USC Morning Buzz: Monday Notes

Former USC water polo coach Jovan Vavic has sold his in Palos Verdes. Vavic listed the home for $2.49 million. The USC women’s water polo team defeated Stanford, 9-8, in triple overtime Sunday to win the MPSF championship.

  • Lynn Swann was actually at Cromwell Field on Sunday for the annual USC-UCLA dual meet.
  • USC and UCLA split the annuel dual meet in track and field. The USC women won, 90-69, while the UCLA men won, 102-60. The USC women are ranked No. 4 in the nation after winning the NCAA title last season. The men’s result yesterday was not surprising but also not good.
  • There is a segment of USC football fans on the Internet who know nothing about track and field but blindly praise coach Caryl Smith-Gilbert because of last year’s dramatic victory in the NCAA’s. There’s been so much emphasis in one group (sprints) that some other areas have regressed and one reason the men are down is because they didn’t luckily get an All-American from UCLA to transfer like last year when 400-meter hurdler Rai Benjamin transferred to USC for one season and won the 400-meter hurdles at the NCAA finals.
  • USC band director Art Bartner conducted his final spring concert Sunday night at Bovard Auditorium. But his retirement is still a ways off. He will direct the band this fall at footbal games and a 50th anniversary gala for him will be held on May 2, 2020 at USC.
  • John Singleton, who graduated from the USC Cinema School in 1990, remains in a coma after suffering a “major stroke.” Singleton directed the films, “Boyz n the Hood” and “2 Fast 2 Furious.”

UPDATED: Singleton’s family announced today he would be taken off life support.

  1. USC fails to field a cross country team that isn’t a joke, they could bolster their distance squads for track by actually caring about the XC team, but that will cost money sooooo…………….

  2. Mr. Singleton,

Prayers are sent for you. Get better.

Now I know why the recruit in the Boys in the Hood movie had a recruit going to USC. Smart man.

    1. I agree with you in your prayers, PT….Further, I call upon Trojan Nation to pray protection upon all USC’s assets, particularly the Coliseum, the Toyota Soccer Stadium and all recently, or soon to be finished projects past, present or future. The Coliseum has weighed heavily upon me, since the planning stages of the renovation…so much so that I wrote, a few years back, during planning stages, to many USC leaders, like Max Nikias, Lynn Swann, Donna Heinel and Steve Lopes’ USC emails to express security concerns. None responded to me. I also shared this letter with Ryan Abraham on his email and he responded very professionally…..Anyway, what’s done is done. I share with you all today because we can overcome in prayer agreements to our Creator…please consider, even if you don’t believe..,.do it for the people….
