If You Can’t Develop Corners, Go To The Portal

Arizona cornerback Christian RolandWallace committed to USC on Sunday night. I said on Wednesday I expected USC to make a play for the Palmdale native.

I wouldn’t put him on the same level as Mekhi Blackmon a year ago but he is definitely going to improve the secondary.

Which begs this question? What exactly is Donte Willams doing? He’s been recruiting cornerbacks for three years now. These are his guys. And he’s had to go to the portal the past 2 seasons to get a No. 1 cornerback?

Is Williams developing anyone? Is anyone getting better? Did you think the secondary improved this season? I didn’t.

They couldn’t even handle Cal’s offense. How will they handle a College Football Playoff participant?

Lincoln Riley really needs to do an evaluation of what he’s getting from his coaches. At least in the secondary.

    1. On the money, Ed.
Christian Roland-Wallace, btw, plays smart football. He’s got very good speed [4.4 -4.5] and he’s always fighting the receiver for the interception without interfering.

      1. If Jackson wins the starting position then he should start. But we shouldn’t base it on what he did in high school. If we are going to do that, then Korey Foreman should be starting every game.

Do you think Vorhees will repay Caleb for all those steaks and slices of pizza by protecting him in the Cotton Bowl?

YEAH JACKSON HAS TO EARN IT
        HOPE HE CAN

RE VORHEES I GUESS HE DIDNT PLAY SO HE COULD PROTECT-HIS NFL RANK

        I KNOW OTHERS DO THIS
BUT IF HE SAT OUT FOR THAT REASON ONLY I WOULD KICK HIS ASS THE HELL OFF THE TEAM AND I WOULD DO IT YESTERDAY

      4. That’s the old way of doing things and probably the right way. There should be some loyalty to your team. Otherwise, stop with all this talk about there being a brotherhood among team members.. If you are going to leave your team when they really need you, that’s not brotherhood…..that’s “ME”hood.

  2. Why complain about recruiting players who have verified experience, which are not random stars awarded by biased local reports? The portal is a two edged sword. If you don’t take advantage of a supply someone else will. I am not as bullish on Donte Williams as a few years ago. His performance has not kept up with his press clippings, which makes my point. Football is a combination of experience versus expectations. (That entire sentence was generated by predictive text)

      1. George,
When I was at the City Attorney’s Office the former City Editor of the Daily News [who had become our press liaison] told me to stop calling press conferences to promote myself or he would kill me with a chair [I still loved the guy & miss him] and when I interviewed with the Daily News for their City Attorney endorsement I got stuck with [what seemed to me] a right wing moron…who fucked me over in an editorial.
Point of Information….I never purchased a Daily News [but I read other people’s …. I always enjoyed Scott’s take on things & wondered how a guy like him managed to exist at such a fucked up newspaper]…

  5. This should be Grinch’s last year. No need to prolong misery like we did with Helton. You only get a short window with head coaches like Riley as they leave for greener pastures. No need to expend the years with Grinch.

  6. If the DB’s are Dontes’ then how is Bullock an award winner. How is Blackmon an award winner? Did Donte have anything to do with that? What USC has are good DBs but for the most part lack speed. This is what Riley is going after, more speed.

  7. All things decline over time even the prowess of AL football – note the latest ‘hit the silk’ from Tuscaloosa former CB Khyree Jackson.

The Sugar Bowl is the most important game for the immediate future of AL dominance. Saban has had a well deserved respect for what he has accomplished since he arrived there in 2007. Unmatched in such a short period of time – 6 NCs in 14 years. It does look like he wants to finish on top again – the reality may very well be he would have been better served departing after last year.

This AL starter departure for OR is telling

No mention of the usc bball team beating #19 ranked Auburn yesterday. If you dish out negativity then you gotta give praise for a job well done.

  9. Is it possible that USC is bringing in transfer defensive backs to replace the ones that have done nothing and will announce their entrance into the portal soon? For example, Otey has done nothing while at SC. Same with Williams.

  10. Fast guys who can’t play are meaningless. How many pass breakups and interceptions did the defense make? Why expect a mediocre team with inexperienced db’s to play like Utah? Unless this team gets a lockdown corner in the transfer portal, they will need a better pass rush to shut down offenses next season.

Wolf blames Williams out of personal bias. Look how he lavished praise on Pete Carroll to embarrass Helton or criticize Riley. Clearly Wolf failed Philosophy at USC or he was asleep when they taught logic in class.
