USC is making a lot of excuses for why it has to play UC Davis in 2021 and break its streak of never playing an FCS team.
It says things like FBS schools want too much money. But it is also true that it has been somewhat lazy in the way it tries to schedule non-conference teams the past 15 years.
Here’s an example: USC could have called UMass, an independent school, which has an opening on Sept. 4, 2021, the date of the UC Davis game. UMass currently has only 10 games scheduled in 2021.
An athletic dept. official told me he was unaware of any attempts to contact UMass. Of course not. UMass is 3,000 miles away. It is not in California like UC Davis.
The lazy and convenient thing was to simply call UC Davis. And then say the fans don’t understand how hard it is to schedule opponents. The fans never understand, according to this administration.
The fans don’t understand why season-ticket prices must increase or seats must move. The fans don’t understand why Clay Helton was brought back. They don’t understand why Salute to Troy must be canceled.
It’s an endless cycle.
