USC Morning Buzz: The Circus Continues

I have details on USC247.com about how members of a support group were told by a USC official on Tuesday that Clay Helton would return next season.

Is this real or just a smokescreen? My thoughts here.

This is just one more small example of what a circus USC is. Other schools run coaching searches with a committee and interview several candidates. They have an athletic director who will say they review coaches after a season. They have an athletic director who has been an athletic director.

They don’t let a mega-donor decide whether they keep a coach. They see no discipline within a program and act upon it.

USC does nothing. Its top people bury their heads inside Heritage Hall and hope everyone continues to blindly buy season tickets. Are you one of the suckers?

    1. I wish I could be surprised that insiders are convinced that we will get another season of Helton. However, after Kiffin, Sark, and Helton as Football HC’s. Garrett, Haden, and Swann as AD’s. O’Neill and Enfield in BB. AND disastrous baseball program…. NOBODY should be surprised at the level of incompetence….and I’m a rah rah….

      1. The legendary arrogance, suspect intelligence, and useless self-importance of SC’s “good ol’ boys club” finally comes crashing down on the university, washing away the football program that made them look good for so many years. Call it cultural dry rot. Shame!

  1. Lifelong USC fan, but I’m no sucker. In fact, I’ve kinda enjoyed this season because the incompetence at all levels has been exposed. If the incompetents continue to display their incompetence, I’m at peace with letting go of the football program. There are other ways to spend my energy.

  2. Yep – bulls eye…if they don’t do the obvious right thing, don’t spend a penny more in a way that supports them…and don’t get manipulated (as they and their media sycophants attempt to do) into thinking this means you are fair-weather or disloyal – the institution has done wrong by the fans, not the other way around…not supporting the institution with expenditures is not the same thing as “failing to support these kids” as they would have you believe…feel bad for the kids who’ve had their collegiate experience degraded by the incompetence of the powers that be…but not for the powers that be or their interests…and don’t think that this will inevitably course correct, just because it has a couple of times before…it can easily go down other paths (in particular, look at the program at Miami)…in the end, it’s a game…there’s plenty else out there to find satisfaction in…

    1. Can you blame the Megadonor for not wanting to pay for someone’s gross negligence and incompetence? NO….to say the least!

      1. Any mega donor would be foolish NOT to invest in the renovation of SC’s crumbling football program. “Someone else’s gross negligence”?! It’s the donors’ gross negligence to ignore this catastrophe. Geeze, man….really?!

  3. We need to find out exactly who originated, approved and offered the overplayed contract extensions. That is the person, or people, who should reap what they’ve sewn. They have poor judgment! NO, IT’S NOT HINDSIGHT! One year extensions would have been fine. These dudes weren’t going to leave. What? Were they going to abandon their personal investments simply because they were extended only 1 year, on the back end of 2 or 3? NO. If they did, fine. On their best days, no one on this staff was burning it up. So, to bind the school to multi-year deals was, and is, a fireable offense for lack of professional perspective. Uh, Mr/Mrs. Megadonor, we need a bailout? Uh, Mr, USC, why? How’d you get into this mess? Uh, uh, uh…..AND YOU WANT ME TO SHELL OUT MILLIONS FOR THAT? NO WAY…SUFFER!

      1. Whoever got outnegotiated, they have wasted $millions, and alienated much of the customer base, putting the corporation in unnecessary jeopardy. These are actionable offenses…. Iterim, or not.

  4. This may be the interim President being unwilling to make a change, rather than Swann, but obviously hard to say which it is.

In addition to ND, Trojans play Stanford, Oregon, and Washington next year. Could be 7-5 or worse in 2019 with Helton.

    1. Agreed – we’ve all followed the program for a long time and have seen this before…it won’t just get better because it’s USC (I lovs a quote attributed to Larry Smith in I believe it was the article about the upset of UCLA/Aikman in 1987 to gain the Rose Bowl…talking about overcoming the problems in the program’s culture at that time Smith said to the effect of “We had to teach people you’re just not automatically good because you wear cardinal and gold and walk around holding you hand up in a ‘V’ sign…”)…and the administration is demonstrating staggering degrees of cluelessness in the way it is handling this…

  5. Want to see a placid, tepid alumni become raging mad?

Keep that bumbling idiot Gomer around!

He makes himself look bad, the program look bad, the players look bad, and the University look bad. Alumni won’t have it and should be asked to accept it, while at the same time being asked to give to the University.

    THROW THE BUM OUT!!!!!!!!!

  6. The Rams are good and a blast to watch. The Chargers are good, though very Charger-ish at times. These are excellent alternatives for my football dollar/viewing time.

If USC doesn’t care about the football team, no reason why I should. My Saturdays next year look to be free.

    Go Rams!

  7. To all who hold season tickets: go to the ND game this Saturday and bring the Turkey carcass from Thursday along. When they announce Lynn Swann’s name, throw the turkey carcasses onto the field. Also, better yet, when they announce his name, everyone turns their backs on him

  8. For all of you 99 percent who are in agreement for the firing of Coach Helton: What coaches in the past SIXTY years have you been happy with?

I am 57 and have not missed a game in thirty years. Roy ‘USCSYCO’ has more games than me, but not many others do.

Plus, and this is a for sure fact, no one but me has stayed after the games to “congratulate/better luck next Saturday” the players after EVERY game for the past ten years.

So yeah. Those are my credentials for being a fan. I always root for USC no matter what. How can people say they are fans but root against the boys so that the coach gets fired? Are you serious? If you do that, then don’t ever go see another game again.

So let me repeat my question. What coaches in the past SIXTY years have you so called fans been happy with?

  9. The fact that Clay Helton received a contract extension, tells me that either Lynn Swann is a complete idiot, who’s not paying attention to the program, or he’s just a figurehead athletic director, while people behind the scenes, who have no idea what there doing, are calling the shots

    1. This is ALL Swann’s mess – guy reminds one of a concierge. “Welcome to Shadow Pines resort and spa…you’ll find all the amenities you expect starting with our 24 hour buffet. Don’t forget the ‘sing along’ with those great 70’s artists Kenny Loggins and Jim Messina in the main ballroom performing nightly for the next 6 mos.. BTW if you haven’t registered to vote 2020 is right around the corner…check out is at 9:00 am sharp.”

  10. Some basic numbers: 250 mill for the McKay Center. Another 300 mill for the renovation of the Coliseum. How much was the new housing facility? How much in settlements for the perv doctor? There are two ways of looking at this: One, you’ve already spent some big bucks in upgrading the football facilities, why stop here? Finish the job, get a great HC. Two, no more mula- betting on the infinitesimally small chance that Clay works out.
