Source: USC Pursues Big Names To Replace Clay Helton

My job is to tell you everything I hear.

This came from a high-ranking administation source.

USC has supposedly given Clay Helton until Thursday to find another job, such as at UNLV.

USC has already spoken to Bob Stoops and is making a hard push at Urban Meyer. Those are the top 2 choices.

The delay in an announcement is because it wanted to give Helton some time and had not wrapped up Stoops or Meyer.

Now I’m not saying this is 100 percent what will happen because I do not have a crystal ball. I’m just telling you what a source who has a pretty high position at USC told me.

    1. Helton’s buyout likely is reduced $ for $ if he takes another job. I wonder if this idea is Helton’s or the SC admin?

Seems odd – if you fire a guy in the coaching business, then you fire him. Anybody ever heard of this type of arrangement at a D1 school before?

      1. Why would he leave $10M on the table to resign and take another job. Why not get canned and look after that? Don’t know the specifics of his contract but him quitting doesn’t make sense. Even Helton is smarter than that.

    2. Why is Helton still recruiting? Probably because it’s some kind of NCAA violation and he wants to leave USC one more thing to remember him by.

    4. Either way–retained or fired–Gentleman Clay would go out and represent USC professionally, including on the recruiting trail. It’s how you do things at that level. OFF THE FOOTBALL FIELD, he’s represented the School well.

Most 3 star recruits would snap up a USC offer–great education and maybe a chance to play for the Cardinal and Gold. They also know that if a coaching change occurs BEFORE NLI signing day, they can flip to #2.

  1. Given this sounds like the best possible solution for everyone, Helton included, being that if this is true USC is trying to let him “gracefully” move on. But, it’s Flow here. So, I’ll believe when it’s all official.

  3. That’s pretty interesting info. But I suspect the administration is just testing to find the leaker!

So they’re giving Helton a chance to find another job first? Makes perfect sense to me. It would likely save USC a ton of dough since he resigned instead of being fired. That would be a very dumb move on Gomer’s part!

  4. Meaning he gets fired on Thursday regardless of where we’re at with the hiring of a new coach? That doesn’t make sense. No way ever he quits, not with that contract and payout. Talking to Stoops and UM makes sense…shouldn’t those conversations have already occurred?

  6. I don’t believe it…Helton is supposed to be out looking for a job while he’s recruiting for USC? Scott, as much as I wish it were true, I think you’ve been punk’d….
Especially now that USC’s recruiting class has risen to #67 on 247 sports, and 70th on Rivals….
Bohn and Folt cannot turn their backs on CH now that they’ve seen what another 3 Star OL can do for SC’s recruiting rankings…sure, Rivals didn’t even have the guy ranked, but, hey….
I’m beginning to think that the announcement of Helton’s return will be made on Friday night during the Pac 12 Championship game, or on Saturday during all of the conference championship games….by, then, we’ll all be apathetic and sick of the—Intrigue–and Griese and Herby will congratulate the new dance team at SC for staying the course…

  7. The only possible way this makes sense is an immediate payout that is less then the value of the the remainder of his contract ($6MM?) and allowance to coach somewhere else. Getting the lump sum and then signing with another school for at or near his present salary would make financial sense. But going to UNLV from USC is a big, big step down. If I’m the agent of CH, I’m calling Washington and FSU.

  8. It’s a money issue.

I heard a similar thing about encouraging Helton to find another job (but UNLV was not named).

This is because USC wants to save the buyout money. They don’t want to fire Helton or else they’ll be on the hook for the full amount. If Helton leaves voluntarily then USC doesn’t have to pay it.

But, it wouldn’t surprise me if Helton does take another HC job but USC quietly pays Helton his buyout, say maybe half of whatever it is.

  9. 67..in the old days, a coach would get full, immediate payout, regardless of when and where they got the next coaching assignment. Now, the offset (dollar for dollar) is in place and there is no one-time payout–the coach stays on the school’s payroll and gets paid every two weeks. What SW is proposing just doesn’t make sense to me. Possible that Bohn agreed to a partial one-time payment to CH is he got another job quickly but that would be a first. Although, setting a Thursday deadline for a new job is unrealistic…how does he find a job in less then a week? Perhaps this offer was in place right after the UCLA game?

  11. Sounds promising, except for one thing: Giving Helton until Thursday to find another job is suspicious. First, with his buyout he could take as long as he wants to find another position. Second, if Helton was given until Thursday to pursue another coaching position, why would he continue recruiting during this important period. Shouldn’t he be having discussions with other football programs. Finally, when a person is terminated, especially senior-level employees, they get an exit package and get escorted out the door just as Steve Sarkisian, Lynn Swann and Lane Kiffin were. Again, the idea that CH has a extraordinarily short grace period to find another job is ludicrous.

  12. I’m not buying any of this story, because UNLV has their eyes set on Oregon’s offensive coordinator, Marcus Arroyo . And why would Clay Helton be in any hurry to find a job, he has $15 plus million reasons to take time off , and be selective next year. Although I doubt if any athletic director will be knocking on his door, because he had all the resources in the world at USC for four years, and accomplished—> NOTHING!!! with the team he put together

  13. Yea, FB. In CFB, substandard coaches are like financial markets. They’re self-correcting. For example, Kiffin became an assistant after his head coaching stint at SC, then he landed a HC job at FAU, a non-Power 5 institution. Sarkisian’s career and many other subpar HCs have followed a similar trajectory. If CH gets a head coaching job it will more than likely be at a non-Power 5 school, but chances are he will be an assistant somewhere.

    1. Yes, it would be a money grab, but Stoops would hire good coordinators, the team would be disciplined, and the best players would be on the field.

I’d prefer Matt Rhule to Stoops. Took Baylor from 1-11 to 11-1 in 2 years.

Meyer is their top choice, but they are in talks with other coaches in case Meyer declines.

    1. Who? All the people that benefit from Helton staying are the ones who leak this stuff to reporters and apparently random bloggers. There’s a whole bunch of people who are going to have the little fiefdoms they’ve carved out over the last 10 years snatched away from them if a powerful coach is brought in. It’s a survival strategy. If they were going to keep him they’d have said they were keeping him when this whole thing started.

Just for fun……if the contract allows USC to subtract any salary earned by Helton at another school from his buyout……..if the buyout is so small that Helton feels he still needs to work……if the buyout was reduced on a date certain……..if USC admin has been given the ok by the BOT to open the checkbook for a new staff……..
    This all makes sense.

    1. Helton is garbage, but the recruiting ranking is so low because they only have 12 available scholarships and are almost exclusively targeting lineman & DBs. Lineman & DBs are sexy like skill position players. Don’t forget they’ve got another 5 star WR in McCoy who as redshirt freshman becomes eligible next year.

  17. “Members of the team were informed Tuesday by administration that Helton would be returning but to expect changes to the coaching staff.”

Sounds bizarre – they are going into a bowl game, and the players are being told that at least some of the coaching staff will be fired?

In any case, they tried this exact strategy this year. Didn’t work. Without Slovis, it would have been a 6-6 year.
