Morning Buzz: USC Defense Loaded For Bear?

Bear Alexander was considered the No. 1 player in the transfer portal. He is going to start at defensive tackle. He is going to make USC better.

So what would be a contrarian view?

Well, he had nine tackles the entire season for Georgia. He didn’t have a sack until the national championship game, when he had two vs. TCU.

And he wasn’t named a starter at Georgia for 2023, which is why he is transferring. That seems to be forgotten by the media. He left because of playing time concerns.

I spoke to an SEC coach I know, who offered this take on Georgia.

“Georgia is good because Kirby Smart is a taskmaster and they get the most out of their players. Their top players are driven to be elite,” the SEC coach said.

Again, for those who can’t remember: Alexander is considered the No. 1 player in the transfer portal. He is going to start at defensive tackle. He is going to make USC better.

But, like with every issue, there can be a contrarian view. I doubt you’ll see one elsewhere.

    3. Maybe he didn’t play much last year because the guy that did start at his position is going to be a first round pick and if he didn’t have the off field non sense he would be a certain top 5 pick.

      Another thing, Georgia actually has three deep across their D line, can you imagine that ?

  16. Wolfee, Alexander played in 12 games for Georgia and had two sacks in the NC game as a freshman. He was recruited as a five star DL. This is a huge get for USC and will pay off big time.

  18. The contrarian view lacks definition. Read what the regular Georgia observers point out and watch what Josh Pate says. This kid spoke to ESPN and explained that the coaches saw him as a pass rush specialist and he disagreed. Much like USC coaches thought Gary Bryant didn’t deserve to start and he disagreed.

    Wolf is starting to post some drivel as if he’s a jilted fanboy. And being as predictable as Chip Kelly, Wolf will now start focusing and posting about diminished snaps for players who stay like Taleni, Solomon or Stanley and Benton.

    Rush: Muhammed or Lucas
    Height or Greene
    Foreman or Byrd
    Shelby or Barquet
    That kid from San Diego who ain’t getting to play this year unless there’s a lot of injuries.

  20. It just shows that SC’s reputation as a football power is coming back and the players are beginning to believe that SC football is heading back to the promise land. After all, you have this outstanding football player who played a lot in his freshman year on a team that has won 2 NC’s in a row and is a sure bet to be a starter on a team that has a great chance to win a 3rd NC in a row and what does he do?……He leaves that team and transfers to SC. That just shows me that SC’s reputation is growing fast.

  22. All of this is meaningless unless the new guys can pick up the scheme and the variations as soon as possible. Grinch talked alot about how players would break the rules of engagement and not follow protocol in terms of responsibility. Now Sullivan and Barrs being seniors shouldn’t have an issue but the freshmen, Alexander and Lucas?

  23. Well, he’s a one gap get to the ball and rally disciple. The problem is that he doesn’t have an Aaron Donald in his scheme. Grinch best defense was at Washington St under Mike Leach who raved about him. Without a two gap monster, your not going to be able to stop double teams with one of the blockers peeling off and taking out a linebacker trying to fill up a gap. Also, when the d-line does a slant, you need a backer to fill the space that opens and tackle the ball carrier. Look at the spring game, how many big runs where a result of missed tackles?

    Now, with more depth and fresher legs, less “rules” should be broken and less hero antics. Forcing teams to throw and getting off the field is the main goal. Having guys who can control gaps and beat double teams will make this defense resemble Georgia. But they must be consistent. Oregon St was a game the defense won but disappeared after that. Why? The scheme and defensive calls were figured out by opponents except Notre Dame.
