USC Notes: Lincoln Riley Figuring Out How To Be Successful

USC apparently suffered multiple injuries in training camp that are just coming to light.

The depth chart was already missing several key players: WR Terrell Anderson, DE Braylan Shelby and OT Elijah Vaikona.

Today, Lincoln Riley said backup safeties Marquis Gallegos and Kendarius Reddick are out for the San Jose State game. It’s the reason true freshman Madden Riordan is backing up both safety spots on Saturday.

And wide receiver Tanook Hines will be a game-time decision on whether he plays.

Now this doesn’t really matter if it a one-game injury or even three-games given the schedule. The question is who else is hurt? We don’t know because Riley doesn’t say.

  • Riley on how he improved as a coach:

“Probably my overall understanding of how USC works and then with that the longer I’ve been here you get a stronger feel for what it takes to be successful here.”

He is in his fifth season at USC and just now getting a feel for what it takes to be successful?

He is at USC!!!

What needs to be figured out? What if he were at Oregon State? Would he need 20 years to figure things out? The guy makes excuses like no one else.

I bet he didn’t mention this during his job interview with Mike Bohn.

  1. KAM: UCLA is proceeding as though it landed a massive gift this week, with 2025 Sun Belt Player of the Year Trent Hendrick joining the Bruins for practices Monday and Tuesday.

Hendrick is among 16 players who sought a Louisiana temporary restraining order allowing them to return to college after entering the NFL draft pool, arguing they would not have left had they know NCAA rules would change granting them an extra year of eligibility.

The temporary restraining order was granted last week, but the Big Ten voted on Tuesday to pass a new rule that prohibited football players who have signed a professional contract, were on a professional roster at any point or declared for the NFL draft as an underclassman without withdrawing, from maintaining eligibility for athletic competition.

DON: Hendrick, however, did not sign a contract, never earned a spot on a roster and didn’t declare for the draft as an underclassman.

      1. KAM: Ummm you realize USC plays your Bruins every year, Cowardly Gabby the UCLA Fan? And the return of a player from the NFL was banned by the Big Ten 2 days ago?

DON: Surely you can’t be that stupid.

  2. Wolf needs a one-on-one with Riley. Perhaps some of the repeated questions he asks will get answered.

That will never happen…Wolf has burned too many bridges

  3. KAM: SC already has a handful of injuries, maybe 2, and its only practice

DON: “Only practice?” Some of these good teams say practice is more difficult than the game. If you aren’t football-tough than don’t apply

    1. KAM: Only USC Insiders are allowed to know the real number and extent of USC injuries.

DON: That allows them to make more successful bets on the games.

      1. KAM: But Insiders to the program have no such restrictions.

DON: What an advantage to know who is not going to be able to play for the Trojans each week.

KAM: I did like your No. 2 and No. 3 choices, Lincoln and Washington, but the others we’ll have to debate

  5. KAM: I get a kick out of the football announcers saying about any injury, “He got dinged up.”

  7. KAM: Do I have this wrong, but didn’t SC and Notre Dame drop their game and SC replaced it with San Jose St.?

DON: This season SC would have been an underdog to ND and are now favored by more than 5-touchdowns over State. Those Trojans are always thinking

    1. KAM: Riley Coyote is always thinking of ways to avoid tough teams.

DON: That’s why they dropped the Ole Miss games scheduled for 2025 and 2026, two sure losses for Riley Coyote.

    2. The most respected college football publication, Phil Steele, ranks the Big Ten the toughest conference….and rates USC’s schedule the 13th toughest in the country….

      2. KAM: It would be tougher if Riley Coyote hadn’t weaseled out of playing ND for the next 4 years.

DON: Or would have it been rated easier?

      3. It would be tougher….probably THE toughest in country…..BUT….we don’t want it THAT tough….

  8. KAM: SC is favored by about 38 points. If it is late in the game and SC is ahead 45-10 say, do I want to be exhorting SC to get still another insulting touchdown so I win my bet?

  9. KAM: Starting in 2030 the season will kick off with an SC-Notre Dame contest, not some lackluster San Jose St game

  10. DON: You ever wonder what the San Jose St coach says to his players before they take the field against SC as 38-point underdogs?– ‘I see where you men compared to these SC city boys are 38-point ‘dogs. Well let’s go out and show them that these ‘dogs have some bite to them

KAM: I guess, “Win or lose, I’m proud of you’ wouldn’t have the same effect

    1. i wonder if SJSU’s players feel like sheep to the slaughter, knowing they are being served up for a $1.5 mil payday. they signed up to play Fresno and Cal Poly, not the Big10’s toughest team! maybe if the dough was paid out to the players as NIL bonuses or such, but how can they not feel exploited otherwise?
