USC Saturday Buzz: NFL Draft Question

USC cornerback Mekhi Blackmon was selected with the final pick of the third round by the Minnesota Vikings, so he and Jordan Addison will keep going at it in practices.

Some will ask how the USC defense was so bad with two players selected in the first three rounds?

I look at it another way: Does USC have a corner right now who will get drafted in the third round? No way.

You want to predict five-star Domani Jackson will? He hasn’t even played one entire college game yet. NFL teams don’t draft guys on fanboy optimism. A year from now maybe it’s a different story with Jackson but he’s a question mark today for USC, let alone the NFL.

Who else?

I’ve previously said Arizona-transfer Christian Rolland-Wallace is a nice pickup but he doesn’t have the speed, confidence or quickness of Blackmon, who sought out the opposing teams’ top receivers. Blackmon is going to be a huge miss.

      1. If he’s got you beat for a TD, I say grab his facemask, his long hair, horse collar….whatever….15 yards is much better than 7 points.

      2. Totally —it’s a no brainer. [When Floyd Mayweather fought Shane Mosely he got rocked a few times & the announcer kept saying “Floyd’s holding again!” —sure, when you get hurt you should hold — it takes the other guy off offense]….

    1. But Trejon Fegans runs a 4.7 forty, not Blackmon’s 4.47. Prophet Brown has run a 10.9 one hundred meters, not Domani Jackson’s 10.25. Fabian Ross has no 40 time listed. So, don’t look for man coverage but zone coverages.

      1. He was listed as a 4 star. Also, there’s got to be a reason why Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, Penn State, Ole Miss, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Miss State, LSU, Kentucky, Florida State, Florida, Auburn, Arkansas, South Carolina and Miami all offered him. Also, though he red-shirted his first year, he still experience at the college level and still has 4 years if he wants to stay and he’s not straight out of high school.

  1. A bit grumpy senior Wolf (in honor of Cinco del Mayo)?

I think it is great that we had 3 players drafted in first 3 rounds.
Your Domeni comment was mean spirited too.

The draft results are quite a reversal from the Helton days.

Would love to see Travis Dye picked by Rams in 7th round.

    1. Watch Canelo Alvarez fight on Cinco de Mayo [well, the 6th, anyway].
Whoever gets our Travis will get a productive, hard working back outta the Justin Fargas mold.
btw, Scott isn’t being grumpy when he wonders out loud how a defense with so many stars [and potential stars] gave up SO many points in 3 outta 4 of our last games.

      1. With Tuli doubled and Gentry out (or at half-speed), there was zero pass rush. Even the Tulane guy completed some passes with the time he had to throw.

      2. Nothing worse to watch than a D-line that gives a QB a century to throw the ball. Unless it is a D-line that caves in like a cheap tent against the opposition’s rushing attack.

      3. …well, to be fair, the d-line broke through to get CLOSE to the QB multiple times last year —but, just when you were saying “oh, cool a big sack!” —- our guys would let him get away….

  2. Scottie is positive on Blackmon now, after the guy is out the door. He is what Scottie had to say when Blackmon transferred to USC, pasted in below – usual Wolf snarky innuendo and speculation:

“Colorado cornerback Mekhi Blackmon has decided to transfer to USC. He was an honorable mention All-Pac-12 selection.

Now here is a back story that only interests coaches: Colorado secondary coach Demetrice Martin was hired by Oregon and quickly got his top Buffaloes corner, Christian Gonzalez, to join him with the Ducks.

So why didn’t Martin try to get Blackmon?

Blackmon chose USC over Cal and Utah. So why wasn’t Oregon interested? Again, it’s something that coaches in the Pac-12 talk about.”

    2. This post is among Wolf’s worst. The secondary is looking quite good, although I think maybe we need a nickleback. Jacobe Covington and Domani and Christian Roland Wallace will do a fine job at CB. I am curious to see how Zion does when he is 100%.

A defense is only as strong as its weakest component and USC had horrible linebacker play after Gentry got injured, horrible nickelback play and overall poor d-line play. You cant expect a handful of star players to make up for horrible play elsewhere. And maybe the scheme is also a problem.

I do think that I would prefer to have Colorado’s secondary coach, but that doesnt mean Donte Williams is horrible, just not as good as Demetrice.

      1. Does Scott recall his own posts? Here is a post that contradicts what he is now saying.

        From Dec. 19 –

“I spoke to an NFL scout today about new USC cornerback Christian Roland–Wallace. The scout has spent time evaluating him because there was a chance he would go to the NFL draft.

“His speed is an issue,” the scout said. “All the scouts know that. He has no quick twitch. He doesn’t have long-range speed. Everything he does has to be right. He’s a good college corner. He’s better than any corner USC has. It’s not even close.”

Your words Wolf. So how is he now much worse than Mekhi?

      2. …well, let’s look at the bright side — it should be easy to fix horrible linebacking, poor d-line play and overall bad schemes, right?….

      3. Actually MG, you can easily fix a horrible defense. It’s called get new players from the transfer portal. If that doesn’t work, get more new players and a new coach.

Now, go watch the ABC clip on YouTube wherein one of their braindead anchors sez they censored their own interview with Robert Kennedy Jr. due to his criticizing the wonderfulness of Covid vaccines and America’s Medical Establishment…..

    1. The greatest threat to Democracy is a media that is in collusion with a political party, big business and big government. That is the definition of Biden.

      – a puppet of China
      – a puppet of Wall Street/Big tech/Democratic billionaires
      – a proponent of agency capture for the FDA, NIH, EPA, Pentagon, SEC, CIA, FBI etc.

I am actually supportive of the anti-Biden Democrat, RFK JR. The version of the Democratic party that is actually NOT just a version of fascism.

Some of us Republicans actually believe in strong government regulations and enforcement of existing laws. But not with the current fraudulent agencies.

  5. No other professional sport does as much to equalize the competitive balance as the NFL. That said, some teams reliably suck season after season, decade after decade. Why?? Well, some teams draft extremely poorly and that looks amazingly stupid considering that the draft combines measure and evaluate prospects far more thoroughly than any other sport. Do you think the NBA has this advantage when drafting a kid who is one year out of high school? Or do you think Major League Baseball has the ability to have every team attend “pro days” across the country? Nope They don’t. Which means that if an NFL team does not improve with their draft picks, then they completely fail as an organization. It’s amazing how many teams pass up terrific players and draft some clowns
