USC-UCLA Morning Buzz: First Team To 60 Wins

It seems like all the good Crosstown Rivalry quotes are coming from UCLA this week.

Quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson said UCLA wants to break 60 points vs. USC. Did Thompson-Robinson say if that would be enough to win the game?

I’m going 63-62, someone.

UCLA ranks 9th in the Pac-12 in pass defense. USC ranks 8th in rush defense.

  • USC is ranked No. 7 in the College Football Playoff rankings. It’s hilarious that some fans are now saying they don’t want the Trojans to make the CFP Final Four because it would be too difficult. Isn’t the whole point of being a Trojan that you want to compete to be the best?
  • USC defeated Vermont, 59-57, at the Galen Center on Tuesday night before 1,838. Vermont lost to Cal State Fullerton, 94-85, on Sunday.

The culprit again for the Trojans was 3-point shooting: USC was 3 for 16. Drew Peterson led USC with 20 points.

  • Isaiah Collier, who is a consensus top-five player in the nation, will announce his college choice today. USC, Michigan and Cincinnati are the finalists for the point guard from Marietta, Ga.
  • This wasn’t a great season for kick off times at the Coliseum. The earliest kick off was the season-opener vs. Rice at 3 p.m. Naturally that was the hottest day of the season.

(The GB Packers had famously whipped the AFL Chiefs and Raiders the two previous years)

        Then he delivered.

…I guess it’s up to DTR to deliver.

We talk about the NFL-heading sucla runner but I still recall writing about the sucla quarterback a couple of years ago as being “electrifying” as a runner, so there is also that for SC to try to contain

      2. I like the way you think, bro’ and my 2-cents worth is that I am assuming for now that SC runs the table and brings home the possibility of then being voted into the
Final-4 which at season’s end probably looks like this (if SC wins out)
        Georgia
        Ohio St or Michigan
        TCU (if undefeated)
        SC
        Tennessee
        Ohio St or Michigan
        Alabama
        Clemson
        LSU

The Trojans nose out bias-favored Tennessee for having played one game more
But Georgia must beat LSU (highly likely) and
loser of Ohio St-Michigan is best once-beaten team in the field and may only fall to 4
(highly unlikely in order to avoid a possible rematch a week later)

Point is this sucla game is small potatoes compared to what SC ultimately wants
which is an invite to the ‘Final-4’ and a shot at the National Title whether Troy is ready or not

  4. My rivalry-week contribution for today:

    A tale of two coaches…

Chip was a football genius…from U New Hampshire. A football powerhouse, no doubt. He is certainly clever. His “fast-break”
offense was designed to allow inferior FB talent (as Oregon is famous
for signing) to compete against better players and better programs by
running simple (mostly option) plays quickly to prevent the defense from organizing a response (either via substitution or communication).
The home field advantage was key in Eugene for this type of offense.
In his last few years he added a few defenders, but defense was never relevant. Versus weak competition on the road he’d get a win. Versus strong competition at home he often won. Once he got into a neutral environment versus a team with O and D, he was sure to lose.
He knew the system would implode, so he took it to the NFL and indeed, better players and better coaches showed him to be “not a genius.” A good gimmick guy–exposed by the NFL to not be a good coach.

A few talented Dux had some success in the NFL. Jonathan Stewart did pretty well. Whom else? Marriota? WR/TE? I don’t think he had anything to do with Herbert. Generally, his teams and players racked up a lot of gaudy stats in the Pac 12 and then took their UO education (or relative lack thereof) and went out into the World–likely unprepared.

I think he subverted the rules of College Football and is a “cheater.”

  5. I think Riley is actually a real smart person and coach.
I suspect he’s a great motivator and great organizer and a great leader.

His record at OU runs about 10 wins in a bad year and 11 wins in a good year. After developing a great offense, he was methodically working on the OU defense when he left for a better future for himself and his family.

So many of his WR and QBs and RB’s and linemen are succeeding in the NFL. He signs good talent and develops good talent into NFL ready players.

    Big difference.

      1. Michael,

Just imagine another John Mckay with the “Aw shucks”, attitude by Riley. A lot more coy than McKay as well. The only thing Riley has to do is take the attiude Mckay had about defense and that is, go get the ball. If Riley can build a defense then SC could be real good.

        Liked by 1 person

    2. I liken Wiley when talking to his players in a group as having the same easy natural confident ‘voice’ that McKay and Robinson had with the extroverted Carroll voice being a bit louder than the others. When the entire team is riveted by what their Coach is saying you know you have a leader

In contrast and tied-in with the poster writing that SC fans had a loser mentality, well it’s true because the Trojans were losers led by a man who should have been a used-car salesman not a leader of young men

  6. USC defense is ranked #87 in college football currently.

Says a lot about coaching on the defensive side considering non-perennial powers with equal to greater competition are much better. They do not have the players USC has now.

    1. …the FPI computer has USC at #77 defense.
Either number is out of 128 defenses, so it is definitely not stellar.

The computer takes into account the offense’s performance versus other teams and compares accordingly. USC has played against 4 or 5 of the top 20 offenses in the country, so one would suspect that the defensive performance would be skewed by that competition.

When the D was at full strength, it was rated mediocre by the computer at about #50.

My goal is to see defensive improvement every year with Grinch.
Say, #40 next year, #20 the following year, etc.

Interestingly, Ohio State had a horrid defense for several years under Ryan Day and has only recently built a good D.

  8. Kelly vs Grinch is going to be interesting to watch. Will USC slant their line and risk exposing Gentry to injury? Or do they play one gap with 5 down, two standing up on the edges? 4 won’t work because UCLA has tackles that can maul anyone USC has on run plays. The Trojans are stronger than they were last year though inside on defense. Will it be slants and safeties come down? Or one gap with CB’s playing hard run support? Can’t wait to see!

  9. I always wonder what is meant by “some fans” or “a coach” when written as fact. I wrote a paper for my college class once, I quoted a fictional Dr. Mark Travis (my brother’s first and middle name). The Lady who helped me by typing my paper asked who the Dr. was and I admitted that I was using a fictitious name to present my viewpoint. She refused to type the paper as written and inserted “a doctor” in its place. I got a D on the paper and the reason was that simple change. The instructor’s note said everything was correct except, I didn’t quote a person, I used a title to lend credibility to my statement. I learned to use word processing programs after that.
My point is “some fans” is too generic to hold any meaningful insight. I can’t imagine any fan not wanting their team to get into the playoffs. This isn’t Fansville in a Dr. Pepper commercial, talk to real people (sans trolls) about real people, because some people don’t believe some people.

      1. To me, most of the commercials I see on TV are just plain stupid and silly, but some of them are pretty good. But from the companies standpoint, even some of the ones that are really funny don’t make it clear what the commercial is promoting. I’ve seen really good commercials but if you asked me what was the product that they are promoting, I couldn’t tell you. Not so with these Dr. Pepper commercials.

What keeps USC out is beating the Irish at home makes Notre Dame a very pedestrian 4 loss team (thanks, Stanford) and diminishes both teams. Clemson being trash doesn’t offer any points as well.

  13. Getting back to the game, which I may presume is the primary subject of this section, I see some comments about the defensive strategy that Grinch may try to use. 4 down linemen won’t work against UCLA because they use two tight ends alot. You can use 4 down if your in nickel or dime but Chardonnay can run for 15+ to get a first down. Also, man to man presents a problem because the qb is mobile and will out run or make defenders miss. Put the ego aside and recognize that UCLA will have the best offensive line that USC will face. Better than Notre Dame. You have to crowd the line of scrimmage, play zones and blitz safeties and your best tacklers to minimize the damage. Grinch is a gambler, so setup Chip Kelly and sneak a new zone blitz to get off of third downs and fourth downs. UCLA will be desperate to beat USC with their season being over.
