USC Finally Inducts New Hall Of Fame Class

After eight long years, USC is finally going to induct a new Hall of Fame class.

And with football, it seems like they listened to this blog on a couple picks. Offensive lineman Marvin Powell and defensive back Dennis Thurman were selected, which solves the embarrassment of the duo already being in the College Football Hall of Fame but not the USC Hall of Fame.

Another choice long-championed by this blog is basketball player Jack Gardner.

Gardner was the first coach to lead two different schools (Kansas State, Utah) to the Final Four and one of a handful who went to the Final Four multiple times with two schools (1948, 1951, 1961, 1966). Gardner was considered an expert in the fast-break offense and had a career record of 486-235. As a scout for the Utah Jazz, he was credited with discovering John Stockton.

Less urgent was the inclusion of QB Paul McDonald. I think you make the case for some other players, including one named McDonald, two-time All-American safety Tim McDonald.

Here is the full class:

Damon Bame (football), Bill Bordley (baseball), Anna Maria Fernandez (tennis), Steve Furniss (swimming), Jack Gardner (basketball), Dwayne Jarrett (football), Balazs Kiss(track and field), Paul McDonald (football), Marvin Powell (football), Pat Powers (volleyball), Janice-Lee York Romary (fencing), Kaitlin Sandeno (swimming), Dennis Thurman (football), Moriah Van Norman (water polo), Robert Van’t Hof (tennis), Patty Van Wolvelaere (track and field), Mike Williams (football), Randy Williams (track and field) and Rhonda Windham (basketball).

  1. A fabulous class – Powell, Thurman, and the rest of the ’76 team (Bell, Evans, Jeter, Matthews, Martin, Gay, Diggs, et al) are possibly the most underrated in USC’s long, glorious football history (if only they had pushed “play” one week earlier, but we’ve kicked that can around here) …

      1. Of course he wasn’t!

They knew he couldn’t beat DT in an honest election, in which voters now had the facts about who their candidate really was. After that debate, they weren’t going to get away with the con job again. Most of the gullible people who fell for it in 2020 finally opened their eyes and declared, “The emperor has no brain!”

  2. “Less urgent” was the inclusion of Paul McDonald? All he did was lead SC to a national championship in 1978 and should have won one in 1979 as an All-American quarterback

    1. Agreed. Quarterbacked USC to my most treasured Trojan memory (dominating Alabama in 1978 – SI’s “It Was Sum Game” entitled referring to McDonald’s intelligence in the classroom as well as on the gridiron). Big game against Notre Dame in 1979. Several others. Key contributor to that two year stretch of greatness.

      1. Seem to recall the SI article referred to his left-handedness. Would also think that Leonard would be a fitting inclusion in that legacy. Also had some of the same characteristics (very smart, not supremely athletic, not the strongest arm, but almost always clutch).

      2. KAM: Sam Darnold was inducted into the San Clemente High School Hall of Fame but NOT the USC Hall of Fame, after becoming the ONLY USC Quarterback to Lead his team to victory in the Super Bowl over the New England Patriots 29-13 and leading the Trojans to a 52-49 victory over Penn State in the 2017 Rose Bowl?

  3. This is a good class. USC has had so many outstanding athletes that picking just a few does not do justice to hundreds of other athletes. Maybe there should be a certain criteria like All American status or Olympic Gold Medalist and supplement with subjective selections for all sports, especially those that don’t get much attention. Fight on, Dan, Class of 1962

DON: That’s our Cowardly Sparrow Gabby. The real John left 2 years ago in a huff.

  4. no SC HOF would be complete without a tribute to the wolfman…i’m picturing a corner of HHall with a new exhibit called the Wolf’s Den with Scott Wolf memorabilia including his old typewriter, photos of him with cheerleaders and of course the image of him in the “Bush Push” photo wearing the iconic Blue Capital One soccer jersey!!

  5. Four years ago, someone on this board was dumb enough to claim we didn’t like Bass because she is black.

A commie just beat her, because she was the miserable failure we knew she would be. It has NOTHING to do with her color.

That’s exactly how DT got back into the White House, too. JB was also a miserable failure, the way smart people knew he would be. If he hadn’t been, DT wouldn’t have won in 2024.

      1. KAM: Cowardly Sparrow Gabby knows dumb and stupid like no other. Remember when she claimed Mexicans had lived in California for hundreds of years, when the truth is that Mexico became a country in 1821 and California left Mexico 27 years later in 1848?

Not artfully written, but it is true that some Mexicans lived in California for hundreds of years.
