Will Anyone With USC Ties Be Involved In Coaching Search?

When Pete Carroll said, “I don’t even know anybody hardly down there” about USC, my antennas went up.

I know Carroll has talked to Mike Bohn and Carroll is notorious for giving advice in coaching searches. Years ago, he told me he called Nebraska and recommended Jeff Tedford because he wanted to get Tedford out of the Pac-10.

Carroll’s comment does illustrate one issue: USC has had such a turnover among its administrators that one wonders if anyone who understands the tradition is involved in the decision-making process?

The new coach will be picked by the ex-Cincinnati crowd. But will anyone with USC ties offer some input? In the past, people like Willie McGinest or Keyshawn Johnson might be involved but who knows now?

    1. I am hopeful we find the right fit. I’m open to even looking at great high school coaches who know how to communicate to the young and who know how to motivate and evaluate them. I’m sure a great high school coach already understands college football and could make the transition. Problem may be hiring quality associate coaches, but an intelligent guy could seek help with that. SC currently is a boat without a rudder. We need leadership. The team doesn’t seem to have any leaders and Donte cannot motivate harrell or orlando who know they are on their way out. 6 years of helton culture has destroyed this once proud program. helton’s infusion of incompetence, laziness, weakness and lying wreak everywhere in the program.

      1. I really feel for Donte. Can you imagine what it’s like to work with an entire collectivity of folks who ALL know they are goners…and are ALL looking for their next gig? Add to that an entire team that has no clue what 2022 has in store for them.

    2. Senator (D) Cory Booker look-a-like James Franklin is so bland and boring that his nickname at Vanderbilt was “Milk Toast”.

      LMFAO!

You can’t have a brotha with no soul being the USC Football head coach. The inner city recruits in Los Angeles aren’t going to buy into him, no fucking chance.

Pretty soon they’ll start calling him Uncle Tom when they see him kissing Folt and Bohn’s ass.

Look how fast Donte Williams lost the team once the players knew he didn’t have the balls to make the changes needed to the defense and crap offense.

L.A. ain’t Happy Valley, Mr. Milk Toast Franklin usn’t going to escape criticism here. USC just got rid of one boring predictable kiss ass in Clay Helton and now you clowns want USC to hire another one in James Franklin?

You motherfucker’s really are gluttonfor punishment.

Fuck Franklin, not impressed by in the least.

  1. USC does not need advice from any former players, or administrators. I’ve seen several former Trojans endorse Eric Bienemy on social media, which tells me they don’t get it . So let Mike Bohn roll the dice on the new coach, because he actually has Athletic Director experience unlike the two former Jackasses who held the position before him . SC really can’t go wrong with the top 5 coaches who are being considered by most media outlets, so let the process work itself out.

    1. I respect you, Bill —- but I’ve seen one too many press releases from and one too many interviews with Mike Bohn to trust him with this decision. Bohn is a nice guy — not overly smart, not overly aggressive. We need somebody who is a LOT more ambitious about the future of our football program to get this right & do what is needed—and we plainly don’t have that person.

      1. Bohn has proven his lack of capability by failing to fire helton……..even if folt interfered. I have no respect for any man who becomes a lackey to keep his job. He showed a total lack of principles and/or lack of football acumen. Either are damning to our program. Those past two years added more depth to helton’s culture of lazy, weak, non-competitive practices and philosophy.

Who will the terrible trio of caruso, folt and bohn select to lead SC out of its current football hell. The once noble blue blood is now a joke.

Do they care? They certainly don’t care what the fans think.

I have the sneaking suspicion the crew you listed just smile at the complaints of fans. I honestly don’t think they have any inkling how much damage they’ve done to the school’s (and their OWN) reputation(s).

      3. 1. Dave Aranda or Luke Fickell (if the wife permits the move)
        2. Matt Campbell or maybe Jonathan Smith (loss at Wazzu last week)
        3. Bill O’Brien? I’m not convinced he favors CFB over the NFL. We don’t need a guy to jumpstart his career with us just for the NFL or James Franklin.

I think the first three names could regularly win us 10 games–maybe more.
(I don’t think Brian Kelly is a particularly good coach, so he is beatable with our talent and a better coach. I think Kiff and maybe Sark are smarter than Kelly.)
I think the last three names could regularly win us 9 games. I do think that
Franklin would “win the games he should win, and occasionally surprise ND, Ore.

PED’s can build muscle, they aren’t going to do anything for these Trojan girls character or lack thereof.

At least when the Ting’s were on the team players were jacked and eager to tackle and inflict pain on opponents. These girls that Clay Helton so called coach, the only thing they want to hit are the showers.

They’re probably all in there discussing social media bullshit and what they’re going to wear to The Grove. Being the bunch of pansy asses that they are.

  2. It shouldn’t be hard for a motivated, professional AD to identify the best people, including those who might not be household names, but could be better than some of the older guys who are big names.

Then it comes down to whether they will offer enough $, and get a commitment that they can clean house if needed and that they wont get interference from Folt’s office.

    1. Think about the cost of hiring a top coach and top assistants to live in Cali, USC is known for being cheap.

If Folt can’t stay out of this then it will never be fixed.

Get rid of the gimmick air raid and its coach, get rid of that loser orlando and his coaches. Start new.

      1. Harrell & Orlando gone by December 1st? I think that much is assured, Carra. I just have serious concerns about who those clowns get replaced with. Bohn has shown REPEATED bad decision making when it comes to the football program. Literally nothing he’s done has been an example of exceptional judgement.

  3. Probably for the best. Keyshawn has had some terrible recommendations in the past, including keeping Helton. Too many people from USC want someone who “gets SC”, even when the candidate wouldn’t be considered by any other top football program.

  4. The next coach isn’t going to loved by everyone, PC sure wasn’t.

I’ve seen people mention O’Brien. If you believe the new book about the Patriots, he tried to get fired to take over for Belicheck, you want to hire that ? He’d be gone at the first NFL offer, pass.

Petersen is said to not want it, not enamored by the guy but he would fix the mess that is currently USC football.

Not a Fickell fan either, but he could fix this mess.

Don’t see Franklin getting the job, if Folt is as anal as we think about people’s past, how does she get past the Vanderbilt mess while he was there ?

Wolf threw out the guy from Iowa St. Don’t see it, think the LA stage is too big for him.

Anyone up for Stoops at Kentucky ?

I could see SC going after the Oregon State coach, don’t know how that would play out in the long run.

I have little faith in Bohn, think he’s a puppet. He could have canned Gomer last year and didn’t, why is anyone’s guess.

PC should fix his own team in Seattle and please don’t hire him at USC

    1. If Franklin’s baggage is acceptable, then I am thinking Meyer’s is as well. I am guessing neither one will be offered.

Dave Aranda is another. Fickell’s teams seem very disciplined. They swabbed the floor with the domers in south bend. Campbell? He has a 57% winning percentage, but maybe that is overachieving at Iowa State.

The way in which Bohn fired the village idiot suggests that he has the go-ahead to offer a top flight coach. This will be career-defining, so he has enormous incentives to get this right, assuming Folt keeps her hand out of the cookie jar.

      1. 67,
Assuming Bohn REALLY has unlimited discretion on this (which, by the way, I don’t), we need to remember he isn’t the only Athletic Director in the country looking for a new coach. There are plenty of more savvy guys competing against him — and none of them has to sell working for a daffy President who would insist on firing her new coach if somebody from UCLA discovered an unwoke text he sent 11 years ago.
Wanda Austin said the quiet part out loud when she remarked, “Coach Helton is somebody we don’t have to WORRY about —he doesn’t drink, take drugs or play around.” That list of no-no’s is uppermost in Bohn’s mind as he goes about his business….and that puts him in a different universe than other A. D.’s who are looking for a coach first…and a saint second.

      2. Campbell too good of a coach for USC. He would only play the best players at each position, not the ones with most likes from USC fans.

Besides, he evaluated and recruits too well for USC.

  6. Fickell is only as good as his assistants and once they leave he’s fucked, he’ll revert back to the one year he was head coach at Ohio St. going 6-7. Notre Dame isn’t as good as a lot of you clowns and the other clowns in the media seem to think, they’ve struggled all year against mediocre teams, so don’t put too much stock in Cincinnati’s win over the Irish.

Cambpell, if he’s so good then why is he still at Iowa St.? Keeps being mentioned for other more lucrative jobs, but no takers.

Has anyone even heard of Campbell actually being interviewed for a better job?

Texas never considered him, Baylor didn’t even offer him a cup of coffee, Kansas St. passed on even mentioning him as a possible candidate.

Whole bunch of red flags associated with Cambpell, he must be into some kinky shit if everyone keeps passing on him.

Carroll owned Tedford and Cal after 2003. He won six in a row after the 3OT game. And Cal continued to slide by losing to USC an additional eight more games in a row.

And, a two – time national championship winning coach wanted to get rid of Tedford?!

  10. “Head coach Donte Williams doesn’t feel Pac-12 title is ‘off the table’ for USC football” ~uscfootball.com

“The Trojans suffered their third conference loss of the season and third consecutive loss in the Coliseum with Saturday’s historic 42-26 loss to Utah. The loss put USC in a bad spot for its chances to return to the Pac-12 Championship.”

“USC interim head coach Donte Williams was asked in his Sunday media presser about how he goes about keeping the team motivated over an extended period of time, especially now that the Pac-12 title is a long shot.”

“I never really think that it’s off the table because the Pac-12 seems to beat up each other. A couple times that if you look at the Pac-12 or whatnot, teams have won the conference in the South being 6-3 in conference,” he said. “So nothing is ever off the table. It’s off the table if you start to quit or give up. I don’t see that in this team. I don’t see that in this group of guys. I’m fortunate enough that a lot of these guys have my back. You can talk to a lot of them, they see the changes. But at the same time change just doesn’t happen overnight. It’s a lot of things that need to take place, and at the same time we’ve got to stay the course. We can’t all of sudden make change and start doing things and just because a game didn’t go your way that you just switch everything back up. It doesn’t go that way. We have to make sure we stay the course and stay doing the things that we feel are the right things that are best fitted for this particular team.” ~uscfootball.com

  11. I really don’t expect much with the current school administration in a search for a solution to the football fail. I do think Mike Bohn understands the need for a well rounded coach who doesn’t want to be a friend to the students but a leader for the team.

  12. Apparently the Bohner has found another coaching candidate. He has USC ties. He does NOT sleep around, drink, or do drugs. And he is an experienced football coach who can draw assistants from the family coaching tree. His name is Tyson Helton (Gomer’s younger brother). He currently has Western Kentucky at 1-4. Kim Helton (father) at Univ. of Houston was a loser. Gomer Helton at USC was a loser. And Tyson Helton is proving to be a loser. Bohn Head may have found his guy and he can go back to rubbing Dolt’s shoulders in her office.

Things didn’t go well for Mora post-Atlanta, and one wonders to what degree he was ever a good coach (I think it’s not a closed case just yet), but he would have represented an upgrade over what we’ve had I think…and he was far ahead of the QB curve over at least us, with that miserable-to-defend Brett Hundely at the controls (although I don’t recall him having anything to do with the offense)…
