The Auto-Pilot Early Top 25 Rankings

It’s almost like people are on auto-pilot when they do their too-early Top 25 rankings.

I’ve already seen USC as high as No. 14 (Dennis Dodd) but the Trojans seem to just get slotted into the Top 25 rankings because of their name.

I get that Lincoln Riley, Caleb Williams and an easy schedule are positives. But what about the negatives?

But USC always made these rankings under Clay Helton, so of course they will also make them under Riley.

If you want real insanty, look at these odds:

      1. Add: Where we are TODAY is without an experienced quarterback….and without Bru McCoy as successor to Drake London.
Lincoln can fix the first [and Carol can fuck up the second —- in fact, I’m depending on both to happen]…..

      2. You’re right, I think about linemen too which so far Riley hasn’t done a good job of recruiting for 2022. I think it will come mainly through the transfer portal this recruiting cycle.

      3. OK, so the two Williams from Oklahoma are essential, but my take on it is that we somewhat forget about the amount of incredibly talented athletes we have on the roster. There are a ton of players that were recruited last year for the defense – Wright, Davis, Simon, Foreman, Bullock, Prophet, McRee, etc, that are really talented athletes, but were completely underdeveloped and misused by the poor coaching staff last year.

Most of the teams we face next year have much less talent on their roster. We are going to be a very young team, as we dont have alot of juniors or seniors that are going to start.

Still, with Raleek and the 2 Williams and McCoy coming back and McRee getting better from next year, we really do have some pretty great players that just need a real coaching staff.

So many questions about this team. But it will be fun and we are headed in the right direction for once.

  1. I keep mentioning a recruiting wall around Southern California as others do including Mike Bohn. Riley is bringing in great talent. I remember Jimmy Johnson at University of Miami in the mid-80’s. I feel like we’re on the verge of something like that where all the local talent stays home to “Fight on for Ol’’SC!”Jimmy Johnson and Dennis Erickson (with JJ’s and his own recruits) 3 National Championship at U of Miami 1987, 1989, and 1991. Lincoln Riley is raising the bar again at USC, maybe higher than ever before✌️

    1. FWIW, Lincoln Riley way more accomplished now than Jimmy Johnson was back 83-84 coming out of Okie State where he was kind of a 7-4 guy every year. OU and Nebraska dominated back then. OU will go the way of Nebraska in the SEC.

      1. When Nebraska left the Big 12 for the B1G, they cut themselves off from Texas recruiting. OU going to the SEC will only expand its recruiting. Wear Alabama & Georgia are at will be tough, but the rest of the SEC doesn’t fill me with dread.

      2. Nebraska’s issues were the elimination of partial qualifiers and more significantly coaching and recruiting issues after Tom Osborne. Like what happened at OU after Barry Switzer. OU should be OK as long as Venables can keep the momentum going. But instead of 2-losses, 3 and 4-losses may become the norm for OU in the SEC.

    2. I say let’s raise the bar, while the Commie Los Angeles Times Rag says: USC fans, don’t get your hopes up.

      1. They’re right. Anything more than 6-6 should be viewed as an absolute coup. Could they win 8? It’s a stupid easy schedule. They aren’t beating Notre Dame, UCLA, or Utah. That’s for sure. Any team that was in a bowl has a huge advantage b/c they got 15 extra practice to develop next years contributors while USC doesn’t even have a QB or an identity. He ain’t gonna undo 12 years of crap in spring & fall camp. Ya’ll are delusional. Also calling an opinion you don’t like communist isn’t a great look.

    3. Very happy with everything Riley has done & is trying to do. But we must remember: No other USC Head Coach has had to deal with a wacko like Folt before. The first time someone accuses him of a recruiting violation Lincoln’s gonna find out she doesn’t have his back.

      1. Have you ever pondered if possibly, you could be the wacko? That’s not fair. Have you ever considered you’re susceptible to buying into things people say to garner your attention. It’s not like Tucker Carlson, Shapiro, Rogan or any of the clown car squad are actually telling the truth. They’ve gotten you addicted to outrage and anger and they know they can keep being rich by throwing the anger chum you’re now hooked on. Antifa doesn’t exist, nor does Critical Race Theory in the way it’s presented. It’s a theoretical class taught in law schools. How you’ve not realized that the entirety of Republican politics is nothing more than slandering the democrats and being anti-everything. You all treat politics like sports, you listen to or watch what ever so you can sit around the dinner table or pony up to a bar and rant about how the Dems have figured out how to weaponize syphilis or some shot on par to that. You should know that no serious person will take any stock in anything you say after the see you yelling at the clouds about wokeness, what ever the hell that is, or something socialism

    4. Yes, but we did miss out on Ernest Greene and Hero Kanu. We are still not getting the players in the trenches. Of course, Riley didnt even have a staff to recruit and those players had already made their minds up for top programs.

I would like to USC add more 5 star players to the 2023 class and hit #1 position. Send a message that from here on out, we are going to be the best.

If Caleb commits to USC, can we start to pull more talent away from OK?

      1. Obviously Riley wanted Caleb, like, yesterday. Something (big or very small) is holding things up. Perhaps Riley’s trying to get the whole Oklahoma team to come to USC at once —whatever it is, I hope it gets resolved in USC’s favor this week.

      2. WeAreSC: Shortly after the Transfer Portal news hit, we hit up McCutchin to find out if he’s considering USC?

“Lincoln Riley will always be a top option,” said McCutchin.”It’s Lincoln Riley.”

This morning we were informed McCutchin will take an official visit to USC.

  2. We don’t have the Defense to win a National title yet. Watching the title game last night was a clinic on fast, aggressive defense. Coach Riley needs to get some D-linemen and linebacker transfers in here ASAP or we’ll be in high scoring shootouts every Saturday.

  3. ND and Oregon have new coaches, as does much of the P12. USC has the highest quality (per star ranking) of any school in the PAC 12 and is among the tops in the country still, and we seem to have not just the continuity of a HC and DC, but the SAME system and likely the same QB. Plus, from that talent, there will be a quarter to a third players that are supposed to be an upgrade. So the bar should be very high, Playoffs and NC contender high. Lest we forget, Hugz was 6-1 and a dropped ball away from winning the PAC and going undefeated in his last full year at SC. NC contender or bust, no excuses.

    1. Stars don’t mean shit dude. JT Daniels was the #1 player in the Country and he won all of 6ish games as a starting QB. Bru McCoy the mighty 5 star is somewhere I assume.

      1. You cant blame JT for that season, it was Graham Harrell’s idiotic air raid offense, all of 2 pages long.

We have really talented athletes that have been wasted by a horrible coaching staff and horrible culture set by Clay Helton. We now have a real coaching staff. Sure there are big holes in the defensive front 7, but maybe if Pili comes back and Sopsher becomes the beast he could be, it might not be as bad as we think. The linebackers are the real issue. Can we develop Davis, Simon and will Solo come back healthy?

  4. What is all this talk about SC being in the running for a 2022 football championship?– The team just finished 4-8 because it had weak linebacking, defensive linemen and offensive linemen. Have those 3 areas been upgraded? And at present the Trojans don’t even have a first-string quarterback.

Apparently Jim Jones and his Kool-Aid have been resurrected in SC-land.

    1. It’s not as bad as all that, John. That team that finished 4-8 should have been 8-4. They lost interest after getting drilled by Oregon State […& they literally stopped playing in the UCLA and Cal games— in which they gave up without a fight]. It wasn’t because we have bad players. It was a case of losing that most precious of sports commodities—‘want to.’ The right coach (and we have him) can turn this thing around. Fast.

BTW Clownster’s, Andyain’twinning finally met a real BB team and, as usual, he loses. Stanford clowns the bozo’s 75 – 69.

  7. Saw an advertisement in Scott’s old stomping grounds of a paper yesterday. You can win tickets to see Ucla playing the “Stanford Cardinals” (includes parking)
    First who’d want that?
Second it’s the Stanford Cardinal (no s )
Third buying something to get in a drawing for college basketball? What if it’s Pepsi? Or Dos XX? I would pass anyway.
