If you listened to the podcast I did Monday, you heard me say Clay Helton wants to play backup QB Kedon Slovis on Saturday against Fresno State.
He even has a planned series for Slovis. Naturally, Helton can change that depending on how the game unfolds but playing Slovis is not unprecedented for Helton.
Remember, he went into the Alabama game intending to give Sam Darnold playing time even though Max Browne started.
Getting Slovis into the game gives him some experience. Again, would Helton have done it if Matt Fink or Jack Sears was the backup?
Sort of like the “touchdown after sack” he awarded JT Daniels at the Coliseum scrimmage.
- You will see a lot of teams this season wear a commemorative patch on their jerseys for the 150th anniversary of college football. But USC (Clay Helton) has elected to wear the helmet sticker instead.
It’s hardly noticeable compared to the Pac-12 logo and I’d have gone with the patch.
USC went all out in 1969 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of college football with a large helmet decal.

- USC has named its team captains: Michael Pittman, Jordan Iosefa, Christian Rector and John Houston.
- Helton said linebacker Abdul-Malik McClain will be out several weeks following knee surgery.
Flow, be serious, if USC had gone with the patch you’d just bitch about how ugly it is by ruining the traditional USC jersey (which I would shockingly agree with). Sticker? Patch? Patch? Sticker? You’d find something wrong with it either way. What are other traditional powers choosing?

Yeah, and JT will suck even if he wins a title and Heisman…he’ll say, “Just think what Sears could of done!” Sears is not even close to being a USC QB, but Flow will never back down from the narrative he’s trying to press.

Man bel-air tech has a lot of frosh players ‘but’ they are also making a lot of penalties (illegal procedures, personal fouls after the whistle, a 12th player can’t get off the field before the ball is snapped) in their game against Cin.. Fairness may be 1st game jitters but they are having a tough night but a great defensive pick defending their 2 yd line with a return to CIN’s 34 yd line and then boom – personal foul and another one after the last play to end the half.

Always nice to see UCLA lose their opener and look like shit doing it. We will see how we do on Saturday.

I don’t know about slovis but Fucla looks like the chocolate factory in the first half against Cincin.

Helton giving Slovis a series is probably meant to keep the peace with Harrell, who ranks Slovis over Daniels.

Well, Helton had to kick Sears butt to the scout team to get him to hop into the transfer portal before the team chose team captains. Helton could not allow Sears to be picked a captain and having a quiet Caine Mutiny on the team. Let’s face it, last year the players gave up once Daniels was announced as the starting QB over Sears. That killed morale. But purportedly Helton had promised Daniels dad he would start as a condition of him coming to USC (“my hands are tied”). Helton was clutching at straws to find another Darnold to make him look good despite the atrocious nepotism and good old boy coaching and coach selections. But Helton is in a pickle of his own making. If SC goes, say, 0-6 or 1-5 to start the season how does he stick with Daniels? His only real option would be to bring in Fink but that ain’t gonna happen because another freshman, Slovis, is being given the job as another entitlement. Another throw-away season?

The trolls are quiet tonight. Must be busy watching their real team get beat. Flow, anything to report? “Thanks, Kelly!”

I would like to suggest that EVERYBODY from Inside USC go to the JoeBruin site and express really lame condolences for the bruins’ ignominious, season destroying loss (I think that would be the best….and most hurtful way of putting it). Be sure to reference every penalty, all the breaks they got from the officials and all Chip’s really dumb play calling —-and then (really insincerely) say that UCLA should have won but for their quarterback losing his grip on the football & rolling it to the other team w/o being hit….and close with a few words on how, if they continue to improve at practice over the next 2 weeks, they’ll easily beat Oklahoma on September 14th.

Still not one, ONE, comment by the trolls…PJM, Tebow and his many aliases (Buddha). That should clear a lot of things up. They’re busy drowning their ucla sorrows with Owns who’s back on the sauce.

Michael, according to owns, Oklahoma will be held to under 20 points. This is not a typo.

Kindly quote my excuse(s) for UCLA’s hideous defeat.
I bet you hit on the old lady tonight……good luck with that.

Owns — Truthfully, I would be happy (not for myself, but for you) if UCLA actually rose up and beat Oklahoma. It’s gonna be hard, though…

That Chip Kelly really is an offensive genius…218 yards of total offense against Cincinnati.
He is worth every penny of that $24 million contract.

And to think I waited months for this UCLA launch fiasco! This defeat is worse than last years Bearcat loss.
I stand before the rah-rahs and pimps, hat in hand, appalled and humiliated by the ugly Bruin Bearcat defeat. The ‘cats were clearly the better-conditioned, the better-prepared team with a better offense/defense and QB.
IMHO, the best thing about the UCLA game was the Skittle Commerical.
I make no excuses for the feeble Bruin loss; they SUCCED big time, especially at QB.
Were I CK, I would immediately invite DTR to enter the “prortal,” and turn the team over to Chase Griffin.

owns, why are you surprised? This was entirely predictable.
ucla football is like groundhog day. Whether the coach is Dorrel, Mora, Neuheisel, Kelly, it doesn’t matter.
It is the same thing, every year, year after year.
You predicted ucla will hold Oklahoma under 20 points. Are you sticking with that?

Not so predictable that you ’67 predicted it.
For the time being, yes,

owns, every betting line had ucla losing. No secret about the outcome.
What was a surprise is just how awful Chip Kelly is as a head coach. Not mediocre. Just awful.
And as I have written a dozen times on this blog,

Manning up – to be respected (and everyone else here should be prepared to follow suit)…
All fun aside – actually seemed to be some takeaways to build on…defense did not take the opportunity to collapse…there were opportunities in the passing game…your lines did not get overwhelmed…you get your RB back healthy…opener on the road…
I can only hope for a relatively comparable list after Fresno State

Bruin fans will be able to take heart in our insincerity and we might save some lives…

MG, I invite the rah-rah’s and pimps to inundate Joe Bruin with as much Bruin defeat invective as they can muster. Just remind them to try and use complete, NO ALL CAP, sentences.
No need to shout ’cause 15 to 20% of Bruin fans want CK impeached.

Do you wanna know why I’m not making a Ucla joke? Because I’m afraid I’ll be writing the same type of post Sunday morning after Fresno shows Helton the door.
Do you know why Helton opted to wear a helmet sticker instead of a patch? Because he was afraid the special teams players would confuse the patch with their jersey number. They’d be standing on the sidelines going, ” no coach you didn’t call my number I’m one fitty. “

Whoa you are giving the special teams coach a lot of credit. According to Scott the coach can’t count to eleven without dropping his pants and his players are all, “lookit dat coach gots three thumbs.”
I too believe we will be writing about the sick feeling we have after the game. The sad thing is it would be prevented and everyone except Swann can see it coming. This will either be Swann’s legacy and will probably lead to more CTE studies.

Looking at our four captains only M. Pittman could even start on a Clemson, Georgia or Alabama team. A couple would be 3rd or 4th string. This is the House that Gomer Built.
