A Big USC-Flavored Anniversary

On July 20, 1969, 53 years ago today, Neil Armstrong and Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin touched down in the Sea of Tranquility, becoming the first humans ever to land on the Moon.

A year later, Armstrong gave an oral thesis defense for his master’s in aeronautical engineering at USC. He passed.

There is a statue of Armstrong at USC.

  1. Good excuse to post about those pictures coming back from the Webb telescope. They are amazing!!

    I’m glad the half dozen micrometeoriods that have it since December have caused minimal damage. Let’s hope it doesn’t run into anything more substantial.

    2. We are observing the beginning of the universe some 13 billion years ago. Of course what we are seeing happened millions of years ago (that speed of light is so darn slow)

    3. I remember Dad listening to his “Oldies, but Goodies” on an 8 track! Blueberry Hill, Come Go With Me, etc. Loved ’em!

      I’m a former musician. I listen to everything from Bach & Beethoven to Disturbed & Rammstein and all kinds of shit in between, especially 70’s & 80’s rock. Stevie Ray Vaughan died way too young! He was a bad ass.

    3. Gabby: I know that Biden ran on the idea that Trump failed to deal with Covid and that he would eradicate the virus. How did that work out? Less than 300,000 deaths when Biden took office and we are now at over a million, 2.5 times worse than Trump. What were Biden’s accomplishments in dealing with Covid? I can’t think of any. I remember he tried to say the vaccine was developed and distributed under his watch, a lie. Trump policies streamlined the development of the vaccine in record time. Biden then mandated the vaccine as a condition of government employment. Something he earlier stated that he would never do. He encouraged the states to extend lockdowns thereby crushing the economy. A John Hopkins study shows that lockdowns did virtually nothing to limit the virus. He continues to push masks and mandatory vaccines even though masks are largely ineffective and the virus has mutated rendering the vaccine largely ineffective against infection.

      And are you seriously making jokes about Trump being physically unfit for the job and needing Depends. Biden can’t walk onto Air Force One or read off a teleprompter.

She deferred to the administration’s experts to address the specifics of the paper, but she added that “the president has been clear that we are not pushing lockdowns, we have not been pro-lockdown, that has not been his agenda. Most of the lockdowns actually happened under the previous president. What our objective has been is to convey we have the t**ls we need to keep our country open.

        Funny how Florida which had minimal lockdowns did as well with Covid as many other states. Their economy is now thriving and people are moving there in droves. Even AOC visited Miami. Similarly, South Dakota had minimal lockdowns and did as well as highly restricted North Dakota. Sweden and Iceland had minimal lockdowns and actually did better than most other European states. But keep pushing the lockdown/mask-up nonsense. Do you want to close the schools again? Cancel little league or going to the beach? Wear a mask outside while walking your dog? Has any democratic politician even acknowledged these policies were a mistake?

    Panel, Armstrong, tell us what you know about aeronautical engineering?

    Armstrong’s response: Work with NASA for a lot of years and last year on July 20 ,1969, I was the first human to plant foot on the moon.
