USC Morning Buzz: Deion Sanders Delivers The Truth

You might think Deion Sanders is about flash and hype but find a coach who makes more sense than he does in this video on making players earn jersey numbers.

“We got this new thing now in college football about double numbers,” Sanders said. “If somebody gave you a double number (in the old days), that assured that you wasn’t going to play. That’s how it was, wasn’t it?

“We got kids that ain’t played a snap and you want No. 1. 1?!?

“Now you got a lineman wanting No. 0 and No. 3. If I give a lineman that number, the DB, the receiver or the running back can’t take that big number. So now I got a deficit of numbers. I’m old-school man. I come from the place you got to earn it.”

Can you imagine a USC coach saying this?

Not when Korey Foreman wears No. 0 and freshman Zacariah Branch, who hasn’t played a snap, wears No. 1.

I could listen to Sanders all day.

      1. Yeah, George: NEON DEION.
…But will that translate into “W’s”? And when & if he loses will his team turn on him?

Credit where credit is due. I specifically remember tebowobama calling Foreman overrated coming out of high school.

      2. The Nike camps exposed Kourtney Foreman. Kourtney couldn’t hang when she went up against players his size and bigger, he was getting tossed all over the field like a rag doll in those camps.

The kid doesn’t have any strength, he is easily pushed around. He hit his ceiling as a senior in high school.

  1. I remember when the Lakers hired Magic as their head coach and upon rejecting Magic’s instruction, point guard Nick Van Exel told his coach, “This is OUR time, now!”
-speaking for the younger guys.Deon can get away with it at Colorado – for now. Does he really think that the better players in the league (working NIL deals) are going to go “Old school?” I don’t. Those days (sadly) seem to be over.

    1. Hate to say it —but Deion sounds like he’s WAY more interested in being the Philosopher King of College Football than being a mere coach…..

    2. DeSean Jackson did the same. Wanted #1, but Pete had already promised that to Patrick Turner. It was one of the reasons he headed north to Cal.

      1. Jackson was extremely effective against USC …well, for the one play he was involved in before he was carried off the field….

      2. DeSean Jackson probably wishes he’d picked a different number and played for SC instead of going across the middle against Kevin Ellison. #CoachDoI HaveToGoBackInThere?

  2. If you listen to him closely, Sanders is old school. But because he won at Jackson State doesn’t mean he is a great coach. A lot of people win at that level because the opposing coaches are not that good at that level. Many coaches(like Steve Alford) win big at that level and turn out to be mediocre when they get to the big time. Others win big at that level and turn out to be outstanding coaches when they reach the big time(such as the coaches at Kansas, Kansas State, Washington, Brian Kelley and many others).
I’m not saying Sanders won’t be a great coach. I’m just saying let’s wait and see. He has a charismatic great personality that draws players(especially black players since he is black). But if he doesn’t win, that personality will disintegrate and lose it’s power like the mist that rises from hot coffee and then disappears.
You might say that I have a love-hate relationship with him. I like the guy personally but he may end up being a threat to USC. I had the same feelings about Lou Holtz. As Doctor Lou, I liked him. As coach Lou, I couldn’t stand him.

    1. I don’t think we have to worry about Deion turning into Holtz. Coach Holtz was not only a disciplinarian and a clever motivator —he was a master strategist…..

      2. He also said that USC stands for University of Spoiled Children. That’s why I never liked Coach Holtz. But I did like Doctor Lou

  3. I can see Deion being successful and being old school. There will always be kids that will be susceptible to his type of personality and will come play for him, especially now at a D1 school. Every coach is different and he will build his teams with kids that want to do it his way, just like LR builds his teams.

  4. Enjoyed the interview but never thought of Deion as “old school” He wore gaudy gold jewelry, did touchdown dances, refused to tackle running backs from his corner position, and changed teams like underwear based on who was offering the most money. Hell, how is someone with a Neon Deion nickname old school. You want old school – Lombardi’s 3 yards and a cloud of dust Packers complete with flat top haircuts, Johnny Unitas with his flat top hair and high top cleats, and Mike Ditka telling his team to just beat the hell out of the guy in front of you and we’ll win.

      1. Yes So Cal, Ronnie Lott was old school. So was Jack Youngblood of the Rams. He broke his leg in the NFC championship game and still played in the Super Bowl two weeks later. Rosen bruised his vagina and was out for the season.

      2. You want old school ? Watch the NHL playoffs, you’ll see guys playing with broken legs, hands, wrists, fingers, ribs, separated shoulders, and no one knows about it until they are done playing in the playoffs, those guys are fucking tough.

Clark said that the media attention she received during the trial was “the hell of the trial”, calling herself “famous in a way that was kind of terrifying”

Marcia hated the invasion of her privacy so much she told people Chris Darden got a woody when he saw a topless photo of her posted in the Criminal Courts Building …

“Chris Darden and I were closer than lovers,” wrote Clark in her memoir, Without a Doubt. And also said, “unless you’ve been through what we went through, you can’t possibly know what that means.”

Darden wrote about Clark with equal affection in his own memoir, In Contempt, and even admitted that a relationship with her had crossed his mind.

  5. Coach Sanders has a commitment from a white quarterback from Indiana. The man can coach. Credibility is everything until it’s not evident. Winning is hard, period. Grinch has to get results. USC is about championships. Sanders gets who really wants to win in this league.

      3. At least Joe is getting guns out of the hands of people who shouldn’t have them!

Biden touting the Violence Against Women Act yesterday: “You know but this builds on other steps you’ve taken and we’ve taken, like the most significant gun safety law in 30 years to help keep guns out of the hands of domestic political advisors.”

The White House’s transcript of his comments crossed out “domestic political advisors” and wrote in what he was really supposed to say, “[convicted domestic abusers].”

      1. Success is measured by wins and losses, not by the opinion of who’s on his roster. The guy has yet to win a game in a power 5 conference. Ask me at the end of Dec.

You shouldn’t judge the worth or value of something by its outward appearance alone……just saying!

  7. I guess Scott is forgetting that Riley made everyone who wanted to play earn a golden sticker last year. Really it’s not a problem with numbers if two players wearing the same number aren’t on the field at the same time. Everyone knows that USC doesn’t put names on jerseys. Maybe they should use names instead of numbers. Think about if nobody had a number on their jersey, then they wouldn’t have to worry about having the same number. But then with players with same last name want to be on the field at the same time would the rules apply?
