Can you believe this?

USC is playing a really bad team and up 21-14 at the half and 28-21 as I write this.

What is Clancy Pendergast doing? He never covers the middle of the field. It’s such a joke.

UPDATED: USC wins, 38-21. Another ugly win. The defense looked below average and isn’t it funny Clay Helton made some changes (taking snaps under center, using a fullback) like he couldn’t do it before with Tee Martin?

UPDATED II: Clay Helton said WR Michael Pittman suffered a shoulder injury and TB Stephen Carr suffered a “lower-body injury.”

  3. Oregon State is 128th out of 129 teams in total defense. The game should have been over already. But an incompetent coaching staff is keeping Oregon State in the game.

  4. Oh yes, it would have been quite impressive if the team has just beaten Notre Dame with the same score to hand them their first loss of the season. Say what? It was OSU with a record of 2-6 and a QB standing around like a rangy scarecrow? Oh, what a bummer!!! lol.

  7. OSU left everything they have on the field in Boulder. A wins a win, but SC is stuck in mediocrity this season. No doubt they could loose all 3 remaining games. Yup…even ucla.

  8. Get the lead and then panic and wait for the other team to come back. The D is still terrible. Cannot cover even rudimentary crossing routes and lost out there plenty of other times.
    I really do believe that both corona centennial and bosco have better D than sc does.

  9. Although Oregon State lost, Johnathon Smith is another PAC 12 coach who seems to be more talented then Clay Helton, and you can add Arizona States, Herm Edwards to that list. Can you imagine what opposing coaches could do with USC’s talent ? I think most of the coaches in the conference would take the Trojans to the playoffs, and only a SC Fan Boy would get excited about the win last night

  10. I agree with others in that I don’t think we can draw a lot of conclusions about last night’s game because of the quality of the opponent. It seems strange that you would rush for 330 yds, hold your opponent to 30 yards rushing and yet be about even in time of possession. I guess those short, high percentage throws OSU makes end up being like long handoffs. The sacks helped too, but you wouldn’t think a team would be in the game as long as OSU was with all that happening. Anyway, I was somewhat encouraged as I wasn’t sure we were capable of completing a 17 play drive against air before last night. Further, even allowing for the opponent, it was my sense that the play calling was better and the O-line better organized. Also, I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention the nice deep balls JT was putting out there. I needed to see him do that and now I need to see him do it with pressure coming at him.

    Defensively, again, the opponent makes it tough, but Cam Smith running down a receiver in the open field was pretty cool. Ajene Harris has been playing better as the season has gone on, but he missed a pretty easy pick that he should’ve had in the second half. I don’t understand how you see the ball the whole way like that and then overrun it like that. You go up with two hands and only get one hand on it because you ran past the spot on the field at which you should’ve jumped. That’s not what a coordinated, D1 skill player on either side of the ball does. He does stick his hand out and catch a tipped ball for an interception, unless he’s really just a guy and he really just got lucky. Which is it? Cam could’ve picked one off too. Even with the 6 sacks and stingy rush defense, there were no turnovers and I’d give the game ball to the offense this game. A couple turnovers would’ve allowed for the blowout that the other numbers indicate was there to be had.

    1. Ajene Harris started out trying to compete at slot receiver. If he could’ve caught the ball, he’d probably still be on offense. Same as most dbs. Biggie dropped one too, didn’t he? They certainly had their chances to turn them over.
      Defense made a simple adjustment that worked and shut osu down at the end of the third and in the 4th quarters by simply switching Biggie from right to left corner.
      Lastly, it was nice seeing the offensive line not looking around, but just hitting someone, anyone. Oy vey. It was a start.

      2. Good point about Ajene, but that ball had some air under it and was up there a long time. Like I said, he saw it the whole way, he wasn’t in a full sprint and it was an easy opportunity. Let’s not forget that we’re talking about a 5th yr (?) senior. All of these people we’re calling out are seniors and captains.

        I saw them move Biggie over and it’s too bad we have to do that. I’ve missed Jack Jones almost as much as I’ve missed you. Good to see you. Good post, keep it coming.

    2. Another thing, how do you get 6 sacks and never knock the ball loose? In football and basketball, the tall, lanky guys are the easiest to rip. That’s something I always want to be thinking about, but especially against a guy like that.

  12. Saw Drevno actually getting after the line on the sideline last night. I am certain if it were up to him Toa would have been sat for a while. I’ll take any improvement or signs of it. Last night was a very baby step forward.

  13. Jack Sears looked a lot better against ASU–for whatever that’s worth–than JT Daniels against OSU …. I guess it’s because the Beaves are better than the Sun Devils…I know Sears used the Tight Ends a lot and moved around in the pocket to find some short passes, instead of standing still and heaving it, down either sideline, as The Heltons game plans demand… this probably explains why Sears was relegated to standing on the sidelines, in the same spot, ball cap on, not moving a muscle…poor kid, stayed in that spot all night, even when asst. coaches periodically walked by and tried to knock or move him off that spot….Sears looked like one of those guards at Buckingham Palace, not even moving an eye muscle……I don’t think he went into the locker room after the game until Helton’s eyes–Tee Martin–came and got him… I hope Sears learned his lesson….

    1. Thank you, Ben. The hit job they did on Sears,for, what we see now, is inexcusable. That’s one reason why I don’t mind what Mr. Swann does with this staff, and I’ve been one of their big supporters. They misinformed Trojan Nation on Jack Sears. SO DID MANY HERE! I will, and so should you, keep that in mind as we move forward and decide who’s who. People who don’t recognize talent disgust, especially if they’re paid. In the least, I don’t see JT Daniels near the point in his career where he deserves or deserved all the snaps from the get go. Critical staff errors in judgement cannot be overlooked or dismissed. The center position is similar, not to mention the substandard safeties we have. All American Tell? Please…..we’re so depleted there now, who knows when it will improve. And what of Jack Sears now? Do we have ANOTHER TRANSFER OUT? Helton and staff have made the university look bad on this number alone. Yesterday, I watched North Carolina State play and was happy to see Cary Angeline involved, 2 catches for 28 yards, while our remaining tight ends have done little to nothing to distinguish themselves…that coach’s contract should have been terminated long ago.

      2. If I were Lynn Swann,what would I tell Clay Helton in their Monday meeting? Alternate quarterbacks until this is sorted out. Find a way. I don’t need to hear all the traditional qb situation bs, just do it! The same goes for the center position! This season is no longer sacred, and we need to use our time wisely to protect the university’s investment. Clay and staff need to be held accountable in ALL they do because they’ve shown they can’t and won’t do it on their own.
