PFF Is At It Again!

I find myself rarely agreeing with Pro Football Focus rankings.

They list Calen Bullock as the top returning safety in the country. I said a year ago Bullock was a rising player at USC and would be a key part of the defense.

But top safety in the country? Did PFF see the tackling in the final two games of the season (example below)? It’s unfair to Bullock to put him atop this list. It creates expectations that cannot be met. And I don’t see how it helps PFF’s credibility.

  1. That Utah tight end had a full head of steam on that play, and outweighs Bullock by about 60 lbs. Hard to fault Bullock on that play.
For the D players who played the full season, Bullock and Tuli were by far the standouts.

    1. …and…besides… I’ve heard rumors that Whittingham was stirring up trouble during pregame warmups by telling his backs and receivers to “run right at USC and see if they got taught how to tackle yet.”

    2. You can fault Bullock on the that play real easily. In that situation the db takes out the feet, never hit a big guy under full steam up high. Bullock knows it too. Eddy Meador was an artist at taking a big guy down alone.

      1. Yes…but I still like the way 67 sticks up for our defensive players…

    1. The best defense, IMHO, is when you have the D-line taking care of the run and hurrying the passer, the LB’s taking care of any run that gets past the LOS and covering the flats and the DB’s covering the secondary. Just a simple defense.
When you have people like Nick Figueroa dropping back into pass coverage, you’re in trouble. He’s not fast enough to cover TE’s and RB’s. Just keep it simple and let the different position groups do what they are best physically able to do. But you must have really good players to just play straight up like that. SC is now in the process of getting those players.

    2. The lack of ability to make a play on the ball or tackle is a product of a player’s talent level, not coaching….. The talent level was poor, outside of a couple players. Helton had some sub-par recruiting classes, especially on the defensive side

      1. Say what you want about CH but he was a good recruiter but, you’re right, the last two classes were not good at all. I think that the recruits just started to see that he was a nice guy but not a great coach which would produce a great team. The great player want to play on a great team.

      2. Mostly, true. But I still think the defense quit on Grinch after Notre Dame. I don’t pretend to know why. I just saw a lotta of our guys not doing any more than brushing up against Utah & Tulane runners and receivers without ‘wrapping & rolling’ to bring ’em down. It was more than “lack of talent”….it seemed more along the lines of “we don’t give a shit.”

  3. The top safeties for 2023?– zzzzz. I may as well recount the top alltime college football coaches according to one publication:
    1 Nick Saban 7 Nationals
2 Bear Bryant at least 4
3 Bobby Bowden 2 at Florida St
    4 Woody Hayes 3
    5. Joe Paterno 2 (but image tarnished by Sandusky)
6 Bud Wilkinson won 47 in a row from 1953-57
    7. Urban Meyer 2 (but another guy with baggage)
    8 Dabo Swinney 2
    9. Barry Switzzer 3 with Oklahoma and a Super Bowl
12, Knute Rockne 3 record was 105-12; dead at 43 in plane crash
    14. Bo Schembechler (spelling) 0 Nationals, .2000 in Rose Bowl
    but a 194-48 record in Big-10
    18. Pete Carroll 2 and Super Bowl (too short a college career to be rated higher)
    21 John Robinson 1
22 Robert Neyland Tennessee 1926-1952 (6 stints in US Army)
5 undefeated seasons; 71 straight quarters surrendering no points
23 John McKay 4 but 26 straight Losses in NFL hurt his image
    26. Bob Stoops (forerunner to Wiley) 3 11-7 vs Texas

  4. Last I checked, he was one of the few safeties who recorded multiple interceptions, that was returning back to the school they played for last season. PFF also doesn’t claim he’s the best ever nor first round pick. It simply states the top rated safety to return to college ball.

    When does spring ball start?

      1. It is like the USC admin, now that the recruiting push has slowed down a little lets see if we can come up with something like what all these other schools who are taking players from us are doing. Maybe Blvd failed because USC let Sosna get away.

        Liked by 1 person

      2. With or without Sosna, I have a hunch Lincoln Riley will end up getting exactly what he wants outta USC in terms of competitive recruiting ….

  5. Wolf forgot to mention that they also named Dorian Singer, Jonah Monheim, and Justin Dedich on their list as top returners at their positions. Oh ya, guess who the #1 returning QB was? CW no less. Wolf cannot disagree with that one. So maybe PFF isn’t so far off.

  6. I havent gone in and graded Bullock on all the plays, but just didnt seem that any player on the USC defense was the best in the nation at their position.

I’m hoping he earns that recognition this year.
