Morning Buzz: Utah Picked To Win Pac-12!

There was upset in the Pac-12 media poll just released: Utah was picked to win the Pac-12.

In a narrow race, the Utes received 12 votes while Oregon received 11 and Washington 9.

The Pac-12 South race was not nearly so close. Utah trounced USC with 33 votes to 2 votes.

So USC is picked to finish second, as expected. Full results below:

The media has correctly selected the Conference Champion in 31 of 58 previous polls, but only four times in the last 12 polls. Following are the results of the preseason media poll (points 6-5-4-3-2-1, first-place votes in parentheses):

PAC-12 TITLE GAME CHAMPION: Utah (12 votes)
Others receiving votes: Oregon (11), Washington (9), USC (2), Washington State (1)

And that is not all. The Pac-12 also has its first preseason all-conference team, which I don’t really care about.

LOS ANGELES – The preseason All-Pac-12 team, as selected by the media who cover Pac-12 football, has been announced. Representation on the first team is nearly split evenly between the North Division (13) and South Division (12). UTAH leads the way with five players on first team, followed by OREGON and STANFORD with four players each. The selections on offense were paced by COLORADO wide receiver Laviska Shenault Jr., who was a unanimous first team pick on all 33 ballots, and OREGON quarterback Justin Herbert, who received first team nod on 31 of 33 ballots. On the defensive side, STANFORD defensive back Paulson Adebogarnered first team votes on all but one ballot.

  1. In the old days, Sc would be dominent in the ol and rb category. Now, no one is there. If SC starts Sears, they beat most teams in the PAC 12. They might have a slip up but they would be in the game. With Daniels, it is a 30-70 chance that SC is even in the game. I thought Vaughns should have been in the wr selection.

  2. Personally, I LOVE it when SC is ranked low or in this case unranked. It gets real old watching year after year of SC being ranked high nationally or picked to win the Pac 12 (10) only to underperform. Our guys love to read their press clipping so instead of puffing their chests with great reviews I hope they get pissed off at all the negative predictions, manifesting their anger in extra weight room work / practice /perseverance / determination. Zero offensive linemen and zero RBs on the list…Get mad, get big, get going! While not the best team ever assembled, there is more than enough talent at SC to win a weak Pac12. Pin your ears back boys and get after it! Fight On! -Z

  3. So in actual placement we are picked to finish 4th in the Pac12 right?
That would most likely be an 8-4 season and a bowl game we don’t care to get excited for right?
But in 2019……We’re still 93 million miles away from the sun on planet Earth. Or Planet USC.
Lynn Swann lives there and seems to believe it’s still on top with nothing to worry about after a losing season (that’s being polite) and not really saying too much except he seriously believes Helton can win a Championship. A season where we win more games but ultimately see not much of a change.
    Forget what “PLANET USC” BELIEVES.
THE PEOPLE ON THIS BLOG. I ASK YOU……DOES THAT KEEP CLAY HELTON AT USC????????????
    My analysis- F*** NO!

    1. 8-4, Sam? i think it depends on the nature of those losses: Getting blown out, not making halftime adjustments, not starting players deserving to start, or just getting blatantly out-coached would be suffice for his stepping down.
Significant improvements in these areas and some close losses and Helton should still be fired. Open the bank, hire Meyer, thanks for nothing Clay Helton.

  4. Wait…. wasn’t Clay Helton handed the keys to an elite program, that had enough talent to go to back to back major bowl games ? That stupid Dumb Fuck has set the USC program backwards, even after a decade of signing top 10 recruiting classes . You really have to be an imbecile to accomplish something like that, especially if the institution is USC 😂

  5. Palaie Gaoteote will be 1st Team All Pac-12.
Drake Jackson will be Pac-12 Freshman Defensive Player Of The Year.

Both of them will play at a high level and NO thanks to Clancy Pendergast.

    1. It WAS a little different in 2005, karma:
Offense: Matt Leinart, Lendale White, Steve Smith, Fred Matua, Winston Justice, Dwayne Jarett, Jeff Byers, Sam Baker, Ryan Kalil, Reggie Bush

Defense: Lawrence Jackson, Darnell Bing, Scott Ware, Keith Rivers, Justin Wyatt, Dallas Sartz, Frostee Rucker, Eric Wright, Jeff Schweiger

Special Teams: Tom Malone, Reggie Bush

  6. And Utah is picked to finish ahead of the Trojans? That’s fucking laughable!

Clay Helton is absolute garbage just wasting talent!
