Sunday Buzz: A John Wayne-USC Story

You probably heard Saturday about an effort to rename John Wayne Airport in Orange County.

That prompted an ex-USC player, who is African American, to call me late Saturday and recount a story from 1973 when Wayne toured the campus.

“We took a picture together and the photographer told John Wayne to pull his cap back because there was a shadow on his forehead,” said the player, who did not wish to be identified. “So Wayne said, `Well, look at him, he’s got a big shadow on his face.’

“I wanted to say something to Wayne but I didn’t.”

Just as a reminder, I’ve also reported positive stories about Wayne and USC here, here and here.

  1. Damn that sucks.
For the player to have to take that kind of racism and keep a calm temperature is tough and I tip my cap to anyone who has had similar experiences.
John Wayne is my dad’s favorite actor as he is to many people but I don’t know if my dad wants to hear this.

I’m sure you agree all racist Democrats like Wilson, FDR, Al Bore Sr, Robert KKK Byrd, Maxine Waters, Jesse Jackson and BJ Clinton’s mentor J. William Fulbright must be cancelled.

      5. Owns, is this finally the year that we win it all?
Look at this lineup. You could shuffle this order many different ways. If there are no significant injuries this is enough to jump on any team.
The pitching will be very good.
I want to say that Julio Urias has a season similar to Walker Buehler’s last season.
If Jansen can put it all behind him mentally and be counted on then this is the year.

For the Senator to have to take that kind of racism and keep a calm temperature is tough and I tip my cap to anyone who has had similar experiences. We should remove all vestiges of Dick Durbin and all other racist Democrats like Jimmy Kimmel and Jimmy Fallon from American life and drive them into hiding.

I remember you and Owns condemning Dick Durbin for his racism here.

Here’s some treason for you: Obama and Biden spied on the 2016 Republican presidential candidate, meddled in the campaign to favor the Democrat, absolved the Democrat of felonies, directly involved themselves in the FBI investigation of General Flynn, refused to transfer power peacefully and set in motion a coup attempt once they left.

That smacks of f**king Obama Biden treason.

      4. I’ve always respected Owns’ intelligence (even if I’ve never been on the same page politically) —but surely he sees by now that the intelligence community is out to get Trump. When Pelosi was asked for evidence of this [latest] “Russia” charge, she answered that she didn’t need evidence —all the proof she needed was the way “Trump’s been acting.”

    2. That does suck about Wayne and the pain he caused by saying those statements, perhaps throughout his lifetime. After reading this, I am glad that he was a major donor to cancer research and treatment. We all want to do as much good as we can, and as little damage as possible. Wayne did the damage, but he also did some good.

  3. It’s all in how you take the remarks. John Wayne cast a rather large shadow and could have easily been referring to his own shadow over the player in his remarks.
In this day and age people look at everything as being racist and homophobic. I wasn’t there I never spoke to John Wayne, so judging intent based on anecdotal experience is not for me. John Wayne was fine for his time. Just let him be.
As for removing statues and names, there will always something objectionable about public figures. I have heard from sewers that every US president who ever lived in the White House, defecated and some of them stunk. It is a mistake to cleanse the history of a person using turd soap.

I wonder though, was the picture being taken indoors or out, with natural lighting or fill-in flash? It’s conceivable that there were shadows as already mentioned and that Wayne with his experience might have been simply pointing that fact out. But hey if that’s what you’ve got, I say let’s burn down Newport Beach and start over. BTW, why haven’t we given back Chavez Ravine yet?? Wasn’t that some racist sh!t too?

Those dems did a helluva job picking those particular colors, as they belonged to the Ashanti tribe of warriors. A tribe with a rich history of warfare and conquest….

“ Jump to Slavery · Slavery was historically a tradition in the Ashanti Empire, with slaves typically taken as captives from enemies in warfare. The welfare of their slaves varied from being able to acquire wealth and …

How long are sincere people on the left going to be fooled and/or satisfied with Pelosi cutting ribbons at public park openings, talking about praying for her enemies, running toy drives for poor kids? 3. We should also give back Bruce’s Beach. I say raze the whole area and move out those damn liberals living so comfortably in their multimillion dollar overwhelmingly white communities and let the chips fall…
“ Bruce’s Beach was a small beach resort in the city of Manhattan Beach, California, that was owned by and operated for African Americans. It provided the African American community with opportunities unavailable at other beach areas because of segregation.

As a result of racial friction from disgruntled white neighbors, the property was seized using eminent domain proceedings in the 1920s and closed down. Some of the area was eventually turned into a city park in the 1960s and renamed Bruce’s Beach in 2007.”

If ever there was a need for reparations the liberal white bread beach bums should pony up post haste.

      4. You know who should pay reparations (reparations being something that oughta be paid by people who have personally robbed from others)? The Clintons. Their “Foundation” has raised hundreds of millions of dollars for the underprivileged and the victims of disasters —and yet none of it (or very little of it) ever hits the streets. After two horrific natural disasters, Bill has appeared on television commercials saying “please don’t make contributions of food or water —send checks to the Clinton Foundation.”
The people those contributions were supposed to help are still living in tents.

    2. Nice post, Pudly. I wish everybody on this blog would take the time to read Jose-Antonio Orosco’s “Cesar Chavez and the Common Sense of Nonviolence.” Destruction of property and, especially, violence toward other human beings has no place in the struggle for social justice in today’s America —which is, last time I looked, a participatory democracy.

  5. John Wayne, like all of us, had his faults and also his remarkable way of making us feel better as Americans to live in the greatest land of all. If we continue to remove the names of our past leaders and hero’s for newly discovered faults, our country will be without history. This is what all dictatorships have done including NAZI Germany, the Soviet Union and the ChinComs .. See Hong Kong today. The anarchists will remove Washington and Jefferson from our history without whom we would not have the Declaration of Indepdence or won the War of Independence. The land that gave us Lincoln and Grant (now the ire of the BLM) also emancipated slaves and ultimately paved the way for the first and only Black President in the Western world. Do we really want to purge everyone from history that has made an error of judgment., even in an off hand insensitive comment? I doubt few historical figures could withstand this judgement, much less the radical left that would tear down America. Please note that emigrants of all colors want to come to America today because this Country , with its faults, is still vastly better than the rest. I don’t see Balck Africans seeking to emigrate to Russia or China.
