USC Tuesday Buzz

Four-star cornerback Erick Young of Richmond, Texas, will announce his commitment tomorrow afternoon. Does it matter that he is wearing a USC jacket today at The Opening combine?

  • Six fraternities and sororoties are suing USC over a new policy that prohibits freshmen from participating in Greek life during their first semester. Students must complete at least 12 units at USC and maintain a 2.5 minimum GPA prior to joining a fraternity or sorority.

The policy was announced last year so it sure seems like the Greek organizations are going after USC while it is reeling from its recent scandals. The lawsuit comes from the Sigma Chi, Beta Theta Pi, Theta Xi and Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternities and Kappa Alpha Theta sorority.

  1. Anyone who can’t complete the first semester at USC with at least a 2.5 GPA probably shouldn’t be allowed on campus let alone in a fraternity or sorority. But —speaking of “scandals” — I bet it will be found that Max Nikias did nothing other than follow USC’s lawyers’ recommendations at every step. GENERALLY speaking, it’s better to follow rather than buck your Legal Department’s advice. So who’s really at fault here? Max or his advisers? [Or both]?

    1. It shall be found as you stated – Nikias acted like anything but the leader of a major university and the salary he was paid. Someone or someones leaked these settlements to ‘the street’ and that was because Nikias showed nothing but weakness and a total lack of ‘playing the man’. They were leaked because they needed to be and the sooner, not just Nikias, but the admin officials that crafted this ‘cover-up’ are gone the better. Bet it was Michael Quick and James Staten that are the source of counsel.

  2. Can’t join Greek life?!

How else are the Greek kids supposed to keep that 2.5 G.P.A. if they aren’t allowed to join and have access to that passed around library of previously written term papers to copy and write from? (You know, what other schools do).

  3. A thought on Mad Max, does anyone suppose that he misunderstood when he was told that the campus gynecologist was sticking his fingers in student’s hoo-haws and taking pictures? He was probably asking, “isn’t that what gynecologist fellows do?” Maybe a case for misunderstood communication ? C’mon lawyers stick it to the doctor’s malpractice insurance.

  4. Wow it’s a tough call, should USC just say bye bye to these antiquated system of fraternal organizations or should they stick to their guns? While these organizations add nothing to school other than keeping students busy after school, they do have some connections of value. However, maybe kids should just use LinkedIn and kill the frat houses like all of the other things millennial kids are killing.

  5. Fraternity Row does a lot of good for the community through Philanthropic work….More so, than the general student body.
