USC Morning Buzz: What About Malachi Nelson?

We haven’t heard a lot this spring about freshman QB Malachi Nelson.

“He’s learning a lot which will set the stage for him to really go have a great offseason like he’s going to need both physically and mentally to be ready to compete when August gets here,” Lincoln Riley said.

Things really are up in the air at the moment in terms of who starts in 2024. If Dylan Raiola commits, I wouldn’t bet against him. If Raiola goes to Georgia or Nebraska, I’d say it’s wide open between Nelson and Miller Moss to see who starts against LSU.

I know one thing: Riley won’t look as good a coach as he does when Caleb Williams plays QB. That’s why USC is recruiting Raiola so hard.

I don’t say much at the moment about who will back up Williams in 2023 because Moss has been around long enough to be considered the safe choice in an emergency.

  • USC baseball defeated Loyola Marymount, 11-9, on Tuesday night at Dedeaux Field for its 12th victory in the past 15 games.

Adrian Colon-Rosado led the Trojans, going 2-for-5 with a home run and two RBI.

  1. Malachi Nelson is good but so is Miller Moss. At this point I wouldn’t take one over the other concerning 2024. I think Moss will be 2nd string in 2023.

    1. There will be a HUGE drop off IF Caleb doesn’t stay for 2024 and beat LSU all by himself……

I really think that we will be OK in 2024. Carson Palmer won the Heisman in 2002. He took every snap all year long in 2022….every one. In 2003 Leinart won the job and had never been on the field in a real live game. Yet they won the national championship.

  2. Not exactly a ringing endorsement by Wiley of Malachi, rhymes with Liberace,
and his chances to even compete in 2023 because Nelson needs physical and mental improvement but apparently his spiritual side is doing fine

  3. I remember when JT Daniels showed up for fall practice a few weeks before the start of the season. The coaching staff was amazed at how he knew the offense, his primary and secondary receivers, and how to read a defense. So what does Reilly say about Nelson – “He’s learning a lot” and hopefully will be more physically and mentally prepared after the summer break. Not a ringing endorsement. Expect Moss to be the 2023 backup.

    1. I am amazed at the sheer lameness of the [Harvard] lawyers for both sides. The D. A. won’t specify what he’s accusing Trump of [“I don’t have to say it out loud —that’s what everybody’s expecting!”] and Trump’s lawyers let him plead to a nonspecific charge [“He doesn’t need to know the crime — he’ll plead to whatever it is!”]. This is truly a pathetic exercise. No plea should have been entered [as a matter of fact Trump should now be allowed to withdraw his plea until the D. A. picks a crime]…..

Spot on! He can’t possibly be dumb enough to have move forward with this on his own.

It’s sad how people who claim to be American and believe in our most fundamental values are celebrating this. Even the President of El Salvador weighed in:

“Think what you want about former President Trump and the reasons he’s being indicted,” tweeted Bukele. “But just imagine if this happened in any other country, where a government arrested the main opposition candidate. The United States ability to use ‘democracy’ as foreign policy is gone.”

      2. Hey dear buddy, Biden didn’t have his political opponent arrested. Once again, comprehension from you and the dude from El Salvador.

        Nice try!

      3. Once again, you sound confused(cognitive decline). First, you were talking about a comment that was made in reference to Trump’s arrest, then try to attach Biden to it through an FBI raid… Please explain the connection? It’s amazing how hard you try on a daily basis to condemn Biden.

        I truly pity your behavior

      5. Now, now MG, aren’t you splitting a hair off of Donnie Boys ugly pompadour?

I think Trumpy’s legal team knows what the allegation is but would rather not have it referenced in Donnie’s arraignment circus.

MG when was the last time you stood before a judge with the patience to hear anything more than a guilty or not guilty plea during an arraignment.

Trumpy’s legal team has until 8/8/2023 to inundate the court with tons of motions. I think it’s fair to say, w/o a JD degree, that some of the 34 felony allegations will be dropped via Motions and/or negotiation.

Provided of course, Donnie Boy is current on Team Trumpy retainers and fees.

      6. My friend Owns,
The truly great [sincerely] Johnnie L. Cochran Jr. was the last attorney to file a demurrer to a complaint during my time as a prosecutor. It was done in the case of People v. Washington, et al. Before that the ACLU filed a demurrer in my case against Jello Biafra and The Dead Kennedys.

    2. You sound confused again. Please explain the correlation between a civil suit and the attorney fees attached to it versus a criminal indictment that’s focused on Trump’s election fraud… Make it good!

More comprehension issues…..yet I am the dumbass!

  4. USC has got to get rid of Men’s Volleyball Coach Jeff Nygaard who has
accomplish almost nothing in 7 yrs. The team is 1 – 7 in conference
play while ucla is 8 – 0. Also a former ‘Ruin player.

  5. Scooter,

I watched the baseball game last night on live stream. Telling ya, the bats are doing well this season. Producing a lot of runs. Better fielding and being in the right place at the right time is because of coaching. Tomorrow, Friday, and Saturday SC is playing San Diego St. You can live stream all the games if you can’t go. I’m going Saturday.

    1. Thanks for the heads up, PT! I’ve been meaning to try that stream.

If we didn’t already have a vet appointment for Saturday, we would have joined you. Have fun!

  6. Ha! Read the comments. Some dumbass claimed my perception of that awful performance was not reality.

Listen to it and tell me I was wrong. For a local game such as a high school or minor league baseball, OK. But for a nationally televised championship game?! This was just wrong.

    1. Wow!…. Since we both have different opinions you find it necessary to use your typical go-to childish tactic of name-calling…Spoken like a true sociopath.

I feel great empathy for the people in your life.

Let’s meet up…The word “dumbass” would have a greater impact when said to my face. Oh wait, only real men would make a face-to-face comment like that…my bad!

Here’s the funny part, after over 1,100 views only 8 people had a negative comment about it. Plus, the person who posted the video used a phone to record it from a TV screen. I am sure the person recording is a sound engineer(toooo funnnnny!) Our blog member needs to look deep into the mirror before he labels anyone a “dumbass”…I pity the old guy!

  7. Nelson started spring with an arm injury,so it would seem prudent for him to just learn not really practice, mostly just stay in shape.
2024 is a long way off and recruiting is a crap shoot at this point.

    1. I’d like it if a Trojan t-shirt manufacturer offered Caleb $100, 000,000 to stick around for 2024…beat LSU…win the Heisman [for a 3rd time] and clinch the NC under the NEW Defensive Coordinator, Pete Carroll…..

      1. Not sure it’s right to award CW the sole reason for your tooth fairy bozo NC, 2024. Especially since CW cost the bozos a possible trip to the CFP in 2022.

I would rather QB a NC victory with the team, than a H/T for myself.

        Glory Hogs SUCC!

        #and that’s a FACT.

  8. How cute. Desperate to debase USC. No chance of offering UCLA as a counterpoint? It really is comedy to read the CW cost the Trojans the championship when no one predicted they would have a chance. Why worry about 2024? LSU? Love in the moment since the bruins moments will stay free and far between. But there’s always Mick!
