USC Morning Buzz: Memo To Graham Harrell

Maybe before Graham Harrell officially sets up in Kliff Kingsbury’s old office, there are some things he should know:

  • Does he know three of four team captains asked Clay Helton to start Jack Sears over JT Daniels? And Helton said, “my hands are tied.”
  • Does he know Tee Martin tried to discipline a starting wide receiver during the 2017 USC-UCLA game by taking him out and Helton overruled him?
  • Does he know a player took off his uniform before the 2018 USC-Notre Dame game because he was upset he wasn’t going to start and refused to play?
  • Does he know the refs at the 2018 USC-Notre Dame game told Helton at least twice there were not enough men on the field for special teams plays?
  • Does he know two football staff members (not coaches) were disciplined for appearing to be drunk on the sideline this season?
  • Does he know a USC player told an assistant coach he would beat him up on the sideline of the 2018 USC-UCLA game because the coach reprimanded the player for committing a penalty?
  • Does he know Helton secretly called plays while maintaining Tee Martin called every play?

Welcome aboard Graham!

He might have asked for $1.5 million per year if he knew all this.

  1. The question that needs to be posed regarding Graham Harrell is: How much genuine latitude will he have in running the offense and giving the players the development and leadership to make SC a contender in the Pac12, as well as, nationally? If we are told he will be “the man” and Helton does an “end run” like he did with T. Martin, then we’re back to the “clusterfu..k” that existed during the 2018 season. If Helton wants to exit his stint as HC for SC without too much baggage, then he needs to move away from all the dysfunctional leadership he learned about and implemented and give Harrel some space to try and move the squad forward without worrying about whether or not the HC will be “mindfu..king” him while he’s doing his job as OC. There is hope for a brighter future regarding SC football if adjustments and reliable caveats are established prior to the season kicking off in September 2019. I want to have a positive mindset, but as long as Helton is still hanging around, there will always be an inkling if doubt, if you can catch my drift.

  2. helton has no plan except to figure a way to hang on to the millions promised him , and could not care less…he just goes through the motions of doing what is expected of one that is going down for the last time, laughing all the way to the bank.

  3. Nothing about our talented basketball team that sits at 12-9 in a very bad Pac 12 conference? I mean last night Andy looked good with his suit and hanky in his pocket while Hopkins loosened his tie and rolled up his sleeves in workman type fashion

  4. I have one more to add…does Graham know that most of his offensive players are criminals and state of California has done away with cash bail system? He may have to pull “white boys” from greek row to play some WR. So much for air-raid….

    1. Insider USC info.

In years past we played a game. Add up expulsions, rescinded Heismans, felony arrests & convictions, days of NCAA investigations and/or days of FBI investigations. Add those up for SC & add up the rest of league combined.

USC usually beat the rest of the league combined.

Cal75: On the other side of the coin, take a look at the “unrecinded Heisman Trophy winners at SC, All Americans on 1st n 2nd teams, NCAA championships, and overall total number of players going in the NFL draft. An analogy to the negative points you stipulated about SC would be this: The ugly girl is not always the one that boys ask out, but she can sure plant a kiss on you, give some good -the thing that sits in your shoulders, and make you get a good night’s sleep…I rest my case brother.

      2. drjess–thank you for pointing out that no one bothers to investigate Cal because ‘investigations’ are just orchestrated take downs & power plays ….and when it comes to Cal, why bother? I mean what could/would you take away from them? They don’t have anything worth taking.

      2. MG — yes, “that’s their story and they are sticking to it”. As a former DA, I am guessing that you saw that a few times…

  5. I’m sure GH yearns to know all that juicy stuff. No doubt GH holds giggly grade-school girlish gossip about what happened last year in the highest regard.

    Puh-leeze….

  6. Valid points. However I don’t see GH taking the gig without some assurances from up top that he has the ability to make changes and call the plays. And I’m sure he spoke with KK about coming on board. Overall I like it – Young and with a solid track record of making kids better. Scott if you want to worry and rant about something do that about the D and special teams and S & C, which are legitimate concerns going into spring ball.

  7. I’m sure Graham Harrell has advisers, and they probably told him not to expect too much other then tripling your salary. There’s a reason Clay Helton struggles with hiring quality people, and it’s because coaches talk to each other in their small circles. And with all do respect to Harrell, he wasn’t high on anybody’s list , that’s why he was still available after the big hiring period. The honeymoon is finally over for Helton, and anybody else who wants to pretend that USC is on the rise, because the schedule is brutal

  8. DrJess,
Take the wifeys wisdom & move to the light. CAL losses two years in a row will have SC fans jumping out of 4th story windows.

SC underdogs to all three California PAC teams.

    1. Cal75: I will respect my wife’s wisdom because she gave birth to four beautiful children. Regarding the light, the last time I checked, Cal has lost to SC a helluva lot more than SC to Cal. It appears that the win last season is making you strut around like a cocky cock at a cockfight. If SC beats the Bears in Nov. 16, I will just grin. If your precious Bears win, well I guess you can continue to be a cock (Lol)…

  9. My question, scottie, is why didn’t you ask about these things during the press conferences after the ruin and nd games? It would give legitimacy to the claim these things actually happened. Seriously, why didn’t you bring these questions up?

I’m looking forward to the incoming press conference, because I’m sure that you’ll ask about these things then. Bullshit walks

    1. Pudly —I don’t know if we can call bullshit on Scott for not attending USC pressers. It’s hard for even the most ardent of reporters to ignore “Shoot on sight!” and “Shoot to kill!” orders….

      1. Well, Micheal, it’s monday and the sun rose in the east and will probably set in the west and scottie is personna non grata on campus. But he used at least ask, now he just posts unconfirmed rumors. (Sigh..)

Oh, his friend and partner whose name rhymes with kris szwanzon posted this yesterday, rumor is he may need more help than the Trojans

  10. Cal75: No worries about me being in upper floors on Nov. 17. If I decided to jump because of a loss to Cal, I would hope that my alumni bros might be there to catch my sorry ass…And if they weren’t there because they were down at the pub, , then you wouldn’t need to worry anymore about me responding to you on this blog…

      1. MG: You are a Trojan true to heart, and I appreciate you taking care of SC buds in need of rescue (especially from the Cal Bear types…Lol).

      2. MG,

SC 28pts? On CAL? What you smokin pal? We’ll be one of the top D’s in the nation.
By the time SC gets to Berkeley, I predict the Trojans will be completely demoralized with 7 losses.
