    1. I don’t know Ed, SC’s offense was not too shabby or offensive last year despite forgetting they had Tight-Ends, but you got it right about the lack of linesmen on the other side of the ball, the defense,
and good defensive linesmen come in handy whenever your quarterback gets hurt and you cannot get your usual allotment of points

  2. Coaching matters but so does talent. I always say I could have coached Lew Alcindor– “Hey, Lew, here is the ball, now go out there and do your stuff”

    Players invited to the Combine–
    Alabama 13
    Georgia 12
    Michigan 9
    LSU 9
    TCU 9
    Florida 9
    Ohio St 8
    Clemson 8
    USC Trojans 5

See a trend here, it looks as if SC has some catching up to do

Moreover, I count 309 players having been chosen to have a “chance” at getting an NFL contract which not all of these 309 are going to get.
Figure the First 3-Rounds or about 100-players would be assured of some kind of contract, but the next 100 chosen in Rounds 4-6 have no assurances at all.

So out of about 100 football schools having about 80 players each, or 8000, only 100 to maybe 150 will see any NFL money, or less than a 2% chance. And yet I bet 100% of these footballers coming out of high school as the best in their league believe they are pro-material.
    — Such a travesty unless they take advantage of the education opportunity afforded them

  3. With regard to the questions of whether it is players or coaching that explains why USC’s defense and special team struggled so much this past year, the argument can be made that it was “not enough good players,” as the following teams were inferior or equal to USC and sent as many players or more to the combine: Arkansas (5), Auburn (6), Cincinnati (6) Florida (9), Iowa (5), Louisville (5), LSU (9) Maryland (7), Ole Miss (5), Oklahoma (7), Penn State (7), Pitt (6), Purdue (5), South Carolina (5), Tennessee (7), and Texas (5). Even Stanford sent almost as many players to the combine (4)! By the same reckoning, “poor coaching” would explain the losses to Utah (4) and especially Tulane (2). Both coaching and players played a role in the disappointing performance of those units. Given that Helton left a thin cupboard of players, I place more burden on the lack of elite players vs. poor schemes. Call it 65% players and 35% coaching.

    1. Agreed Kahlua. Helton left a thin cupboard of returning players. And the number was not 5, it was 2 – Tuli and Vorhees. The other 3 – Addison, Dye, and Blackmon were transfers. If not for Caleb and the other transfers, USC would have had another losing season last year.

I have said numerous times, you can be the best coach with the best schemes money can buy, but if the talent you have to work with is failing to make the plays in the given situation, that’s on the player, not the coaching.

We have seen play after play all season where a player was in a position to make a stop but whiffed at the point of attack. The coach isn’t making the tackle the player is.

  4. Let’s see here, USC is 10-1 with a healthy Travis Dye, Andrew Vorhees and Bobby Haskins. With two of those 3 available, they ended the season 1-2 with a blown chance in the Cotton Bowl and major losses in leadership on both sides of the ball.

Seems to me that leadership is the key to success for the Trojans.

  5. Five! That’s not very many. There were 2 schools with 10 or more and 5 schools with 9 or more. It just shows how Clay Helton left the cabinet clean with his 2 terrible last years of recruiting.

  6. The coaches stayed with bad players for too long on both offense and defense. Remember how poor young Murphy was steamrolled in the 4th quarter at the Cotton Bowl? Monheim got his lunch money taken away as well in that game, especially after Haskins left the game.

Does anyone trust Grinch? Is his scheme really that awesome? Is it at Georgia’s level? Will it perform all season with more talent? Only against weaker teams.

    1. We all kinda knew Scott was right when he said, with Grinch at the helm on defense, USC was gonna be involved in a bunch of 63-62 shootouts….
