Defensive End Picks Baylor Over USC, Washington

Three-star defensive end Trey Wilson of Garland, Texas, committed to Baylor today over USC and Washington.

I wouldn’t say this was a critical loss but Wilson did get attention from the fanboy media, which always raises hopes of the recruiting junkies.

I keep going back to this: USC can recruit skill players. It can recruit corners and safeties. And linebackers.

But where it will make-or-break its class is with offensive linemen and defensive tackles. That is where USC becomes a national power if it hopes to compete against SEC teams or Ohio State.

      1. The jury is still out regarding Foreman.
The jury came back with a ‘guilty’ verdict involving Daniels, but we shall see; stranger things have happened

  1. Yes, we are clear on the fact that SC needs offensive and defensive linemen. It is also clear that they are not getting them–yet.

That 4-8 Season last year apparently is sitting in the craw of many a prospect. Sure, SC has potential in 2022. But the thinking may be ‘
‘Let’s see how the Trojans do this year, then I will make up my mind’

      1. I believe UCLA has a hard to time recruiting because Chip keeps eating the entire buffet they lay out for the visiting recruits and their families.

    1. Mr. Owns, Strike-3 implies an entity is out of the game. I hardly think that applies to SC football.

I know you will not publicly agree with that, but privately we all know where you truly stand. Keep it real so you can remain relevant.

  2. Today was a win-win for Scottie. Losing the guy is a win, he picked another program over USC. If the guy had come, that would have been a win as well (“what? another 3 star! Riley can’t recruit top d-linemen!”).

Recruiting now is as much or more about NIL $$. Riley had very effective O-lines at OK. This will sort itself out.

  4. This happens to every team every year. We just make a bigger deal out of it now than in the past. The “fanboys”, I am raising my hand, have more access to where potential recruits are possibly headed than ever before. Prior to social media we had to look at recruiting magazines to know much, now we know everything and are updated day to day. I think half of it, maybe more, is just ego and dollars. I’ll still follow along, but I’m not going to pretend that every guy who has is in his top 20, then 10, then 7, then…..will sign with us.

  5. WE DON’T NEED ANY MORE SKILLED PLAYERS… WE NEED THE “BIG, MEAN UGLIES” TO PROTECT THEM. USC WILL BE AN AVERAGE TEAM AT BEST, UNTIL THEY CAN RECRUIT AND WIN THESE PLAYERS FROM OHIO STATE, ALABAMA WISH LISTS.

      1. No… I didn’t see them.
        Thanks for your kudos.
Our 1967 game with Oregon St was very disappointing.
0-3 lost with OJ in the Backfield?
I was 19 and could figure out that Coach McKay was not at his best.,
We beat UCLA the following week for the National Title, so that eased the pain.
The 1968 gsme in the Coliseum was a brawl in the first half.
They had Bill Enyart as their Huge FB.
Big chunks of yards in the first Half.
Coach McKay made some great adjustments at halftime, and we beat them fairly easily in the last half.
I had a great game, made lots of tackles and was Pac-8 defensive player of the week. OJ had a great game.
        Cheers Bob Jensen

  6. It would have been nice to bring this guy in but it’s understandable that he might have wanted to stay closer to home. It’s the guys like the D-Lineman from St. John Bosco that you can’t afford to lose. If you are going to challenge for a national championship, you can’t let out of state schools come into your backyard and take your 5-stars.

    1. He’s from Garland. Waco is a little over an hour from Garland. It’s understandable that he might have wanted to stay closer to home. Some kids are like that. But we can’t let guys like the kid from St. John Bosco go anywheres but USC.

  7. Bottom line USC has to have a good season with a major bowl to get the top players again. Don”t forget we have had 3-4 bad years in a row so we need a good season to get the star recruits to even consider coming even though we now have Lincoln Riley who unfortunately can’t do it all.

  8. Don’t worry, Lincoln Riley will get linemen through the transfer portal, who can’t crack the lineup at their current Mountain West Conference schools. Then the fanboys will say ..” all the coaching staff has to do is coach them up” lol 😂

  9. Dave Aranda is to defense what Lincoln Riley is to offense. You can’t blame a guy for doing what’s best for his own interest.I’m sure that’s what the recruiters told this kid. That is precisely why Riley gets so many offensive skill players.Baylor did well in Aranda’s first year so players know something about the program as well.

  10. Recruiting has a very long way to go. The on-field performance of USC this year will do alot to either have players pull away or pile into the program.

Also consider that USC will most likely hit the transfer portal hard for linemen this year.
