Lincoln Riley said this morning wide receiver Gary Bryant plans to redshirt.
I’ve been noting the lack of opportunities for players like Bryant and Terrell Bynum through the first three games and this is a result: Bryant went from starting last year to barely playing this year.
It’s the Jordan Addison Show this season.
But here’s the thing: Riley is going to hit the transfer portal again next season so what happens if he lands another star wide receiver?
Doesn’t matter to Bryant if Reilly hits the portal. Bryant is gone. He will hit the portal. Too bad. I thought he was a good player.

I agree with you. …..Smart move to redshirt, hit the portal, and transfer to a program that can use his skillset immediately.
Velus Jones was another guy in a similar situation. He transferred out for a better opportunity and ended up going in the 3rd round to the Chicago Bears

Gary Bryant is a great kid, but not on the same level as the starters. We always heard about his great speed and rarely if ever saw it. Riley is gonna do what he is gonna do and Bryant will have to figure out whether he can improve his game or take it elsewhere. Perhaps he and Foreman can go together.

I was never convinced that Bryant was more than good. After all, once Drake went down last year, the team didnt have a star receiver. He had his chance. The USC receiver room will be stacked with talent next year as well. I really think that Kyron Ware and CJ Williams are going to push into the rotation by year end and be really great receivers next year. Zachariah Branch and Makai Lemon are also coming in, along with that tall receiver – I forget the name. CJ, Branch and Lemon are all special receivers.
So I wish Gary Bryant best wishes and hope he does great at any program that doesnt compete with USC.

I think he has punted 4 times? He has placed two inside the 5 yard line.

Speaking of punters…..We need someone who will kick it out of the end zone on kick offs and maybe place it in a spot where they will have to make a fair catch on punts. We don’t have a special teams coach and I really think that we are going to get hurt sooner or later on those punt and kickoff returns.

I would say that losing an outstanding player because he is not getting playing time because there are other greater outstanding players ahead of him is a good problem to have.

This week will tell a lot. If they can go down to Corvallis and beat a good OSU team in their house, that will be very impressive. If they beat OSU, will the next test be WSU? I don’t know. We’ll know more about WSU this week when they play Oregon at Wasu. The big test will be Utah at Utah. If they can manage to go down to Utah(in possibly inclement weather) and beat Utah, then this team is for real and the sky is the limit and I will backtrack on my statement that this is a rebuilding year.

Riley playing non-transfers at other positions, so he’s not playing favorites (as was the previous coach’s wont). Redshirt, transfer … the world is your oyster. Bryce Butler didn’t do anything at USC and transferred and he ended playing in the NFL for five years.

Here’s another guy who wasn’t given a medical release to return to playing football. So he transferred out to Georgia
Jarvis Jones – He played college football for the University of Georgia, and was recognized as a consensus All-American twice. He was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the first round of the 2013 NFL Draft, playing for them for four seasons before retiring following a short stint with the Arizona Cardinals in 2017.

Just goes to show you that SC is at a slight disadvantage even though they have other advantages that the other schools don’t have. One disadvantage is the fact that not every player can qualify academically to enter SC. SC was the dream team for Vontaze Burfict. He wanted to go to SC all of his life. He committed early in his high school career. But then he took a few visits to the Arizona schools and they convinced him that he was never going to qualify for USC academically. So he went to ASU. Then there were the people like Jarvis Jones who could play at just about any school in the country but not at SC because our medical team wouldn’t let him. There’s been others like that(the Armstead kid about 10 years ago). Then there is the Student conduct committees run by a bunch of Feminazi men hating women who will kick you out of school if you look cross-eyed at someone.

Thank goodness Burfict ended up at ASU. We need guys who are the edge of being thugs, without actually being thugs.

We knew when LR came in big changes would happen. The guys that stuck around had to realize they could get upstaged by new guys coming in. Bryant and Ford are two examples. Pretty good players but not quite as good as the starters. If their life is all about football by all means transfer, but if they want a quality degree and all that goes with it, stick around. I doubt either are nfl caliber anyway, so I hope they make sound decisions.

Every player at USC is learning alot and getting pushed to get better. I imagine that when Ford and Bryant look at the young talent and incoming talent from Kyron, CJ, Makai and Branch, they realize that it makes more sense for USC to transition from their top 3 receivers this year, straight to the younger players. So they are trapped in the middle, being older, but not quite good enough to get playing time.
But they are getting developed and will find new homes.

One more thought. If you have a Biletnikoff winner, you simply must feed him the ball alot and make sure he gets stats to go first in the NFL draft. That will help your recruiting in the future.
