USC president Carol Folt announced today that Cromwell Field will now be known as Allyson Felix Field.
Of course, Folt did not actually mention “Cromwell Field” because it is politically incorrect given the anti-semitic background of Dean Cromwell.
REACTION: Although the renaming of Cromwell Field is overdue, I’m not in favor of naming it after Felix.
Why? She NEVER competed for USC!
There are plenty of Olympians in USC history who actually competed for the Trojan track and field team. Unlike Felix.
Although Felix has won 11 Olympics medals, she has only one gold medal in an individual event (gold medal, 200 meters, London 2012).
She’s won six gold medals in relays. She’s won three silver medals in individual events. She won a bronze in Tokyo in the 400 meters.
Nothing wrong with that. But USC has had track athletes who won two individual gold medals.
Again, the larger issue is she never competed for USC. But I’m going to be in the minority on this one.
I don’t know about being in the minority, Scott. I agree with you 100%.

1. She earned a Degree from USC, so she is a very distinguished Alumnus.
2. Had NIL been in place, she would have competed but had to turn pro to have Adidas pay her tuition and expenses.
3. The problem I have with this is it is likely that #1 and #2 had absolutely nothing to do with the decision.

She’s not an alumnus, she’s an alumna. Unless she’s secretly male, or used to be.

True, she did not run track but she represented the university with class and dignity while attended SCHOOL at USC and besides her Olympic accomplishments, she was a ten time medalist in nationals, advocated for women and issues facing athletes of color in and outside sports including unfair contract negotiations, launching a childcare initiative for pregnant mothers who are unfairly targeted by corporations (especially sports) in not being paid while they are pregnant. She has changed that landscape to now companies like Nike and other athletics apparel are more progressive about aiding pregnant women and not penalizing them on their pregnancy. It’s not always about money and whether she ran track at USC. She attended SC with an education that probably plays into actually receiving a degree from a highly regarded institution of learning and using that education in her on and off the field endeavors. And Cromwell? Don’t get me started about his legacy. It’s disgusting..

Another reason to leave USC in the rearview mirror. Children see the world as black and white. Adults should aspire to understand that the lives of individuals are complex, to say the least.
In this instance, Cromwell’s name was attached to the field due to his contributions to the university. If he was an anti-Semite and he DID anti-Semitic things, it still may or may not warrant the removal of his name, if the bad deeds outweighed the good. At the very least, his legacy might stand for something tinged with bad and that’s important for people to understand because no one is “all good”.
As a Jew who regularly mustered, drilled and exercised around that track in the early 90s, there wasn’t a moment that I feared for my life because the name of the field was Cromwell. But, my fears arise when we can summarily erase people from the public memory. Socialists have a penchant for revising history. And after they’re done with removing statues, erasing people from photos and renaming things of social import, they start to get an itch to erase other things….

Socialist aren’t the only group of people who like to revise or hide contributions. This country has a history of erasing contributions. All history should be restored and told with proper context. If you want to leave SC in the “rear view mirror” then go.

You seem to be very focused on Carol Folt’s tenure per PROC students. How is that any different than what Nikias did? In fact why is Nikias’ tenure never examined for his giving us Carol Folt? As to ‘Queen Carol’ I believe Emperor Nick still is a ‘presence’ on the campus as a ‘lecturer’. He truly raised an enormous amount of money but he also prevailed as unapproachable if bad news was the issue.

Scooter,
One problem is that no one is respecting the history of the decision on why they selected Cromwell for the name. You erase history instantly. No one will ask about the past. they will only go as far back as the new name. Cromwell might have bad history to it, but that is history itself. Respect it.

When they eventually drop the first name, as we all did with Cromwell, new students will think it refers to Felix Chevrolet! Not a joke.

The first player in the NBA to hit a 3 pointer…
Former NBA champion player and coach Chris Ford, who rose to prominence during his time with the Boston Celtics, has died at the age of 74, his family announced.
Ford played for the Celtics from 1978-1982 and won a title with the team in 1981.
After he retired, he transitioned to coaching and worked as Boston’s assistant coach for seven seasons. He helped guide the Celtics to championships in 1984 and 1986 during his time as an assistant coach under coach K.C. Jones.
In 1990, he was named the Celtics head coach, a position he held until 1995.

Are you really ready to face the sins of the past? Would you accept the complete collapse of USC football if athletes were to start boycotting your beloved school on moral grounds? Are there better choices? Obviously. Can you think of another graduate who resembles a group of students who are more marginalized or ignored? Students who find a way to complete their education without the benefit of money handshakes, gifts and support from family? Who couldn’t run for her university because she had to choose between her career or minimal financial support? Would any of you be able to accomplish half of what she did? How many other buildings are named after women? Why not keep condoning morally corrupt men because they made a name off of the university? Let’s allow the lie to live. Allyson Felix shows what perseverance is. And Carol wants to show her appreciation.

Almost Michael, but not quite– With the Under-40 crowd you have to be riveting in the story-telling or they will tune you out after 10-seconds of reading. Got to look for the humor to hold their attention
Back to Cromwell, I am sure the SC ‘Court of Opinion’ vetted Cromwell thoroughly (or not), analyzing Cromwell’s alleged acts and words directed at Jewish people and judging them in the context of the times Cromwell lived in when not only Jewish prejudice prevailed but Catholic persecution as well as Irish immigrants quickly discovered.

Agreed that Allison Felix is an incredibly accomplished USC alum, but not one who ever earned an athletic letter running for the Lady Trojans (can we still say “lady”?).
But then again, Brian Kennedy never played football at USC and his name stands next to Howard Jones on the football practice ‘placed that has grass and serves as the site for preparing to play football games’ (since the word “field” can no longer be uttered as it is an emotional trigger for some in today’s society).
Now, get an aerial camera and capture athletes running on this newly named track and ensure the iconic local neighborhood landmark is seen in the northwest corner of the photo…and call it “Felix Field adjacent to Felix Chevrolet!”
