UCLA Wins Crosstown Cup
I’m not even sure why USC and UCLA continue this competition between themselves when they do almost nothing to promote it. UCLA won this year’s competition, 115-75, but you really needed to search for it to find anything. And don’t ask for updates during the season anymore. USC’s been fairly silent because it has lost four of the past six years. But at least when … Continue reading UCLA Wins Crosstown Cup
Sunday Notes
The NFLPA Rookie event this weekend had its picture day at Cal Lutheran with the Coliseum unavailable. Sam Darnold is in the back row. Ronald Jones is in Row 3. USC’s Hall of Fame dinner last night featured former baseball coach Mike Gillespie. “I will be in the wing for fired coaches,” Gillespie said. I mentioned USC’s four-overtime victory over UCLA in 1985 yesterday. The … Continue reading Sunday Notes
A Larry Friend Memory
USC point guard Larry Friend, who passed away Tuesday, was an integral part of two of the best victories I witnessed over crosstown rival UCLA in 1985. The Trojans defeated the Bruins, 78-77, in double overtime at the Sports Arena on Feb. 1. The rematch on Feb. 28 was even better. The two teams went four overtimes at Pauley Pavilion. The score was tied, 78-78, … Continue reading A Larry Friend Memory
Three-Star QB Commits To USC
May is apparently the month of three stars. Kedon Slovis, a three-star quarterback from Scottsdale, Ariz., committed to USC today. Slovis (6-2, 186) also received offers from Hawaii, North Carolina State, New Mexico State, Oregon State, San Jose State, SMU, Arizona State, Indiana, Vanderbilt and UC Davis. Slovis will be a year behind JT Daniels. Maybe he figures he will redshirt and sit two seasons … Continue reading Three-Star QB Commits To USC
USC Morning Buzz: Saturday Notes/Takes
USC cornerback Jack Jones is academically ineligible according to TrojanSports.com. To be ineligible with no hope of summer courses helping him would mean Jones is in a dire situation academically. For the past few months, I’ve heard Jones might have other issues that could imperil his status next season. I’m still looking into it. But if Jones leaves USC, what a disaster it will be … Continue reading USC Morning Buzz: Saturday Notes/Takes
Former USC Point Guard Larry Friend Dies
Larry Friend, the starting point guard on USC’s last conference championship team in 1985, died on Tuesday of cancer. He was 54. Friend was named USC’s Best Defensive Player three times. In 1986, he was USC’s MVP and Most Inspirational Player. By the end of his career, he set USC assist records for for a game (14 versus Texas in 1985), season (176 in 1985) and … Continue reading Former USC Point Guard Larry Friend Dies
