USC Morning Buzz: Even Little Decisions Prove Tough

One of the funnier aspects of the USC football, for those on the inside, is how few decisions Clay Helton makes.

I’m not even talking about the ones being made by his superiors like hiring assistant coaches.

I’m talking about little decisions, that Helton still gets to make, which he continually farms out to a support staff member. I could name him but it’s not important.

“Clay can’t blink without (his support staffer telling him what to do,” a former USC coach said.

“Every time (Helton gets asked something), he asks his guy, `what do you think?’ It’s insane.”

The truth is this stuff sounds implausible but for the people who work within the football program (who do read this blog), they know it is true. Like I said, a sideways program.

      He’s Pudley the Poacher Man.
      He’ll scoop all you post,
      Cuz he thinks he’s host,
      He’s Pudley the Poacher Man.
      His posts are all stolen,
      So his ego gets swollen,
      He’s Pudley the Poacher Man.

  1. If ever there was a guy so easily managed as the emperor who was convinced his new suit was made out of material only smart people could see it, Clay Helton is that guy.
If Helton ever runs out of the tunnel in the buff, turn to tebowobama or FY and ask them if they think his pants are hemmed evenly.

  2. WE ALL KNOW WHO MAKES THE DECISIONS AND PAYS THE BILLS AT OREGON, AND WHO UNCLE PHIL IS. I DON’T THINK THE PLAYERS SEND HAPPY BIRTHDAY WISHES TO CLAY HELTON, MIKE BOHN, OR CAROL FOLT, BUT AT OREGON THE PLAYERS KNOW WHERE THERE PAYCHECKS COME FROM AND IT’S UNCLE PHIL-CEO NIKE. Is it really surprising how well Oregon does in the Pac 12 in all sports with that type of competitive advantage which is very unfair. SEE BELOW.

      2. I’m reminded of how ignorant Pig Latin is. I always thought that you’d have to be a Moron to speak that way. Regarding those 2 Morons – Defense Rests!

      3. Wish granted MG,
At his inauguration president Biden invited several sports figures including Clay Helton. Helton was allowed to meet the president in the oval office.
Helton: “Coach Biden I brought you a game ball from the UCLA game.”
Biden: “Thank you Mr. Tollner, a ball? From UC-what?”
Helton: “I’ve heard you received a record number of votes from each of the states, you must have campaigned like a warrior.”
Biden: Boats on grates? No I’m not a warrior. I’m a peacful, um, friendly, um, (waves hand) unwarlike guy. ”
Helton: “I’m happy things are getting back to normal, we hope to start spring drills soon.”
Biden: “No drills, I’m opposed to drilling, I have raised gas prices sixty cents a gallon in less time than any other presidential guy.” Helton: I have an electric cart shaped like a football helmet. ”
Biden: “I have a battery powered heart.”
Helton: “It’s a pleasure to meet you sir.”
Biden : The honor is mine, it’s not every day you meet Carol Peters, keep up the good work and say hi to the people in South Carolina for me. ”
Helton: “Keep up the good work sir.”
Biden: “Damn kids threw their basketball in here, you want it?”

  4. The last decision Helton made got him banned from the coaching staff sleep over.

  5. This entire scenario reminds me of a story my uncle told me about Sparky Anderson and a local college baseball coach who Sparky was really good friends with. Sparky goes out to the college one day to see Fall Workouts for this baseball team and the head coach was going on and on about how his shortstop was having trouble going to his right, fielding the ball cleanly, making accurate throws, etc. Sparky looked at the coach and said, “Who’s the dumbshit who keeps putting that kid at short to begin with?”
The moral, instead of piling on Clay Helton, who’s shortcomings as a head football coach are as plain as the nose on all of our faces, blame Haden, Swann, Bohn, and Folt, who put him in charge and have kept him in charge of the program.

    1. trojnfn4,

The problem is Dolt, Haden, Swann will all blame Bohn for Helton. Dolt will blame him because she is an idiot and like Helton’s ass. Haden will blame Bohn because he should have known that he should have gotten rid of Helton, and Swann will blame Bohn because he has to get rid of the problem of signing an extension. This is how SC is being run right now. The three stooges would be better than the clowns in office right now.

      1. Bohn made it clear he wanted to fire Helton, but was not allowed in previous years. This year is the year. Bohn just need ANY excuse.

Bohn has earned enough respect that he can start to make demands. Bohn/Sosna are the ones in charge with the plan here. Clay isnt going to walk away from the money, so it is just a game of waiting to see how the year goes.

Despite Clay’s lack of leadership, TO has the defensive side on the right track, Stiner has strength and conditioning on the right path and the one problem area remaining is whether Harrell/new Clay/Jinks can figure how to add an effective run game to the pass game.

It is still a mess, but it is a mess that could actually dominate the very weak Pac-12 South.

      2. When did Bohn earn respect? Was it during his “it’s all about the seed” speech?
