Sunday Buzz: A John Wayne-USC Story

You probably heard Saturday about an effort to rename John Wayne Airport in Orange County.

That prompted an ex-USC player, who is African American, to call me late Saturday and recount a story from 1973 when Wayne toured the campus.

“We took a picture together and the photographer told John Wayne to pull his cap back because there was a shadow on his forehead,” said the player, who did not wish to be identified. “So Wayne said, `Well, look at him, he’s got a big shadow on his face.’

“I wanted to say something to Wayne but I didn’t.”

    For the player to have to take that kind of racism and keep a calm temperature is tough and I tip my cap to anyone who has had similar experiences.
    John Wayne is my dad’s favorite actor as he is to many people but I don’t know if my dad wants to hear this.

        Look at this lineup. You could shuffle this order many different ways. If there are no significant injuries this is enough to jump on any team.
        The pitching will be very good.
        I want to say that Julio Urias has a season similar to Walker Buehler’s last season.
        If Jansen can put it all behind him mentally and be counted on then this is the year.

    3. That does suck about Wayne and the pain he caused by saying those statements, perhaps throughout his lifetime. After reading this, I am glad that he was a major donor to cancer research and treatment. We all want to do as much good as we can, and as little damage as possible. Wayne did the damage, but he also did some good.

  4. It’s all in how you take the remarks. John Wayne cast a rather large shadow and could have easily been referring to his own shadow over the player in his remarks.
    In this day and age people look at everything as being racist and homophobic. I wasn’t there I never spoke to John Wayne, so judging intent based on anecdotal experience is not for me. John Wayne was fine for his time. Just let him be.
    As for removing statues and names, there will always something objectionable about public figures. I have heard from sewers that every US president who ever lived in the White House, defecated and some of them stunk. It is a mistake to cleanse the history of a person using turd soap.

    I wonder though, was the picture being taken indoors or out, with natural lighting or fill-in flash? It’s conceivable that there were shadows as already mentioned and that Wayne with his experience might have been simply pointing that fact out. But hey if that’s what you’ve got, I say let’s burn down Newport Beach and start over. BTW, why haven’t we given back Chavez Ravine yet?? Wasn’t that some racist sh!t too?

        The people those contributions were supposed to help are still living in tents.

  6. John Wayne, like all of us, had his faults and also his remarkable way of making us feel better as Americans to live in the greatest land of all. If we continue to remove the names of our past leaders and hero’s for newly discovered faults, our country will be without history. This is what all dictatorships have done including NAZI Germany, the Soviet Union and the ChinComs .. See Hong Kong today. The anarchists will remove Washington and Jefferson from our history without whom we would not have the Declaration of Indepdence or won the War of Independence. The land that gave us Lincoln and Grant (now the ire of the BLM) also emancipated slaves and ultimately paved the way for the first and only Black President in the Western world. Do we really want to purge everyone from history that has made an error of judgment., even in an off hand insensitive comment? I doubt few historical figures could withstand this judgement, much less the radical left that would tear down America. Please note that emigrants of all colors want to come to America today because this Country , with its faults, is still vastly better than the rest. I don’t see Balck Africans seeking to emigrate to Russia or China.
