USC Notes: Scotty To Arizona State?

Alex Grinch is a candidate for the Arizona State job. Personally I would be surprised if they gave it to someone who has no head-coaching experience unless it was a hot name like Georgia offensive coordinator Todd Monken.

  • Have you bought a $16 Corona at the Coliseum?
  • The announced crowd for the Fresno State game was 67,226. I’d be surprised if there were more than 50,000 at the game.
  • USC nominated Solomon Byrd for Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week. Washington State linebacker Daiyan Henley won it with 13 tackles, 3 sacks and two forced fumbles.
  • Did you see the new USC dance team at the game Saturday? The Cardinal Divas!

  1. I like Grinch and his focus on turnovers, but I snickered at the mention of him for ASU. Kirby Smart won a National Championship at Alabama as DC.

    1. Smart hired by his alma mater Georgia. Grinch’s alma mater is Division 3 Mount Union … which is actually quite impressive. Your path AG is to win first at SC.

      1. Mr. Smith I’m trying to show how by numbers we are on par with some of Pete Carroll turnover plus margin from 2002-2008. In addition how this year team stacks up with those NC teams. Just a little a reminder of what was accomplished: Won 7 consecutive PAC 10 titles. Made 7 consecutive BCS Bowls. Had 7 11 win seasons Finished in Final Poll as top 4 team for 7 consecutive seasons. You stat geeks here it is: Plus turnover margin 50-2 (.962) 47-0 in last 47 games from 04-08. Even turnover margin games 16-2 (869) losses 03 Cal (A Rod) & 06 SUCLA. Minus turnover games 16-5 (.762) 13-5 (722) from 04-08 with minus turnover margin. Overall record 02-08 (82-9) (.901), nine losses by an average of 4 pts. Part of my regular job is to analyze numbers and use to find resource allocation strategies for Risk Management Plan and Project Plan. Those numbers above is the blue print to the CFP based on what I will show in the next blog, which will hopefully be right after. The top part of blog was an article from Jordan Moore called Turnover Time blogged August 26, 2009. Great job J. Moore.

    1. I hear ya Game. I am still holding reservations, but he has worked to jell a unit that never played together before. By game 8 we should know what we have in our DC.

      1. gametv and steve,

I am starting to believe in Grinch. He has had three goal line stands and has stopped two different teams. He was given a broken group and he has worked on them. They are starting to play like a team. The weakness is stopping the run, once in awhile. But he does adjust and brings in lbers by blizting to help stop the run. The defense is a lot better in tackling and being discplined. Not too many stupid mistakes like lates hits, hitting out of bounds, or unsportsman like conduct antics. I will wait and see what he does this year and if he is here next year, i will give him next year as well.

  2. It’s nice to have Grinch generate interest, but I doubt he’ll jump ship during the season. The current trend of firing coaches 2 games in, has the rumor mill in double overtime. The problem isn’t buying out his current contract, it’s supplying him with the talent he has amassed at USC. Only a conceited boob thinks they can win with the team they’re being recruited to. Ed Orgeron is the rumor in going to start.

      1. You are right, but that’s my rumor and I’m sticking to it. My rumor is as valid as Scott’s. The last I saw of Ed O. he was in L.A. again he’s pretty much a mess for this season. I assume he has to stay out for the remaining time of his contract, but I don’t know.

    1. Trojan4Life, I am a little hesitant to agree, but a slightly more modest uniform would definitely be an improvement.

Some of the diversity stuff can be overbearing. But IMHO this addition is a good thing, as long as featured time is spread among all groups, including visiting marching/pep bands.

  3. Grinch inherited a complete dumpster fire of a defense. I think USC was ranked around 100th last year in scoring D, this year they are somewhere in the 30s ranking. Takeaways are obviously much better this year. Hard to say anybody could do a lot better than he has with the personnel he was given. Give him time, see if they can come together.

    1. We seem to forget USC had a coach that did more damage to the program than any NCAA probation death penalty could ever do. Due to the exodus of some CH players, they’re having to play some players that may not be ready to play.

    2. Hey 67, how much time you think he needs. I would say all of next year to show what he can do with what he recruits either LOI or portal. The portal is really going to be a wild wild west this year.

      1. Steve, I agree. He needs to have time to bring in his own guys. There are portal guys, frosh guys, a few guys from last year, put together into a totally new defense. So far they are looking better than I thought they would this early in the season.

      2. steve and 1967,

I would give him at least two years. he needs dlinemen. They usually take around a year or so to develop. lbers are doing well and he gets a few more, then the process of rebuilding has started.

      1. Infamous is right. Fired from pretty much every job he had. As far as I know, he hasn’t coached since he got sacked in ’19 by USC.

  4. We had some great plays on defense. We also had some things to work on. Fresno State had some excellent defensive backs. We need to work on our recognition and also wrapping up to make sure when we tackle. The defensive backs have to continue to work on their technique. Keep a clock in their heads and sense when to expect the ball. When the receiver looks, he’ll tell them exactly where the ball is and they need to learn how to read that

  5. V’s on stickers; a quarterback going under center to take a snap; Cardinal Divas and the games are too loud. Plus, the food is crazy expensive. Welcome to capitalism. This ain’t the Clay Helton Trojans and everything is geared towards the students. USC has always been tacky. College football has been tacky. As long as the games get played, that’s what the focus will remain. Those towel wavers do look preposterous.
