The Friday USC Column Supplement

Here’s a color photo of the 1969 USC-UCLA game as the Trojans recovered a fumble and another look at that nice face mask worn by linebacker Greg Slough (53).

No. 72 is Al Cowlings and No. 71 is Willard Scott.

  • This is the process a student had to go through in 1948 to buy an activity book, which included a season ticket to the football games. Check out item No. 4. Quite a hoop to jump through.
  • By the way, photographer Art Waldinger claimed he could take 43 shots a minute and took more than 2,000 students’ photos two days before the 1948 season-opener vs. Utah.

Scalpers used to show up to try and buy an activity book until they saw Waldinger was taking photos of the purchaser.

  • Last Friday, I included the video of the 1970 Rose Bowl between USC and Michigan. Here’s Trojan QB Jimmy Jones during the game.

      1. Sheesh, the game last night was a big step backwards. Vincent has a huge impact when he is in the game. But with his heart condition, he is only playing 10-15 minutes per game. When he is in there, the opposing team simply doesn’t go to the hoop. I would love to see the plus/minus when he is versus when he isn’t. In any case, so glad that the young man is able to play a bit. Every minute is a blessing for him (and USC).

  1. I’m looking at the Jimmy Jones photo —with what appears to be a lot of grass in front of him. I hope Coach Riley has asked Caleb not to make for the sideline and try to out-sprint everybody to the end zone if he sees that much grass in front of him this season. Get the first down and slide. No more hammies.

    1. Ha! That is EXACTLY —and I mean EXACTLY —- the way the question should be prefaced at Joe’s Contempt of Congress Hearing: “Joe, we KNOW you didn’t think of this…. ” [And then, looking around the hearing room and locating Susan Rice: “Susan!”]……

With another memorable post. Not much different from the last post. Keeping it handy on copy and paste.

  2. I don’t care if you talk politics, everybody is welcome their wrong opinion. Anyway it is more fun to raise hackles of Trojans than trolls. For instance the reason my vote didn’t count is because the deep state colluded with post office to eliminate votes that looked suspiciously Republican. But since they found classified documents in a house being built by Jimmy Carter, the classified documents have been quietly forgotten. And I never discuss Religion or Politics on blogs since a church member stood up during the service and blurted out, “We all need to vote Democcrat, because Jesus certainly would have been a Democrat.” … She left the church when the Anti Christ was elected.

  4. The 5 Biggest Lies Biden told in the State of the Union:

LIE: The most jobs ever created under a president.

Fact: Under Biden’s poor economy, more people are working two jobs. Over 22 million people lost their jobs during the pandemic. It’s people slowly returning to work after the lockdowns that caused the “rise” in jobs.

    LIE: Inflation is falling.

Fact: Biden’s policies and out-of-control spending drove inflation to a 40-year high of 9.1% in June; it’s “fallen” to 6.5%. It was 1.4% when Trump left office.

LIE: The pandemic caused a spike in crime.

Fact: Antifa and BLM radicals destroyed cities and police departments while Democratic mayors encouraged the madness.

LIE: Biden is cracking down on the border and border security.

Fact: The number of encounters under Biden has averaged roughly 189,000 per month, nearly four times higher than during the Trump presidency.
LIE: Debt decreased by $1.7 trillion in two years.

Fact: According to the U.S. Treasury, during Biden’s first two years in office — Jan. 20, 2021, through Jan. 20, 2023 — the federal debt increased by approximately $3.7 trillion.
Just trying to see if Gabby is alive and well.

      1. Lots of people say he is. Lots of people say he isn’t. The issue won’t be settled until a federal court allows a real hearing on the signature verification & chain of custody problems with the mail-in vote. Let ONE of the over 20 Attorneys General from some of our largest states —who have been ruled against on “standing” grounds— present their evidence in district court…. and …after the court rules against him or her…. let’s watch the case go up the system to the Supreme Court…and see what happens. Let’s see how Americans feel about things when they’ve learned that the problem with the mail-in vote is every bit as serious [and more so] than Jimmy Carter said it was way back when.

      2. The MSM went so easy on Dementia Man during his “campaign” (and throughout his first year). Only when his incompetence became impossible to ignore did they start pressing back A LITTLE.

When the Oct 15 2020 debate was cancelled due to Trump’s positive test, there was plenty of time to schedule a makeup date following debate #3 on Oct 22. I believe 45 suggested Oct 29, but Dementia Joe was scared and refused. His team knew the less he spoke, the better his chances.

The weakness he displayed then was noticed by all of our adversaries and is part of the reason we’re now on the verge of WWIII. It has nothing to do with the “rules of engagement”, to which one dimwit often refers.

That sounds like a legal word salad but what actual evidence are you aware of the that was not allowed in court?

      5. FWIW, I don’t agree with Trump that the election was stolen. Could there have been fraud, sure. I also believe if Trump had the chance to steal an election, he would do so in a hot-shit-minute!!
Trump lost the election cuz he can’t control his assholeness. With so many voters on the fence, prior to election, all he had to do is stop saying stupid shit, stay off Twitter and turn down his smug meter.
I voted for him twice but literally can’t stand him. I pray to God, DeSantis rolls him and Trump goes away for good. Wouldn’t mind if he took MTG & Boebert with him.

      6. Inquisitive [if you say so] One:
NO evidence [percipient or expert testimony, affidavits or declarations] has been allowed in any federal court. All federal courts have refused to hold a hearing on the grounds NO ONE — candidates, state attorneys general or citizens –has standing to challenge the results. [If you recall the court found Bush had standing to challenge the results in Florida].

      7. Dear One Way,
I agree to an extent with your Trump remarks. They remind me of Buckley’s explanation of why Nixon was forced to resign: “He wasn’t shown the door over policy…or even high crimes… he was dumped because he was a horse’s ass.”
But DeSantis is not the answer. He’s doing the right things on the domestic front but he’s in the pocket of the weapons suppliers. That’s a smart approach if he wants to out fundraise Trump —but there’s a teeny problem: it will lead to a broader war in Europe. And maybe World War Three.

      8. MG,

Is it possible that the things you mention were not actual evidence but rather partisan declarations lacking real substance?
Also why did William Barr say that all the talk of election fraud was bullshit?
Regarding the situation in Europe you sound like you’re paraphrasing Neville Chamberlain when his course of action actually did lead to a world war.

  5. Scott’s old newspaper (group) runs questions of the week for their letters to the editor column. Posted last Sunday was “Will you watch the State of the Union Speech?”
I wrote and said, “Short answer is NO. The speech is just the head liar telling lies to other liars about the lies told by the previous head liar. I put on a list below an hour long car chase narrated by a guy in a helicopter, the Oscars, Emmys and a Ucla football game.” Anyway I guess they didn’t get many yes answers because the question never appeared in the paper.

  7. Was listening to Mel Kiper Jr and Dari Nowkhah discussing OK and TX move to the SEC in 2024. They discussed the schedules which I believe ‘mirror’ what both USC and Ucla have facing them

As I understand it – Every year 3 same opponents plus 6 conference and 3 misc..

OK For ‘3 same opponents’ TX & OK they play each other just as USC and Ucla shall too. Kiper was discussing OK facing AR and LSU annually etc..

My thoughts – USC already has 2 annual matchups set both ‘The Irish’ and Ucla but for that last one EVERY year good night USC should choose RUTGERS.

Every other year a trip to NYC every year NY media frothing over the hoped for vanquishing of Troy and every other year exposing kids to the largest city in the USA and also imprint on them why LA is better after the shock (like Vegas) where’s off 36 hours in.

The flip side for the kids from back east knowing every other year they have a trip to LA. USC draws eyes regardless but were they to commit to this that matchup would always put all the rest of the Big 10 games on the back burner.

On a state and national level we vote for the lessor of evil. Brandon won because his handlers knew to keep him in the basement. Trump lost because his handlers couldn’t convince him to STFU.
No one likes either of those lads.
