Discuss The USC-UCLA Game

UPDATED II: What an utter disgrace. Awful on both side of the ball. Awful play calling. Clancy Pendergast is MIA on run defense.

Clay Helton was asked after the game if he is returning:

“That’s a question for Mr. Swann.”

Fans screamed that Helton should be fired as he walked off the field.

“It doesn’t bother me,” he said. “It rolls off my back, so I’m not worried about it.”

My take: Faith, Family and 5-7.

UPDATED: Lots of big plays. Two bad teams playing each other.

Is Clancy Pendergast coaching today?

How long until a false start? Or head-scratching play call?

    1. With all due respect, why was Marcus Peters (#47) in there? Did John Houston get hurt?
The bigger question was, why was Malik Dorton (44) in there? Oh, I get it- they’re Seniors and they know the significance of beating the baby bears. It doesn’t matter that Dorton was getting clobbered and that UCLA continually ran his way knowing that the dude is not a D1 DT. Jay Tufele, Brandon Pili, heck Biggie Marshall would’ve done better (joking). Jacob Daniels was inexplicably moved over to OG; the dude was about 330 and was stout. Good grief.

      1. Helton does not seem to really mind losing. In fact, he just makes excuses after the team has underperformed. I think Pat Riley said that those who make excuses after a loss have accepted losing as an outcome.

  1. I’m sorry, but grabby is not a cornerback. He loses his man too easily. He would better serve himself and his team in a different position like outside linebacker or safety

  2. 3 timeouts unused….a bit too conservative to end the first half…just gave away 2 minutes or more in scoring opportunity.

  3. Clay Helton is the third “coach” in a row we have had who believes half-time adjustments are a myth. I am cautiously “optimistic” … lol

    1. And, we score 3 points after halftime. Outscored 13-3 second half, and lose. 24 points scored by Trojans before halftime, 3 after. Halftime adjustments, indeed, are a myth when you are being coached by the likes of Kiffin, Sarkisian, and Helton. But, other, legitimate, coaches seem quite able to make them.

  4. Same old. Same old.

No second half adjustments. No second half offense. Ineffective secondary. Some really bad play calling. Lack of discipline.

And all of this against a really bad 2-8 team.

    1. But not bad enough to lose to SUCC FB. Can’t wait to see “Biggie’s” self-produced ‘Check me out, I really SUCC” UCLA game video.

Come on guys, give clay a break. Freshman qb, young team overall, this is a learning year. He’ll have most of the team back next year, Daniels will take a big step forward… good times are ahead. Viva Clay!!!!

      Ooooh that smell
The stink of SUCC FB surrounds you

I’d like to thank the bozo u defense for allowing R. Kelly 287 yards as that helped UCLA bitch slap SUCC silly 34 – 27. How about J.T. Daniels, UCLA couldn’t have won w/o his help. Three cheers for J.T.

UCLA, 3 – 8 now OWNS LA Collegiate FB.

Can’t wait for next week’s Notre Dame’s slaughter of bozo u.

  5. Clay has no one to blame, but himself…he gave away a scoring opportunity at the end of the first half and one in the second half, running the ball on 3rd and 21 on the Bruin 40, resulting in a punt, instead of a possible field goal. NOT TO MENTION, HE’S BEEN PLAYING THE WRONG QB AND CENTER, EVEN THOUGH HE WAS WARNED OVER AND OVER AND OVER AGAIN….could have made the difference today…I guess, you folks don’t take me serious… now, we’re sorry, with a big empty hole in our stomach. So much for the experts.

Congrats to them! They were smart and got themselves a great coach! Next week we will get blowned out by ND and it will be GOOD BY HELTON!! I hope everyone at the game BOOS HELTON!

      3. No, you should coach SC football. You might surpass Gomer in it because it’d be pretty tough to do any worse than him.

  7. Media buzz: “Clay Helton is in trouble. USC coach Clay Helton entered Saturday’s game against cross-town rival UCLA on one of the hottest seats in the country, and it might be even worse after losing to the Bruins. Quarterback JT Daniels tossed two interceptions, the defense got torched by Bruins running back Joshua Kelly for 289 yards and the Trojans fell to the 3-8 Bruins 34-27. It is USC’s first six-loss season since 2000 and the Trojans first loss to an opponent with eight losses since Nov. 26, 1960.”

Lynn Swann will probably show up in the losers’ locker room with hot chocolate and cookies for the team.

    Weird Days at Ol’ SC….

    1. PT starts the auld bozo loser excuses, excuses, excuses routine.

Next thing you know PT will be claiming that if UCLA hadn’t been on the field SUCC would’ve won the game.

Typical PT, making lame loser excuses is much easier than admitting the better FB team (UCLA) won the game.

  10. You can blame the quarterback or you can blame the center (although you can clearly hear the bruins disconcerting on his “illegal snap”) you can blame the lack of tackling or blame receivers for dropping balls, but this loss as were the previous two are on Clay we faught like warriors Helton. It had bern painfully obvious for more than a season that he is not NOT a college football head coach. A blind man deaf in one ear could point this out. Why we are suffering this boob for as long as we have is beyond belief. He has the wrong man snapping the ball to the wrong boy to throw it up for god knows who for a whole season. And he still has the school’s backing? JK Rowling couldn’t write this good of a plot. Jesus just come back now satan has my team.

  11. Notice Daniles walking away from that entire squad huddle just prior to the very last possession by USC. You see an assistant yelling at Daniels to get back and ‘listen’. This loss was as much Daniels as it was Helton’s….Daniels has 5 losses to match his 5 wins….a truly arrogant ‘know-it-all’ player whose daddy and former coaches did everything to encourage that mindset.

  12. This was my first time in 35 years that I was cheering for UCLA, and I’m hoping Notre Dame blows the doors off of USC, because it will finally seal the deal on a real football coach

    1. Thanks for the UCLA love, Mr. Samson. However, I doubt Helton will be jettisoned this year.

I firmly believe Helton is forced to start Daniels regardless of his freshman mistakes and mediocre performance. Sears is QB in the Piglet style, which Helton prefers. Daniels will never be the college QB he was at Mater Dei.

  13. Trojans will finish 5-7, and will likely lose by 3 or more touchdowns to ND.

To save his own job, Swann would really have no choice other than to fire Helton. So if Helton is not fired, then it suggests that the higher administration is telling Swann not to do it. That would seem to be a bigger problem – is the university still committed to having a football program that is competitive with the best?

  14. A few years ago USC was labeled a clown college. The label seemed unfair, but painfully accurate. We have a strong of former jocks without administration training running one of the most prestigious programs in the country into the ground. Swann is in over his head. He’s good for fund raising or hand shaking, but when comes to the daily grind of running a multi million dollar program, he’s lost. He certainly cannot believe he has a good program at the marquee spot

  15. That was embarrassing .. Swann net too announce Helton isn’t coming back ASAP!!!! Unfortunately I am hearing alot of Jack Del Rio talk…. I think we need to go outside the SC Family ties .We have to interview Matt Campbell … Jeff Brohm … Josh Heupel etc… If we do go with Del Rio he has to hire a OC like a Jedd Fisch .. The reason for JT Daniels struggling is definitely coaching .. The best example is Jared Goof .. He gets a good young offensive mind and now he is an MVP candidate

    1. One thing a new coach could do to benefit the team is make this kid understand half of this mess is his – 100% his. Watching him go into melt-down mold after he threw that awful deep up the middle pass late in the 4th qtr. sealing the loss was telling. It had ‘why me? This has never happened before! I’m J.T. ‘bleeping’ Daniels….this happens to other guys NOT me.

After that witness Daniels walking away from that final entire squad/coaching staff discussion just prior to the final USC possession of the game. There was an assistant who barked at Daniels who turned quickly around and came back to all the rest.

SC looked like a team that practices in shorts, unfortunately as long as Helton is there this will continue, he has done it his entire tenure. In addition he cuts practice sessions during regular season , and bowl games, conducts worthless spring ball and fall camp is nothing to get excited about. He has the least competitive teams physically in the Pac12;the players are the most talented individually, but this is a team sport , and very physical sport.SC needs a real football head coach.

you guys should never have fired Kiffen in that parking lot

UCLA is a low level pac12 team – but not as bad as Colorado or the beavs

Oregon ALMOST lost the same kind of game last night – and now our team has become much like yours…

we have future pros – but the team as a whole is under-performing

but at least your team beat Washington State this year – that is something
