USC Sunday Buzz: More On Recruiting Trend

Right now, 11 of the top 23 prospects in Rivals’s best 100 list have committed to out-of-state schools.

Rivals analyst Mike Farrell was asked if social media played a role?

“Is it the reason so many kids are leaving the state now? I don’t think so, not for 2020, because there are other circumstances like USC recruiting horribly and teams like LSU stepping up their out of state recruiting.”

Farrell said social media and camps do play a role but it is interesting a national analyst is already using the word “horribly” to describe USC recruiting.

You can still find analysts who will say it’s early or they are not worried about USC’s class but some are starting to speak out.

  1. I’ve been a fan since 1974. While at USC, we had 2 championships.
Several not so great years but Pete Carroll turned it around.
If USC has a bad 10-20 season, a new coach can turn it around.
    Optimistic!!!

  2. Yes, with the right administrative leadership, SC is still one of the top jobs in the country for many sports, and can attract the best coaching talent. It can be turned around quickly.

    1. History is not on your side. It hasn’t been easy getting coaches to come here…Pete’s own hiring and the preceding search were proof of that.

      1. A lot of truth to that….if not for Daryl Gross convincing clueless Garrett to hire PC – who knows? It’s also the same at any top tier program….not easy to achieve success when the expectations are already. You really think AL is going to do as they have when sabin leaves? I don’t and the alums there know it even more i.e. long time between bear Bryant and Sabin nearly 35 years.

Pete Carroll enjoyed the challenge…Kiffin thought he was ready…Helton is a disaster by any measurement….Meyers would succeed very well at USC because he is driven to do that.

Daryl Gross should be our athletic director

      2. Well honestly as good as he turned out, it was a shot in the dark. Nothing on his resume indicated his ability to do what he did. When we played Auburn his second year, few gave us a chance.

      3. Pudly, yes, the history is a tough one. My view is that with the right leadership (a professional AD, as opposed to Garrett, Haden, Swann), and given the So Cal location, and with the right compensation, that we could attract top talent. One reason is that California produces a ton of football talent, many of whom would be likely to remain on the west coast and play for a top program. Problem is that right now, there really isn’t that top program…

      4. Not disputing that part ‘67, but consider the economics of living in LA, lifestyle (hrs spent in traffic), lack of college town media, etc and it just isn’t that appealing to most. Then add in the Social Media and can expectations and you’ve eliminated most coaches.
You think urban would’ve gotten away with Zach Smith’s wife beating in LA?? The cops would’ve hauled smith off instantaneously not like Gainesville or Columbus. You just don’t get that kind of control here.

      5. Yes, the social media/hollywood factor is an important issue that is not nearly as visible in other towns, particularly those in the south.

Let’s see what happens in Columbus now that OSU is facing its own sh*tstorm from their own team doc’s abuses.

A lot of this is going to boil down to Folt’s preferences. Will she want to build on the tradition of SC athletics? Or go the ruin route?

I still keep thinking that one nationally prominent program would clean up in terms of recruiting, and that would be a huge draw for the right coach.

  3. Recruiting is no longer the same as it used to be. The whole thing has changed. Kids go where they can win big, and it will fluctuate from year to year. It’s part of the new AAU / 7 on 7 / club sports culture. Kids are used to jumping on winning teams from season to season or even week to week. Coaches at that level no longer develop, they just grab the best kids they can and spend all of their time playing tournaments. Tradition doesn’t mean as much, current status does. Social media plays a ridiculously huge part in it. It is ego driven craziness.

    1. You left out “shiny things”…like the oregon swag w/ all the uni combos. Realistically the ducks haven’t done much the last three yrs except show shiny helmets. They finished 4th in the north division. Not much substance…

  4. Interesting. Scott said, “You can still find analysts who will say it’s early or they are not worried about USC’s class”, but doesn’t quote any of them.

      1. That’s true but the dearth of decent 5 stars willing or eager to come to USC is telling. These kids all, rightfully, conclude playing for USC and getting picked for the NFL is no longer probable…..it all traces directly back to the reason for the implosion – Clay Helton

      2. Alv, using the 2015 class as an example for the draft, so far 7 have been drafted with 4 still in school. Of those 4 I’d speculate that Houston and Rector have good chances of each being drafted. That would raise the total to 9 from this class (including first – second – third 2 – fourth and fifth). Considering 2 of our better kids in this class washed out (Osa and Jefferson who both would probably be 1-3 rd picks), this class wasn’t bad. Saying this, it’s not as an argument with your point, is rather to provide perspective.

  5. USC is basically leaving the house without shutting the garage door and Ed Orgeron see’s that and is taking advantage of it because he’s not a softy and has some back bone. Helton/Swann are leaving the house with the neighborhood ready at all times to take anything we need. We only can blame ourselves. Ourselves being Lynn Swann/Clay Helton/& Clancy Pendergast.
    Don’t forget that dork Clancy.

  6. Based on the reputation, and tradition of USC football, the recruiting is horrible. But according to the unqualified dumb ass, athletic director, Lynn Swann…., “the football program is in great shape”… lmao 😂
