USC Morning Buzz: Stars In Spotlight At Scrimmage

USC seems to have gotten positive reviews from its spring showcase, whether from the media or fans. And even if it didn’t, it always has Yogi Roth as a cheerleader on the Pac-12 Network.

But a coach I spoke to Sunday said the Trojans were well aware of Saturday’s scrimmage on the network and wanted to throw more passes to Amon-Ra St. Brown at one point in order to try and get some big plays.

This is not a problem usually for JT Daniels. Even his teammates believes he favors St. Brown too much. But USC wanted to find St. Brown no matter who played quarterback.

This is interesting to me because coaches — even new offensive coordinator Graham Harrell — wanted to spotlight certain players in a fake scrimmage to look good on TV. They actually worry about these things but would deny it in public.

You know what one coach told me the best part of Saturday’s scrimmage was? Clay Helton had nothing to do with the offense Saturday. He might meddle in the fall but as far as Saturday went, Helton was not involved.

The key test will be whether Helton stays hands off when it comes time to choose a quarterback.

  1. If Helton overrules Graham, or unnecessarily interferes, I think the kid’ll bolt. He has too much pride and self respect to be a lackey.

    1. Special K —-Graham won’t need to bolt. Helton is too scared and self protective to let it get that far. All Harrell needs to do is tell Helton what he wants & stand his ground. In other words, when it comes to who’s gonna start and gameplans, Harrell needs to see any conversation with Helton that lasts more than 30 seconds as a failure.

  3. Scooter, as normal, Pittman, Vaughs, and Brown looked good. However, watch out for #87, John Jackson III. The kid looks like he could start. He runs his routes impeccably (for ruin fans, I will dumb it down for you, it means perfectly). He is also tall and fast. SC needs to get him a scholarship. I spoke to him briefly afterwards and he is very polite, smart and articulate. SC is lucky to have him.

  4. Does it matter if Gomer aka Gilligan stays out of the offense ? We’ll still have 10 guys on the field for half the kicking plays, Clancy will continue to make ZERO adjustments at halftime or anytime, the O line will still suck, and Gomer will still be in charge of wasting timeouts, what a dumpster fire this season is going to be.

    1. karma —Everything you said is 100% true. The suspense this season will come in finding out if Harrell’s offense can rise above all the shit and win anyway.
