Former USC Great Willie Brown Dies

Willie Brown, who is probably one of the greatest athletes in USC history, died today of cancer.

Here’s my favorite example of his ability: In the 1963 Rose Bowl, No. 1 USC played No. 2 Wisconsin. Brown had 108 yards receiving, returned kickoffs 41-and-31 yards and made perhaps the key play of the game with an interception in the end zone.

In 1962, he set a then-record with a 93-yard touchdown run against SMU. He played more minutes than any other player in 1962 with 367 minutes for the national championship team.

He also rushed for 335 yards in a single game at Long Beach Poly. Brown was also an assistant coach on USC coach John McKay’s staff and followed him to Tampa Bay.

  1. Great athlete. Great Trojan. Thanks for winning that Rose Bowl [and helping us to grab the National Championship], Willie. Rest in peace.

  2. With stats like his you’d think he would have been the first Heisman trophy winner for SC but he doesn’t appear in the voting. I would claim East Coast bias but some guy from Oregon State won the trophy.

    1. Yeah Terry Baker OR St. (one of Tommy Prothro’s boys). Baker the only player to have won the Heisman and played in NCAA men’s basketball ‘final four’ and # 1 overall draft pick by the Rams in 1963.

  3. His high school games were track meets…avg about 20 yds / carry, maybe better. Privileged to watch him both high school games and SC football and baseball…he was special.
