Lincoln Riley Big Ten Media Day Highlights (Lowlights)

Lincoln Riley spoke at Big Ten media day and — big surprise — Notre Dame was a prime topic.

“Nothing’s changed from my vantage point. We want to play the game. I want to play the game. We would be playing the game had some things come true that were said. And so hopefully we get to that point.”

So Riley’s lips are moving but nothing’s happening. The earliest the rivalry will resume is 2030.

  • Riley said USC moved into the new football building 10 days ago.
  • On making the College Football Playoff: “I do believe we’re more equipped than at any point in the previous few years. That’s not a hope or a wish, there’s a lot of facts to back that up.”
  • On Gary Patterson: “You can’t put a price tag on this guy’s experience. I mean, there’s just not much that this guy hasn’t seen.”
  • On Jayden Maiava: “Of all the guys that I’ve been fortunate enough to coach, I don’t know that I’ve had anyone that has improved from day one to this point as much as Jayden has.”
  • On a 24-team College Football Playoff: “When you get a room of 50 coaches or whatever we have in this conference together, it’s hard to get everybody to be unanimous on something. This is something where our room has been unanimous.”

  1. Interesting quotes. If it is indeed an 8-4 season, then what does that say about Riley’s performance?

Last weekend, my son and his best friend, who is transferring to USC from Syracuse, went to campus to walk around. There were no security at the new facility. They were able to walk right in, and took photos of each one holding the Trojan sword. I didn’t ask him if they saw a homeless guy trying to find the jacuzzi…

You mean in the previous few years…when we played Notre Dame. Yes, softening your schedule will make it easier.

Wiley meant: During the past years we never had a chance

Wiley said: Regarding Maiava, “I don’t know that I’ve had anyone that has improved from day one to this point as Jayden has.”

Wiley meant: I’ve never had a quarterback who had to improve so much

Wiley said: Regarding the Playoffs expanding to 24 teams, “Our room has been unanimous”

Wiley meant: Are you kidding me. You know how many coaching jobs this will save?

    1. KAM: So Riley Coyote lied when he showed up in 2022 and said we would be immediately competing for championships?

      May 11, 2022

LOS ANGELES — Roughly 15 minutes after Lincoln Riley had wrapped up his first practice as USC’s new head coach, he was asked a simple question: Is competing for the Pac-12 title in Year 1 a realistic goal?

“I’m not going to take any goal off the table,” Riley said. “I said it Day 1. That’s not why we came here. So we expect to compete for and win championships every single year. I’ll save you that question for the next 10-15 years. That’s going to be the same answer. That’s just who we are as a staff. That’s what we believe in.

“And frankly, that’s what this program should be about. This is USC. The expectation here should be to win championships every single year.”

DON: Maybe he meant Hugs Helton’s mythical California championship?

  4. Hi Trojan1967, congratulation for having a son attending USC, and his best friend is smart to be transferring from Syracuse. Fight on, Dan, Class of 1962

  5. Scooter,

If Riley truly had wanted to play nd, He would have signed the contract along with Jen Taco Lita Cohen, photographed it being sealed in an envelope showing the address to nd and showing it getting mailed and sent overnight by Fed Ex.
