When I mentioned yesterday John Robinson got hired by USC president John Hubbard because they always played raquetball at USC, it would have been a perfect time to say, “that wouldn’t happen today.”
But remember back in 2017, Arizona State athletic director Ray Anderson hired Herm Edwards as the Sun Devils coach. Anderson was Edwards’ agent when Edwards coached in the NFL.
Edwards had not coached college football since 1989. He had been out of coaching since 2008.
One other footnote on Robinson getting hired: There was also a feeling among the football staff that Hubbard wanted a clean break with John McKay and did not want to hire any of his assistants. Robinson was with the Raiders but had spent three years with McKay at USC. Still, he wasn’t seen as a McKay guy by Hubbard.
It was all so much easier in 1951.
A former USC athletic dept. employee relayed this story about Jess Hill being hired as a football coach.
“When they promoted Hill, the athletic board had not considered him. Someone finally said, `How about (USC track coach) Jess Hill?’ Another said: `Why I never thought of him.’ ”
Before Hill got the job, USC tried to go big and hire Bear Bryant. After USC fired Jeff Cravath in 1950, athletic director Willis O. Hunter contacted Bryant (who was at Kentucky) but he turned the Trojans down.
“I had just signed a new contract at Kentucky,” Bryant told the Daily Trojan.
Kentucky had just gone 11-1 and defeated No. 1-ranked Oklahoma in the Sugar Bowl.
Bryant became good friends with John McKay and in 1969, Bryant was offered the Miami Dolphins job. He wanted to take it but Alabama told him to get someone “as good as you” to replace him.
Bryant offered the job to McKay the next day at the Senior Bowl. McKay said he wasn’t interested, which caused Bryant to change his mind and remain at Alabama.
Here is the best McKay-Bryant story I’ve heard. And here is my second favorite. Both involved alcohol, of course.

Day 5- Full Gear and contact allowed
In my day at SC we went at it in shoulder pads starting in Day-1
