: –For the USA soccer fans the fall was breathtaking while the ferocious Belgium squad seemed to take the game in stride, “Hey mates, chalk another one up for us’

DON: All sports fans want to follow a winner and American soccer is not the way to bet

KAM: One European fan mocked American soccer– “When you learn how to defend the ‘cross, give me a call”

  9. DON: So which country are you now rooting for in the World Cup?

KAM: After the North American countries were eliminated I lost most interest, but Norway is a story and those Belgium boys have to be riding high about now
