USC Saturday Buzz: Look Who Showed Up To East L.A. Classic

There was quite a crowd at the Coliseum last night for the Roosevelt-Garfield game. Officially, it was listed as 27,100 but it looked even bigger. Definitely more people than at the USC-Arizona game (and maybe others last season). And definitely more enthustiastic than last season.

  • Meanwhile, check out who snuck into the right side of the below photo. It’s former USC and Roosevelt tailback Mike Garrett. I wonder when he last visited the Coliseum?

    1. George–

This week SC has a bye
Worse ‘can happen is a tie
Last week was a sad bye-bye (to championship hopes)
Filled with cry, I almost died
‘Cause we tried but could not pry
Utah Utes from their hot fry
So I say that it’s no lie
As I question, “Why oh Why?”

Like I said, those two programs are crap.

  1. Be honest, did you do this story just so you could criticize the USC/ Arizona attendance. I think you will do about anything to criticize the Trojans.

Scott Thought Bubble: “Lots of people for this high school game. Cool. I’ll say it’s a bigger crowd than my own estimate of the Arizona crowd. It’ll make fans USC sad.”

  2. Ken, I believe Scott’s thought process goes something like this, he starts off with a positive thought but then he starts spinning off negative corollaries,
“Wow, what a great City game and that is an impressive crowd for a high school game. Wait a minute, that crowd exceeds last year’s SC-Arizona game, I just gotta throw that in the mix”

They say great minds think alike, but so do stupid minds. But yes, let’s play swords, let me use yours to check my tonsils first, and while I’m in there I’ll check for cavities too.

  4. It’s no coincidence USC and UCLA struggled (in sports) as soon as high school football in L. A. City went down in quality. The Southern Section is corrupt and schools avoid competition. The CIF is at best a wannabe NCAA operation, filled with idiots who try to work for the Pac 12. That’s why you have a guy like Korey Freeman or Josh Falo or-I could go on and list all the Southern Section players who are struggling but that’s not on the kids but the adults who let that happen.

but who needed sleep with that adrenaline-needle infused in us
Awakening to a first day of Trial I feel as if my foot is asleep only all over, those scary-hairy Trial moments causes one to exclaim, “What a feeling, deep inside of you”

Anyway, I digress, what was the subject?– Oh right, food, which if not handled correctly can negatively reduce your mental sharpness after lunch, in Trial my ‘suit is a bit of fruit

      3. Michael, within Scottie’s mega-organization, there are some unpaid interns who just want a line item on their resume showing that they worked for Scottie, then there are the rainmakers like yourself. One of the high-level partners at Goldman-Sachs is a USC grad and told Scottie he could have Ed on loan for a while.

My understanding is that Scottie charges owns, tebow, and the fake guy a monthly service fee. And we all thought they got on here just because Scottie is still using HTML code from the 1990s that a 3-year-old could hack.

    1. Are we sure that’s what we want? Does that work out best for us in terms of getting to the Pac 12 Championship? [Sincere question —cuz I haven’t done the calculations]……

      1. IT WOULD HELP US IF THE DUCKS DROPPED TWO

        AND WE WIN OUT

THEN WE SHOULD BE IN HAVING TIE BREAK OVER THE RUINS

        STILL
ITS IMPOSSIBLE TO ROOT FOR EFFING RUINS

IT ALSO HELPS IF SOMEONE BEATS THE UTES AND WE WIN OUT

IN THAT CASE ITS US AND THE DUCKS UNLESS DUCKS COLLAPSE

        Liked by 2 people

      2. I have yet to do the calculations also. I do know from a betting angle, it’s hard to beat the same team twice, assuming we both make it to the championship game.

Also, a blowout would place a muzzle on the ruin’s cockiness.

      3. Pardon my wonk….

Looking at Utah’s schedule, their only possible/probable loss AT Oregon. If Utah wins out, they likely end up in Las Vegas. It’s a nice drive from SLC to Vegas too.

Looking at UCLA’s schedule, they have two possible losses–at Oregon and at home vs USC. If they split those two, they probably go to Vegas.

So I hate to root for Oregon to run the Pac table and end up in Vegas, but I think it is the smart choice. They have the Huskies at home also.
Ore plays UW, UCLA, and Utah all at home. Good schedule for them.

So, for USC to go to Vegas they need to run the table and get some help. The tie-breaker could go against the Trojans this year, given the loss to Utah.

I don’t know much about the Ducks, but they should beat Utah in Eugene.

    2. I stated earlier in the week how tough the choice is.

But as Pasadena & I agreed, it’s just too damn hard to root for the Ruins! We’ll get to the P12 game some way or another.

      1. Allegiant stadium is an awesome environment for a football game. With USC playing there it will enhance the experience.

        (fingers crossed)

If you make it to the game, we will have to draw up a “peace treaty”

  6. Always a good day when ucla loses, though on the other hand, it would be great to see the “battle for the city” be relevant again, and have usc smoke an undefeated ucla team.

Here is a great compendium of the rivalry. Tons of great footage and a couple of minutes in the video, slow motion of the Affholter catch to clarify any doubt he had possession:

  7. San Jose State football player Camdan McWright died Friday morning in a traffic crash when he was hit by a school bus while riding an electric scooter. He was 18 years old. McWright was a freshman running back from Panorama City, where he was twice named the MVP of his high school league. He had three carries for 6 yards this year for the Spartans.

Such a bummer. But scooters & skateboarders fly off of corners into crosswalks as if they have the right-of-way, when they do not.

Bus driver has to feel horrible.

    2. So true that the motorized “pedestrians” give little thought to their own safety while sometimes taking risks they would never otherwise take. But over 95% of California drivers constantly illegally tailgate cars in front of them and most unsafely speed as if they are in a hurry (a real one). So I bet the bus driver was in a “hurry” and presto…

  8. Oregon and UCLA both look very hard to stop. Excellent execution. Mobile QBs. Great running backs.

USC better really improve over the next couple weeks. The USC offense needs to get alot better at execution because either of these games might be a shootout where you have to score nearly every possession. Bo Nix looks very good, better than DTR so far.

Oregon has so many players that should have been at USC – Troy Franklin just scorched the UCLA defense twice. More pain from the good ole Helton years.

If Oregon wins against UCLA, then we need them to beat Utah.

  9. Kyle Whittingham was interviewed recently and said that the top 25 teams in the future would be identical to the top 25 NIL programs. He says recruiting is 80% of winning.

So I ask, is USC’s NIL strategy smart? They have attacked any collective that is not managed by the university. So now SBR has closed. This is just stupid.

USC recently lost a LB recruit and I wonder if it is related to the SBR closure. Top players want to know that a university is serious about NIL and USC’s NIL strategy will be limited by a lack of an outside NIL.

This is probably a Folt thing. She seems to hate the USC alum. Well, we hate you too Carol.
