When USC spent $70 million to build the McKay Center a decade ago, it was considered a state-of-the-art facility that would put football on equal terms with the best programs in the nation.
Well, it’s not good enough for Lincoln Riley. He wants a facility he doesn’t have to share with other sports and, perhaps amazingly, USC wants to give it him.
There are already blueprints for multiple versions of a new football-only building that would give Riley the new structure he desires.
“Mike Bohn committed to giving (Riley) his own building,” said a USC administrator who did wish to be identified. “It’s already been mapped out.”
Where will it go?
One scenario involves pushing Dedeaux Field closer to Vermont Ave. and having the football building near where the current entrance to the baseball stadium is located. That would place it adjacent to the football practice fields. But there are multiple blueprints right now so the site is not finalized.
USC already has plans to build a new version of Dedeaux Field in 2027 because it will be used for swimming at the 2028 Olympics. But how thrilled will baseball be with moving to help football?
One thing to keep in mind: A new athletic director will now have to shepherd the football project and raise the money. Will he/she do it with the same enthusiasm as Bohn, who hired Riley?
Does football really need this? One issue I’ve heard is Riley wants a football-only weightroom. Currently, the basketball and volleyball teams use the Galen Center weightroom and track has its own weightroom, so I don’t know that there is actually a crunch at the McKay Center. But most football coaches usually don’t like to share things.
Below, is a map that shows the land beyond Dedeaux Field toward Vermont Ave., where there are tennis courts and the Facilities Planning and Management offices are located. Facilities is already being moved off campus.

Did Carol Folt’s blue ribbon Athletic Director Search Committee ever ask why the University of Colorado demanded Mike Folt resign in 2013?

USC shouldn’t give ‘Ol Mule Shoe anything more than what his contract specifies.
‘Ol Mule Shoe refuses to acknowledge that his defensive coordinator is a know nothing clown who’s defenses get torched against quality opponents, especially in bowl games. He has another idiot who is actually a recruiter that’s pretending to be a DB/CB/Secondary coach, he’s also as clueless as they come and yet ‘Ol Mule Shoe couldn’t care less that neither of them know what they’re doing. Years and years of coaching and neither one of those clowns has ever been known for developing players and yet ‘Ol Mule Shoe keeps them around.

Just hope the new baseball stadium has a deeper CF and as long as they take Mark McGwire’s name off any new build – all in. Watching him deflect any questions in 2005, because he deferred to a ‘suit’ per his roid use after he’d finished his playing days in 2001, was telling and then when he was hired by the STL as ‘hitting coach’ in 2010 then he admitted it but still insisted, per a Bobbie Costas’ softball interview, he would have w.o. using them.

Pete Carroll knew that the Ting brothers were supplying his players with PED’s, how about those Trojans, are you going to classify them same as McGwire?
Hell, 80% of MLB players were on PED’s during that era.

How dare you defame the Ting brothers. They were outstanding students but had no business being on the football field.

FOLT lost all her “credibility’ when she continued to preach integrity while allowing helton to screw over the football team by not developing them to fulfill their dreams. The drafts prove this. You cannot preach integrity and practice corruption unless you are a politician.

No, USC should move forward because they will want it for the next coaching staff if Riley leaves. Football is the program that funds everything else, you dont bitch about the cost of it when it brings in all the revenue.

Speaking of “Riley leaving”…. In recent memory, only PC has had any longevity as a college coach leaving for the NFL. Part of that may be related to him having prior experience as an NFL head coach. Being a college offensive guru doesn’t mean success in the NFL. A recent example is Cliff Kingsbury. The NFL is a totally different animal with parity across the board.

The guy could move the ball in the NFL, his shortcoming was figuring out a way to score one more point than his opponent. The obvious solution was to play better defense.

Why would USC need a softball field?…..please explain
Spaulding Field consists of two less-than-stellar 80-yard football fields, and the Rose Bowl is a hard sell to high school athletes at a 30-plus-minute drive from campus. Something in that equation had to change for the football program to be on a level playing field with schools like Oregon and USC.
Ouch!!!!!!…. Read that again: “two less-than-stellar 80-yard football fields”. It’s another fantastic dig at the poor planning that takes place at the Morgan Center.

Reilly wants an exclusive facility for football. Fine just ban all other sports from the McKay center. The other sports that don’t generate any revenue for the university can move into the old Daily Trojan offices for a meeting space and share the weight room at the Galen center with the basketball team.
The desire to perpetually erect buildings on the campus to placate egos is one of the reasons tuition is so ridiculously high.

What is up with the worry that Wiley will bolt?– As pointed out, many highly successful college coaches bombed as NFL coaches. Wiles won’t get much more
money than the alleged $10-mil per year SC is paying him, he lives in one of
the prime areas of the world, and now he is clamoring for a secluded facility for his team.
Doesn’t sound like he is preparing to hit the road, but just in case SC should keep their eye out if Wiles suddenly starts wearing Rams gear or is caught wearing a cowboy hat

Aw, hurt ya feelings so you try to go with the racial trope. I don’t think counting who won trophies or NCAA titles before instant replay was used makes for an interesting repartee so I’ll conclude with this thought: is there anyone at UCLA that could start at USC next year at any position? In either basketball or football? Men’s or women? Kinda amazing how much better USC is over UCLA in the two main sports in just a year! Bronny won’t even start next year! You think he wouldn’t start for Mick? Pretty soon you could add baseball to that question!

“State of the art softball field” is such a UCLA politically correct thing to say. Give of that state to the Chip so the team can practice like they run a state of the art program and not the second most important program at the school, a “chip” off the old cheatin Wooden.
