USC Night Notes: Big Sweep And . . . Special Teams Honor?

USC beat Arizona State, 73-64, to record its first road sweep over the Arizona schools since 1985. That was also the last year the Trojans won the Pac-12 (then Pac-10).

  1. Scottie, I know the hoops story was a tough one for you to post – well-done, laddie. Big game for the Mobleys today, but USC is going to need some bench help outside the Pac-12 teams.

    For old time’s sake, I was hoping to see a Baxter gut photo post when you mentioned special teams.

    1. The boys were 26-32 at the free-throw line tonight. That’s a stat that stands out since we have been so poor the last few seasons. If they can keep shooting those consistently that would be a huge strength in games.

      1. Exactly nailed it. How many games did they lose because of lousy free throw shooting in the past? Too many to count. Great point. Now if Enfield flavor of the month can coach then they can go far in the tournament.

    2. Men did get a win after blowing an 18 pt. lead. It started
      in the last three minutes of the 1st half plus a few minutes
      at the start of the 2nd half. Lousy coaching by Enfield to
      stop the slide. Also ASU missing four good players of the
      team.

  2. If Baxter was often called the “Best Special Teams Coach In America” then someone has to come up with a good nickname for ST coach Snyder for finishing No. 1.

  3. You mean after all the hype about hiring consultants to hype the SC football program (then fired?), that Helton is so incompetent that he can’t even give credit to his special teams, who we now learn was No. 1 in the nation? Congrats to this unit even if Helton can’t tout them.

    1. Helton was right to downplay Snyder’s role. It was Coach Helton who showed the Special Teams unit how to improve on kick coverage (“don’t give them any lanes”) and recovering onside kicks (“try to get to the ball first”)….. he coached up Gary Bryant before his big return against UCLA (“run a little faster this time”).

      1. Or maybe Helton does not want to give Snyder credit because he is scared out of his pants that Snyder could take his job? After all, Snyder was picked by the AD not Helton. Helton continues to show what a petty person he is. Now when one of his players get into trouble (e.g., McClains) he washes his hands of them instead of trying to work something out so the player can return to the team. Pilate washed his hands too.

      2. I never even thought of that, Wayne. Sean would make a great Head Coach. He’s a master of detail, articulate, personable…& has championship blood in his veins.

      3. A big plus for Sean Snyder is that he uses his talent and makes sure that the best people are on the field, as with Bru McCoy recovering onside kicks. Helton lets talent sit and wither on the vine.

      5. Helton hired Marshall Cherrington away from Cal and is now USC’s “Director of Recruiting Strategy”.
        Greg Biggins is calling this a big move for USC as Cherrington is said to be responsible for Cal’s top 25 class..

        Mike, this doesn’t move me at all. Recruiting is the least of our worries. Cool, he can recruit but recruiting isn’t the problem. I know Biggins is just doing his job and paints the proper picture, bu I don’t see how Biggins can make a case towards this hire effecting the actual problem (Clay Helton) with the team.
        This guy could very well be a homerun hire but he can only get the kids to Los Angeles then Helton mucks up the rest.

    Are you happy or sad that USC swept the Az schools? If they had lost one game or both, you would have been ripping into Enfield and tha makes you feel good. That way you can I told you so that Enfield is bad. Free throwing shooting has improved. Talent is very good. But since they are winning, you won’t come out and say that Enfield is doing a good job. You can’t have it both ways. Come on Scooter, announce that USC is doing well in basketball.
