Reggie Bush Was Not A Victim

I get that a lot of USC fans want Reggie Bush back on campus and I fully expect the university to allow him back in 2020.

But I don’t get why they say “he didn’t take any money” or “his parents took all the money.”

Let me just point to a Bush quote from last year: “The guy who I took money from was my boy. I had known him for 8 years.”

When I say Bush should apologize, I mean for stonewalling the NCAA, which hurt USC’s case. For not simply paying Lloyd Lake back the $300,000, which would have prevented all of this from happening. Todd McNair probably doesn’t spend 10 years in exile if Bush spoke to the NCAA either. And to the athletes who suffered from the NCAA sanctions.

Did the NCAA go overboard? Of course. I’ve written that many, many times.

Did they let other schools off the hook who did far worse? Yes.

But if we focus on Bush, his actions were not honorable. So a small apology seems reasonable.

  1. An apology would be appropriate only after Bush nose pushed a peanut from LA to NYC and back.

Bush selfishly sold out Clown U for stinking, illegal cash!!! I have no truck against Bush helping his parents financially, but not moving them up to Eastside.

    1. I don’t get any chuckles very often on these sports’ blogs, but justowns, of all the impoverished humorous posters, finally scored. “Pushing a peanut from LA to NYC and back” got me. I owe you one! I will try hard to reciprocate, but it may take time.

Maybe UCLA or the children of Wooden and Sam roll some of those National Championships back to the NCAA offices.

They’ll be able to sleep better.

      1. BS Sammy, the NYDAC rescinded Bush’s HT election and St. Pat sent the Trophy back UPS ground. Reggie Bull Shit had nothing to do with it.

Sammy, If the shoe were on the other foot, you’d defend the bozo 10 NC’s like Clown U’s, cheesy, voted FB NC’s.

SUCCX is the second most sanctioned Div 1 University Athletic program.

Glad to have Reggie back where he belongs who gives a F what the NCAA says

  3. Fuck this stings. And twice in a month. But Flow’s got some solid points. A Bush apology would go a long way and show some professionalism, as well as some owning-up, no matter how small his part was. But the bigger picture in all this? One man’s name: Paul Dee. Rest in hell, fucker.

  4. First Reggie Bush should apologize to all the USC players like Cody Kessler and Matt Barkley and coaches who had their football seasons ruined by Reggie’s Greed. Then he should apologize to the Trojan Nation for destroying the USC Football Dynasty. Then he should donate his $300,000 in agent payoff money to the university for all the harm he has done. The codependents who enable the sociopath Reggie and want to embrace him with open arms should be ashamed of themselves.

    1. I agree (the only thing I wonder about, gt —– have Reggie’s lawyers told him to stay away from acknowledging any misdeeds)?

  5. Okay Reggie what Reggie said is what the NCAA rules allowed. Athletes are allowed to accept money from family and close family friends. The rules do not have a caveat. My daughter studied the Bush case for a college English class paper. She found that Bush did the necessary paperwork and it was approved. The money came from a close family friend and was within the rules. He was well out of school when the NCAA attack a private citizen.
I am not saying he’s squeaky clean but unless you can prove what he did enhanced his ability, his accomplishment on the field had a profound effect in the sport.
The person who should be criticized for booting the Bush case was the AD at the time.

    1. And that’s just it: The biggest argument of the Bush Scandal. Did anything off the field that was the entire mess help him in any way on the field? Not in the slightest.

    2. Funny how 84 of the 85 Trojan student athletes on the 2004 national champs had no problem following the rules that are plain to read in every SC football program, but Reggie Bush couldn’t wait one more year to become a multimillionaire. He decided the rules didn’t apply to him, took the $300,000 in goodies and a free house. Then he had the unmitigated gall to stiff the sports agents so they went public. And now Rialto’s daughter writes papers rationalizing his deceit, selfishness and greed! Better have her read this and rewrite her paper.http://www.ncaa.org/enforcement/role-boosters

  6. For all of you who think Reggie was the only athlete/family to take money, you’re deluding yourselves. You should check out the book written by sports agent Josh Luchs about all the USC and UCLA players who took money.

That doesn’t excuse Reggie or his family. They were just playing the game as it went on in L.A. at the time.

    1. Funny how all the other parents of Trojan student athletes on the 2004 football team weren’t living in free houses in San Diego and having their trips to away games and the Heisman ceremony paid for. Reggie Bush thinks he is bigger than the rules and he has learned absolutely nothing in the 15 years since he knowingly took the money from two sports agents and destroyed the USC Football Dynasty.

      1. It’s not about what happened on one team or with one singular player.

Reggie just happened to get caught. And I don’t think the NCAA chased Carroll out as I think Carroll would have left for the NFL anyways.

And as the other cases showed, other schools had problems with players and extra benefits. It was the NCAA with their arbitrary punishment that exacerbated a problem. I think it’s telling that they ended up changing their own rule about player disassociations.

You say Reggie thinks he is bigger than the rules but I say the rules you’re referring to (NCAA bylaws) is the problem, not the player.

    1. Quote from Bill Walton:

““If the UCLA basketball teams of the late 1960s and early 1970s were subjected to the kind of scrutiny (other schools) have been, UCLA would probably have to forfeit about eight national championships and be on probation for the next 100 years.”

      Sounds about right.

  7. From the beginning, Pat Haden should have fought the hollow NCAA sanctions in court. Only reason USC was pursued so vigorously by NCAA was the size of the media market in Los Angeles and our obvious institutional football success. Instead, Pat bent over and took it like a dog. I guess he forgot to channel the words to our fight song…

Oh sure, St. Pat had the authority to start a major lawsuit vs the NCAA on his own volition w/o a bye your leave from Nicky Squid and the sacred bozo BOT.

  9. Bush shoulda, woulda, coulda! USC cannot control what Reggie does or should have done. The fact is USC was not complicit and should have received no where near as severe of penalties. It was like the Democrat party and Trump. They are impeaching and looking for justification. All of this wouldn’t even be talked about if the NCAA had penalized what Reggie and his parent did instead of trying to destroy USC who did not benefit one iota from what the Bush’s did. Why demonize Reggie Bush? He is a kid who made a bad mistake. The NCAA is the only demon here. Their mission was to destroy a football program. They found a situation that enabled them to press their agenda.
