USC Morning Buzz: What Can JT Daniels Expect The First Few Games

An NFL defensive coordinator told me this morning he doesn’t expect USC’s early opponents to use much press converage in the secondary with JT Daniels at quarterback.

He expects teams to blitz Daniels a lot and by laying off press coverage, it will make it harder for Daniels to throw fade routes.

By blitzing, it will also make it a lot harder to run the ball, the coordinator said.

  • Safety Ykili Ross, who was with the first team at the start of training camp, was removed from USC’s roster and will transfer to another school after he gradutes this semester.
  • Former USC wide receiver Marqise Lee will require knee surgery and miss the season following a hit to his knee in last weekend’s Jacksonville exhibition game.
  • USC’s football/basketball commit, Drake London, had four catches for 78 yards and one TD in Moorpark’s 44-21 victory over Burbank.

  1. I think Scott is right —teams are gonna try to blitz the shit outta Daniels. Helton and J. T. know this, too. Look for Daniels to burn defenses real bad until they realize this isn’t the way to go with a smart, accurate thrower.

      1. He is masters of the whole game. Short and long. I wonder why the anonymous coaches never tell us what we’ll do to counter them? Screen pass anyone? From all accounts, this last weeks was about screen passes and running backs on various short routes.

      2. Pudly —-Helton knows exactly what Daniels is gonna face in the first three games and —you’re right —- he’s gonna kill defenses with lots of short stuff to people who are dangerous in space (i.e., all those speedy skill players people have been complaining about us recruiting too many of)…..

      3. Mike it’s a new day for most of us. New qb, rb, wr, etc., so if we can’t be happy with the team today, then when. Hopefully JT continues on his pattern os success, we bring in more talent (preferably more wr as you can never have enough) and this train keeps on rolling down the track!
I heard there was discussions among the coaches of bringing in more linemen but they decided why give the bloggers a reason to be happy. Hence the release of Jonah T from his silent commitment.

      5. I am hearing rumors that Swann wants to bring in former Laker Vlade Divac to be offensive line consultant. He’ll be teaching the flop as a blocking technique and drawing penalties against the defense.

    1. I’d like to hear for the public, Michael, what USC September football record you predict and what is acceptable?

      2. Run rabbit 🐇 run lol….McGiggles says 5-0….Let’s go, Trojans, get up! Don’t let them take our china….protect the china!….that’s what I tell my daughter to this day…it arose back when she was a volleyball player and I used to tell her and the team, “protect the china”! “china” means trophy or title or keepsake in house…..the varsity volleyball team didn’t lose a league game in the 4 years she was at the school, 2 of which she played varsity. So, I say to the staff and players, “protect the china!”

      3. Pudly —If I were smart, I’d stay away from predictions (so many variables, including injuries) —but, as we all know, I’m not smart —-I predict USC will take four out of the first five.

  2. If I am the d coordinator for UNLV and knowing my talent is not as good as SC’s, Im gonna blitz my lbers and db’s. Try and confuse the soft serve ice cream oline and hopefully sack the qb and create turnovers.

      1. UNLV loses two starters off their d-line and their best tackling linebacker, Brian Keyes —if our o-line can’t keep these guys from sacking Daniels, we’re in trouble.

    1. Its not what they do. It’s what we do. We need to use UNLV as a scrimmage for Stanford. A game plan that keeps us on the field to eat the clock with high percentage success plays. We DON’T want to play the into the hands of the “chinese handcuffs” game plan of Stanford.

  3. The biggest question is…. will UNLV be Gomer’s Memphis State ?

Oh, and our OL is so bad and poorly coaches that Carson Palmer would struggle, hope Daniels can run

      1. I’ve found that guys on message boards usually know significantly more about football than lifelong professional coaches. I’m sure everything Buddha posts is spot on.

  4. Mike ‘live at budokan’ strikes me as a ‘ringer’ anyway a lot of good matchups this coming weekend beside USC and bel-air tech:

    FAU @ OK + 20.5
    OR St. @ OH St. + 37
    BYU @ AZ + 11.5
    WA – Auburn + 2.5 (neutral site)
    TN – WV + 10 (neutral site)
    NC @ CA + 7.5
    @ Liberty – Old Dominion + 6
    @ ‘the princess’ – MI + 1
    LSU – Miami + 3 (neutral site)

I speculate OK will not cover the 20.5 over FAU ‘because’ Kiffin is a much better coach than anyone in the 4th estate is willing to admit (think hatred of Trump – rather similar). OH St. vs. OR St. / only because ‘St. Urban’ got found out i.e. internal troubles
The Old Dominion vs. Liberty is interesting because this is the first foray by Liberty up into the FBS Division 1 (set for 2019) against a Conf. USA team (OD).
    LSU/Miami….Notre Dame/MI…..WA/Auburn – – – loser lucky first game of season+++ winners blessed beating a ranked opponent.
