Morning Buzz: “Great Success At USC” For Graham Harrell

I’ve almost forgotten about Graham Harrell.

But West Virginia coach Neal Brown talked about Harrell at Big 12 media day.

“He’s had great success at not only USC but at North Texas, as well. He’s been able to have success with different types of players and different types of offenses.”

Great success at USC? I must have missed it.

“Here’s what Graham has brought — a different energy about him. He’s confident without being arrogant. He’s extremely humble. It helps that he was a great player in this league, and I think that gets the players’ attention on your current roster but also in recruiting.”

It’s always nice to hear the optimism of July.

Harrell works his magic with JT Daniels this season.

  2. Just checked out Triangle Lake, Oregon where the Oregon Duck player struck his head and died.

    It is a dangerous area with a 25 foot natural diving platform, and the waterfalls are made up of slippery rocks.

    I bet this kid lost his balance on the way down and struck his head on a rock while moving at a fast speed. Other kids have been hurt in this area. But I can see where it would be a lot of fun if you don’t get hurt in the process.

    1. Just reminded me of the scene in “Apocalypto” where the Mayan honcho, Zero Wolf, ordered his men to jump the cliff in pursuit of Jaguar Paw. A couple of them didn’t make it.

      2. Yeah, Taza (from Mayans MC) was pretty ripped for that movie. But it was great seeing Jaquar Paw get him in the end.

        Like many movies, it goes into the vault for a while. Then they’ll show it over & over again over the span of 3-4 weeks.

  3. Anytime you have a offensive coordinator who doesn’t believe in running the ball, you will fail sooner then later. You’ll never see Mike Leach, Graham Harrell, or Lincoln Riley coaching in a national championship game unless they’re a position coach. There’s no substitute for size, strength, and physical football, and neither one of those three idiots emphasize it.

    2. But Navy is hammering out national championships every year. Alabama had the 7th best passing offense in the country and the 75th best rushing offense.

If only he had looked at Harrell or Riley before they came to USC he would understand that he is as full of crap as any poser on here. Both RAN the ball, a lot. When you have zero O line like USC had two years ago, yes you have to pass, as we saw.

    8. Alabama didn’t win the NC but still, it didn’t even have a top 5 offense. Western Ky, Virginia, Kent St., Coastal Carolina all had “better” offenses and all of them plus Purdue, Miss State, Nevada, etc. had better passing offenses… So no, the passing offense isn’t winning a NC.

      Passing offenses play off the ability to get short yardage situations and staying ahead of the chains- the passing game plays off that for winning teams.

      If you can’t beat the big boy teams’ asses on the ground forget it. If you can you will open up your passing too, but more crucially you’ll sustain drives.

      Again, if it was about passing yardage we would have Charlotte, South Alabama, Boise St, LA Tech, FIU, UTEP, Nebraska, New Mexico St, East Carolina, North Carolina, Western Michigan, Tennessee, Texas Tech …. as our top teams– you get the point.

      We were in the top 15 in pass attempts for what good that did us. Georgia WASN’T EVEN IN THE TOP 50.

      YPR– Oregon, Michigan, Utah, Georgia, all were in the top 15. So was Oklahoma though it rushed about 100 times less– and its rushing really was mostly in games vs weak opponents, LR is known to run that counter trey a million times vs Sisters of the Poor but then turn into a 7 on 7 vs the big boys who find it easier to clamp down. Same problems against teams that LR had far more talent than, like Oklahoma St, Baylor, etc. teams that just outcoached LR which has become the trend.

      LR is a bright young guy, he can adjust. I dunno if that’s happening, or if it will, but meh, I’m not getting the highest salary in CFB, and he may well be jumping to the NFL very soon. SC hasn’t made his job any easier with the recent moves but all of that could blow up too. Meh.

      2. Can you read? Or are you stuck on stupid– LSU had one of the best rushing 3rd down conversions. I explained clearly how this works as part of the sum, and you said “Joe Burrows”. Yes, Joe Burrows with a rusher who was one of the top per carry in the nation, and one of the top teams in converting those necessary 3rd downs. So when you look at offensive stats and just say “Burrow he good, LSU made lots passes” you then forget, Washington State Cougars actually put up better passing numbers and total offense but it killed them. You also forget Edwards-Helaire finished the regular season with 1,414 rushing yards, which ranked third-most in a single season in school history, and he had 7 yrd a carry and 110 yards on the ground and got 5 passes for 55 yrds and the LSU RBs couldn’t be stopped on 3rd down conversions, but teams tried to clamp down on that running attack that blew up the passing attack. SEC teams tried to pick their poison and with most coaches that means stopping the run first:
        Edwards-Helaire rushed for 145 yards in LSU’s 36–16 victory over second-ranked Georgia, then vs third-ranked Alabama, rushed for 103 yards and 3 TDs and caught 9 short passes for 80 yrds almost all YAC.

        I used those stats so that you could see him doing against the best defense in the country in Clemson, as well as racking up those yards vs the cream puffs that are SEC OOC opponents and SEC opponents.

        LSU Tigers and the other leaders: San José St Spartans, Hawai’i Rainbow Warriors, our own USC Trojans, Texas Tech Red Raiders, Troy Trojans, Arkansas State Red Wolves, Iowa State… But those were teams that couldn’t convert 3rd downs or sustain a drive consistently to save their lives.

        Oh that’s right, one team ran the other into the ground and play actioned across the field, while Riley tried to throw his way out with no real running game that would stand up to a physical defense like LSU’s.

        What’s really baffling is that you you are using the example of LSU to prop up Riley’s schemes when Riley was routed by LSU by about 50 points in the biggest blow out in CFB playoffs history… and it wasn’t even that close- LR got one TD by the defense, and two in garbage time by rushing, couldn’t complete a pass in the redzone to save his life, put in Spencer Rattler in for Jalen Hurts as if it was the QBs fault – the game was over by the 2nd quarter…

        Didn’t LSU hang almost 70 points on Riley’s Oklahoma team? LSU got 500 yrds passing including a lot of swing passes and wheel routes to their backs, and hitting their TE up the seam, while their backs put in 160 yrds rushing.

        How could anyone watch USC during the Chow era and not recognize that LSU was playing something akin to that offense, vs Riley’s offense which has become notorious for flopping vs big boy teams? Guess you still have no idea.

        But you keep up with those clever phrases you used at the soda shop 60 years ago. And stop pretending you’re btthurt just because someone talks to you the same way you think you can talk to them.
