USC Saturday Buzz: A Shrewd Recruiting Decision

Do you think tight end Duce Robinson is worried about playing time at USC?

The current USC roster has Lake McRee, Jude Wolfe and Carson Tabaracci, who was a linebacker last season, as tight ends.

You can see why Robinson shrewdly chose USC. At worst, I could see McRee handling the blocking and Robinson coming in for pass plays. That’s not a bad role. Kind of like a guy who just comes in to rush the passer on defense.

But Robinson will probably get to do more than that with such a thin stable of tight ends. It won’t exactly be “Competition Tuesday” like during the Pete Carroll Era, when the Tuesday practices were often considered harder than games, and you had to be at your best during the scrimmage, or else you might lose your spot.

One very well-known USC player told me he used to try to get out of Tuesday practices because he was worried he would get hurt.

  • There were more than 2,000 fans at Dedeaux Field on Friday night as USC hosted UCLA. Austin Overn went 3 for 4 and had two triples, which gave him a school-record 12 on the season.

But UCLA beat USC, 9-3, and it’s starting to feel like the other shoe is dropping on the Trojans’ season as they lost their fifth-straight Pac-12 game. The crosstown rivals play again at 6 p.m. today and another large crowd is expected. Sunday’s game is a sellout.

Just for comparison’s sake, Texas drew 7,156 against Oklahoma on Friday night and Georgia drew more than 3,100 for its game vs. Arkansas.

  • Here’s another reason this T-shirt is terrible. It says USC plays “Cal Berkeley” on Oct. 28.

Not Cal but Cal Berkeley. More confirmation the person who came up with this shirt has no idea about sports. USC should be embarrassed.

  2. You can’t bring Robinson in on pass plays and McRee on running plays because then they will know when you are going to run and when you are going to pass. Robinson is going to have to learn to block.
    As far as baseball is concerned, this is Sankowicz first year. I’d say that it has been a successful year for USC baseball. Let’s cut him some slack. Rome wasn’t built in a day or in a year.

      1. I actually do think Enfield is a pretty good coach. They usually play good defense and that’s usually the sign of a well coached team. He’s a real good recruiter. The problem is that he’s not as good of a coach as his crosstown rival(Mick Cronin).

  7. I think we have plenty of competition at tight end for Mr. Robinson. McRee is a good blocker and reliable pass catcher. Jude Wolfe was a 4 star prospect out of John Bosco. He is athletic and can block. Would have started but was injured. He may play the H back position with Carson Tabarucci likely backing him up. Don’t know much about Carson but the coaches like his toughness.
