Here’s USC athletic director Lynn Swann with two NFL greats — James Lofton and Charlie Joiner — at an autograph show in Chantilly, Va., on Saturday.
Lofton and Joiner didn’t have five of their USC teams competing on campus Saturday. Or two of their employees recently fired and charged with federal crimes. They also don’t make $3-4 million per year and then need to do an autograph show.
And . . . I’ve never heard stories of Lofton or Joiner refusing to sign autographs for free.

Lazy Lynn will milk this for as long as he can, and that may be for a long time since the new Pres has a lot of fires to put out and Lazy Lynn is well down on that list.

Swann is not at all lazy when it comes to himself.

Absolutely! After all the crap that has happened at the university, and that continues to happen, it would be terrific if somehow, someway, the Trojans pulled it together this fall. I don’t expect that to come from Helton or Pendergast. But the talent is there, and if some of the fellas on the team provide the leadership and show what is needed, and what won’t be tolerated, then maybe, just maybe.

67 —-IF this team (all the d-backs, all the o-line starters, all the receivers) stays healthy AND Helton is smart enough to stay the hell out of game planning and play calling —-the 2019 Trojans could be the surprise of this college football season.

Lynn also gets a NFL pension plus he worked for ABC for 30 years so he gets another pension for that plus the SC salary and still needs autograph money?

Karma —As luck would have it, as I was wondering to myself about what Pete Carroll would think if he returned to USC after his 10 year hiatus, my son happened to show me a passage he was reading from the Odyssey. After 10 years of wandering, Ulysses returns to his kingdom to find that a bunch of lazy pretenders have spoiled his castle and grounds and mistreated his Queen and son and loyal dog. The pretenders try to apologize but Ulysses strings his bow and his arrows start to fly anyway….

This morning’s Times print has a tell-all on the first rat, Morrie Tobin, to scurry for the ‘deal’ from the feds by dropping a dime on the Yale soccer coach who, in turn, threw it to Singer. Times article also states “…Meredith, (Yale soccer coach) who was a successful and respected coach for more than two decades at Yale, was accused of taking at least, $860,000 in bribes from Singer btwn 2015 and 2018……prosecutors said the money was for ‘multiple students.’ ”
As Dershowitz stated when this scandal broke 3 weeks ago Tuesday, this is just the tip of the iceberg.

I told you guys about it 3 weeks ago when I told you that Tobin’s daughter was a hack on my daughter’s soccer team yet she scored a spot on Yale’s soccer team as a junior. And you are right russoviet about Dershowitz’s comment that this is just a tip of the iceberg. Some of my daughter’s former soccer teammates from an elite private high school in Studio City have scored positions at elite schools (including USC) as “team managers” for the soccer team. And their names haven’t been mentioned in the papers yet. This is only the one rathole discovered. Like Chapo’s tunnels, there are more out there.

cala interestingly enough there is no mention ‘if’ Tobin’s other two older daughters were admitted through this scam as the younger one was. Is that school you’re referring to ‘Buckley’? I recall reading the point of contact at Buckley bluntly questioned how anyone from their school claims they ‘played’ soccer for Buckley inasmuch they (Buckley) had no such team. The fallback, via Heinel to that parent, was they played for a ‘Summer League’ team.

Alv —It’s one thing to, over the course of a long career, admit a couple of academically unqualified students by passing them off as preferred walk ons —–it’s something else to be conducting your own secret admission process for MANY years and MANY Hundreds of Thousands of dollars of bribes. Some people have said that athletic directors shouldn’t be charged with knowing scams like this were going on right under their noses —but the great majority of universities WEREN’T doing this. And the reason that most of the nation’s Athletic Department employees weren’t pulling something like this is they were concerned that somebody, somewhere at sometime was gonna check their work.

No I disagree – note where the phony applicants were applying – almost all were Top 25 national universities per USN&WR annual rankings. It is where these parents wanted their kids to land. That was the genesis of this scandal – parents kept asking if there wasn’t a way to get their child into (USC, UCLA, Stanford, Yale, Georgetown, etc.) Singer kept poking and sniffing around doing what thieves always do – looking for someone in a position to green light such applicants, at those very schools, who felt he/she was getting screwed salary wise and then the ‘partnership’ was presented.
Singer wasn’t fishing in public universities save the UC system. There was no interest there and i doubt they are any more stringent, prior to this mess, than the elite were.

Interesting perspective, Alv —-But I bet ya anything we’re gonna soon find out that ATTEMPTS to slip academically under qualified students into other schools were met with resistance by more serious minded underlings.

Are you saying that there are AD’s who don’t spend most of their time playing golf and actually pay attention to the workings of their departments? That’s an outrageous claim, sir, not to mention a libelous one.

If Lynn Swann is signing autographs for money, then there is no doubt he would take a cash benefit to help a more intellectually needy person get into USC.
