USC Spring Practice Concludes

The final practice of the season included a physical live period. Jack Sears threw a 70-yard TD pass to Tyler Vaughns to highlight the period. As I’ve said, when USC is in real game situations (not 7-on-7, not passive 11-on-11), Sears is the best QB.

Clay Helton made the team do up-downs because Michael Pittman and an unidentified cornerback got into an altercation.

Helton said the defensive line and running backs stood out during the spring.

“I love where their mentality is at,” he said. “We’ve all got chips on our shoulder.”

The fans have a bigger chip.

  2. Listening to Coach Helton talk to us for the last time till fall, a couple things became clear. Helton has adopted Graham Harrell’s philosophy of “we don’t care what the other guy’s doing, we’re going to do our own thing.” But Helton has adopted that approach, not to what’s happening on the field, but toward the press. And that’s a good thing. He’s not trying to please everybody. He knows they’ll all turn on him if things go south, anyway. The other thing is —Helton really seems genuinely pleased that Harrell has taken over on offense (and that he can devote all his time to promoting discipline on the field and promoting the team away from the field). Anyway, I felt a lot of guilt about ripping the guy all the time and I hope things break well for him in 2019.

      2. Ha! Thank you, 67. Your line about the aloha spirit being strong enough to cure my feelings about Helton —along with McGhghy’s “removable mountains” bit —- gave me my quota of smiles for the day.

      Don’t feel bad. Helton has been the head coach for 3+ years. His job as a head coach is to instill discipline, not care what people write, and get the team ready through his assistants. Helton let the players dictate. Maybe he has learned he has to. We will see

  3. Scott,
    Not sure why you care so much but Sears has had the 3rd or 4th best spring camp according to almost every beat writer. The good news is all QB’s played pretty well, which is a great sign. Last spring Fink and Sears were terrible.

  5. After the fight, Helton made the entire team do up and downs or burpees. Then he yelled at them about discipline. My question is, where has this been? Why didn’t he st the the tone for spring practice at the first practice? He should have been doing this every practice. Or was this just for show?

    Talked to a player and we discussed discipline and as a upperclassman he needs to help keep discipline. He agreed

    1. Good comments, pt. I listened to Gerard Martinez give his impressions on Keely Eure’s show and it’s clear that Drevno’s unit (the so called O-Line) is holding the offense back. I know Helton likes Drevno but the o-line doesn’t seem to play hard for the guy (this, btw, seems to be pretty much the consensus opinion of everybody who’s been watching this spring).

      Not bad. However, God is a Trojan. Since ruins are a secular school, unlike USC where there start was with the Wesleyan Church, Sc with God’s approval will smite Thug U aka ruinville just like he did with the Egyptians when Moses was crossing the Red Sea.
