USC Morning Buzz: It’s Too Hard To Schedule Games!

USC is making a lot of excuses for why it has to play UC Davis in 2021 and break its streak of never playing an FCS team.

It says things like FBS schools want too much money. But it is also true that it has been somewhat lazy in the way it tries to schedule non-conference teams the past 15 years.

Here’s an example: USC could have called UMass, an independent school, which has an opening on Sept. 4, 2021, the date of the UC Davis game. UMass currently has only 10 games scheduled in 2021.

An athletic dept. official told me he was unaware of any attempts to contact UMass. Of course not. UMass is 3,000 miles away. It is not in California like UC Davis.

The lazy and convenient thing was to simply call UC Davis. And then say the fans don’t understand how hard it is to schedule opponents. The fans never understand, according to this administration.

The fans don’t understand why season-ticket prices must increase or seats must move. The fans don’t understand why Clay Helton was brought back. They don’t understand why Salute to Troy must be canceled.

It’s an endless cycle.

  1. SC administration won’t understand why people are not renewing their tickets because they have their head up someplace where the sun does not shine. They are idiots, morons, clueless dolts. They make the Key Stone Cops look better.

  2. Nothing is understandable after a 5-7 season.
    Every sensory input wildly incomprehensible.
Everybody looks suspicious, malicious, their very existence terribly ill conceived.

All a blogger has to do throw a daily tiny shovelful of coal onto the insecurity fire and watch it roar.

      2. Who is the counterpart to Scott Wolf for the Gutties?

Answer = Every sane college football fan.

Talk about spontaneous implosion, now THAT a my friends is a football black hole. They’ll routinely draw less than 30k to the Hose Bowl this season.

  3. Of all the football traditions one could break, this one is pretty far down the list.

And UMass is probably a bigger patsy than UC Davis. UMass gave up 58 points to Ohio. That is Ohio University, not Ohio State.

      1. The 2002 Trojan team played 9 ranked teams. 9!!

Hard to believe that it was not that long ago that the Pac 10 was a strong conference. Not anymore.

      2. Ha! [gt—Given where we are today as a football team, that actually is a very tough question]….

  4. Just looking at the schedule for USC in distant past and thinking what’s the big deal? The USC Trojans played teams twice in the same season, they have played teams that were basically a mix of college and high school kids and they played Ucla. How low do you want me to go? In the end it is just another football game. Experience tells me there is nothing wrong with playing a team that wants to play you. And when did it become lazy to schedule a team that is close? If USC called UMASS they would have to cover a cross country flight and housing.
I understand paying more for some things, but the coliseum renovations were paid for by fund raising. I do not feel the need to pay more for an inferior product and a 5&7 team is not the hot ticket in LA. If USC is not careful they will be handing out coupons for tickets at Vons at a heavily discounted price. When my family went to the Arizona game last season the people in the stands around us were from group homes. They had free tickets and vouchers for two beers. The section was full until the beer was gone. USC might be headed down the same path if things don’t change soon.

    1. Coliseum vendors have been told —that for 2019— the limit is “all somebody can drink.”

Does this apply to when you drink too much or when watching USC football becomes unbearable?

  5. It’s pathetic that USC is scheduling down, knowing full well they have a second rate football coach that isn’t worth a shit, who finished (4-5) in conference and 5-7 overall.

It’s a Gawd Damn shame and embarrassment how USC has provides Clay Helton the #1 ranked recruiting class in the PAC 12 every year since he’s been coaching at USC and Helton just continues to waste talent.

And most of USC’s recruiting classes up until this year have been Top 5 in the country…there’s no excuse for that idiot Clay Helton to have the Trojans finishing with more than 2 losses any given year, the talent is there, the coaching is crap!

    1. I’m not just being snarky in the following observation: Deep down, Helton isn’t interested in giving out coaching to the players…..
